Hi, I'm new to this, lv 12 Hunter. I just figured out how to get a pet, but it seems upset all the time. I fed it but it didnt work. They always runs away after I'm done with levling. I used call pet and its not there no more. How do i keep it happy so it will stay with me?

It shouldn't take that much food to start off with. Make sure you DO have food though, and it is a type your pet will like.

When you first tame, you'll notice a little red square next to the pet's health bar. That's how happy it is. You need to get it above red by feeding it. Feed your pet and don't start a fight the split second after you do, and you should see messages of your pet's happiness going up (in the combat text window.) Once the box turns yellow, or perhaps even green, your pet will not run away. The pet does slowly become unhappy though, and when you first get the pet, this happens not-so-slowly. Make sure you feed your pet any time it gets into the red. DEFINITELY make sure you feed it after reviving it.

I've never had a pet run away.

I like to keep my pets happiness in the green (125% attack bonus). I love my bear because he is not very particular about what he eats (meat, fish, cheese, fruit, fungus) so I don't have to go out searching for a specific food.

I have had ALOT of bear meat drop off the bears in Darkshore lately so I have an abundance of it. I tend to just feed him that since it has no immediate use to me(no hp or mana regen) in its current form.

Feeding Bear meat to Bears?? Does this make me a bad person??

LMAO, that's the first thing I thought of. Don't think it makes you bad, just maybe a little twisted. I'm more worried that the bear can get happy eating bear meat.

Eventually it won't have any use to your pet either. Pet happiness is determined by whether or not they'll eat the food, and what the recommended level on it is (or would be in the case of cooked food.) My pet at level 35 only gets a very minimal happiness boost from the old level 5 food I used to tote around for myself, and nothing for random junk drops.

A friend of mine got a bear too, but since I don't use hunter so am wondering how exactly do you feed the bear? My friend said she would drag the meat to the lower box (where the action buttons are) Is that were you drag it to? Or how exactly do you feed the bear?

Nope, I know many a bear that love bear meat. That, however, is a much "deeper" and more perverse topic ^^

As mentioned above, as your pet levels, so must the level of your food or it will take ungodly amounts of chow to affect its level of happiness. I too almost alwasy keep my pet in the green for the bonus, so as I level I need to throw out the old food and get new. The trick to know if you are feeding it Primo food is go to the combat channal tab before you drop the food on him. The optimal happiness level for your pet is 35 happiness points per tic when feeding. If you are only getting 7 points per tic, you need to upgrade your food immediatly. To do so just kill higher level mobs for it, the higher the mob the higher the resulting meat will be (if you have a meat eater) currently I have a cat (meat and fish). Crabs are the best source of food I have found at low 20s. They drop meat very often (for fish eating pets only).
Also, if you are brand new and just got your pet and can not feed it, go back to your trainer and ensure you have the Feed Pet skill. If you do not, you need to train it or you will be on a neverending cycle of chasing down new pets. Hope this helps, good hunting.
