I was always amazed at how many people seemed to be complaining about WoW on the blizz forums, 9/10 posts were negative. After playing in the stress test 2 I've realized the reason for tlhis.... the people who are having fun (the majority) are too addicted and having too much fun to get off and go post something on the forums.

LoL,

Most of the people on the Blizzard forums are long-time beta players. They are soured to the game because they just couldn't accept the fact that they were playing a work in progress. I've followed the forum for the last few months, and I was always very annoyed. They were the few lucky ones who got to play BETA, and they whined and complained about game imbalance and bugs.

And no, I don't mean they contructively criticized, I mean they WHINED.

In my honest opinion, the great thing about being a part of a beta is getting to help the developer's shape the game.

For the most part though, this WoW Allakhazam forum seems to have a far more positive attitude, and so this is going to be my forum. (Of course I love Allakhazam so I'm biased).

MrHaga, you are right on! I'm pretty sure that's a major component of it. Also, the people who post positively tend to get criticized heavily for being "Blizzard fanbois", which is an incorrect spelling of a pseudo-word. Like pwned, I hate seeing that. Owned is almost acceptable, but pwned (to me) screams "IDIOT!"

Also, some classes were far more powerful once than they are now, and complain because they resent the changes since then.
Exhibit A: MAGE. The patch after mages got talents was horrifically imbalanced in favor of mages. They were dominating everyone, and the mage population exploded as people tried to get in while the getting was good. (Side note: They defended their overpowered class by saying such things as, "Don't make us weaker, make everyone else stronger!" and "Don't ruin the ONLY fun class in the game!") Mages have been heavily nerfed since then to bring them better in line with everyone else. Result? There's still a large number of mages, but many are bitter over losing access to god-mode.

And so it goes. Many classes had times where it was overpowered or had things only it could do. When these are changed for balance purposes, people complain bitterly and harbor that resentment with them over time.

When I played in the first stress test, I could not believe the level of whiners. They whined about everything. I was having a great time playing it...bugs and glitches were few and the work in progress part of it only made it that much more cool. For me, the best part of playing an MMORPG is knowing there is still a ton of stuff I have not done/seen/used. So knowing things were going to be added meant I was not burning the fun out of the game in beta.

Then I thought about my EQ experience. I played that game for 5 years and from day one peopl griped. About everything. They griped that something needed fixed...when it was an entirely new group would gripe because they had fixed it. Then a group would gripe about the gripers. SOE (or Verrant...depending on how long ago) would balance a class and whine-fests would begin. Peopl playing the game...now keep in mind, they paid $49 for the game, $29 for each expansion (which they would get, every time one came out) and $12 a month...and the griped about it as if they were having the most miserable game experience possible. They would pay all of that money and play hours upon hours, and if you did not know better you would think that EQ sucked and offered not one fun moment of gaming time.

So, I consider whining to be part of MMORPGs. I think that because it is such an interactive experience...because people do expect to play the game longer than the 30 to 60 days a non-online game may engross someone...that opens them up to being criticized, about everthing. I think that these people that whine and gripe do not know how else to play it. But I never let someone elses whining or game experience influence my decision to try a game or how I feel about it...and I think most people can say the same thing...we've learned to ignore the whine.
