Do people exaggerate FPS? Or am I missing something?Follow

My comp is as follows:

P4 1.6 Ghz
1 GIG RAM
Radeon 9600XT 128

I get 30-40 FPS.

My Bro's comp is a P4 2.8 Ghz w/ same vid card

He gets 40-45 FPS.

I also play on my iBook (definitely not a gaming machine)

1 Ghz G4
768 megs RAM
Radeon 9200 Mobile 32 meg.

I get 10-15 FPS (and it's still very playable).

Now .. people like to boast in /1 that they have a steady 70 or 80 FPS. They laugh at others and boast about their setups, which are not leaps and bounds ahead of mine (like a 9800 XT instead of 9600 and a 3.2 GHz instead of 2.8).

Am I missing something? Or are these people full of ****?

Nah, they're full of it. In a FPS (First Person Shooter), you'll definatly miss the frames you're not getting. I turned on the Frame rate the other day and I was running a steady 21. That number is very low yet everything was as smooth as a freshly sharpened knife.

I find this odd. Usually in "/1" they like to boast about their l337 ping rate and latency.

I can understand how some people "could" get about 60 fps if they have a top of the line video card and cpu, when there isn't heavy foilage and alot of people around, but 70-80 is kinda pushing it.

I am sure they are just lieing. i got about 25-35 fps with a Radeon 9600+2400+, but i got my resolution set at 1600-1200

Oh, and i turned off General Chat when someone said they got 100 fps. only channel i use is mainly the Trade channel, and i am debating if i should turn that off, with all the spam of "WTS blah blah" over and over

The thing is, the average human being sees, in equivalent terms, at about 24 FPS. Because of this, video designers made TV and movies to operate at 30. It's very rare there's a person who notices when nothing goes wrong.

While it might not help your cat if they're watching, for a human being, 30 DPS should be plenty.

2.8 Hyperthread P4
512 RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

Steady 50-60 FPS in most areas.

Lowest ive seen drop to 20-30 for a bit when in the starting locations and heavily congested areas.

Wrong.

System Specs:
AMD64 3000+ @ 2100mhz
1024MB DDR400 RAM
Radeon 9800 AiW Pro 128MB

I get 30-50fps usually outdoors at 1280x960@85hz resolution, everything cranked up (Aniso at 4x) and Bloom effect turned off. When I enter dungeons, it skyrockets to 70-90. Yeah, I have V-sync turned off, so sue me. :P

Well if you want proof I can run around in WoW for a bit with FRAPS recording a video with the FPS toggle on. I'm not sure if any of you would actually care, but I'm willing to do it to point out that it is in fact, possible to get 60+ fps in WoW at 1280x960 on my rig.

Intel P4
512 RAM
ATI Radeon 6800 (64mb)

I'm damn happy with my 10-15 fps, thank you very much...

It plays surprisingly well at that speed...especially when you're used to 8 fps~ on FFXI. X.x
