How do beginners get to use a different weapon?Follow

Starting out as a Paladin, they give you a mace, but I don't want to use a mace. I'd rather use a sword and a shield, but it won't let me equip swords. The game doesn't do a good job at all of explaining what you have to do in order to go from equiping a mace to a sword. What do you have to do?

Look at your skills list under your character info. It lists what weapons skills you have. If you don't have swords then you have to find the weapon master and pay him 10 silver to learn it. All classes have certain weapons they can use, but haven't learned how to use yet. I believe human warriors start with swords which is why Paladins probably don't.

In my skills list, it says both mace and swords proficiency. Yet it won't let me equip any swords to get experience with them.

Sword trainer is in Stormwind.

Don't worry about being lost for your first few levels. You will learn your way around pretty quickly, and you'll know where to look when you need things. I was so lost when I started playing a few days ago, but yesterday I finally made my way to Stormwind so that I could train in two-handed sword.

With a little bit of time, you'll find everything you want. Dont' worry.

Maybe two-handed swords? Or possible the weapon is above the level you are.

Thanks for the replies.

The skill says just "sword proficiency" and the swords are within my levels to equip, it just won't let me equip them.

rjhtamu, you are confusing racial traits with skills. The "proficiency" you are seeing means that as a Human, you get a bonus to using swords.

To see your actual skills, don't click on "Spellbook&Abilities", instead, click on "Character Info", then click the "Skills" tab at the bottom of the paper doll window that pops up. This will list all of your skills and at what level you are at with them.

You can't use swords because you have not yet trained in them. Go to Stormwind and ask a guard for directions to the Weapon Master, then follow the arrow/flag on your minimap.

Also, remember that you are playing a beta, what's not explained in-game will likely be talked about in the instruction manual and/or tutorial that you will be able to use when the game is live =)

I'm not 100% positive because I haven't done it myself yet. But I believe you can take a tram service from Ironforge to Stormwind. I don't know if this requries a fee or not. If you talk to a guard in Ironforge you can get directions to the tram.
