My First Impression of WoWFollow

Been hanging around here for awhile, waiting for a chance to try out WoW to see if it's the game for me.

Was finally able to get into it tonight (cut Fileplanet some slack, it's hard for any company/servers/people to process as many requests as they got all at once).

Opening Movie:
Wow. That was simply stunning. I'd heard Blizzard did great cinematic sequances (this was the first I'd seen). Wow, just wow. Beautiful.

Character Creation:
Very nice. Reminds me of City of Heroes. Seems to be alot of choices, so won't see alot of the same looking characters running around. Which was a huge problem in FFXI.

Upon Entering Game:
Controls are VERY easy to get the hang of. The Tutorial that pops up every time you do something new (flashing question mark in the bottom of the screen) is a very nice touch. Makes figuring out how to do things alot easier (which wasn't really needed because the controls of simple to begin with).

First Quest:
(I started off as a Night Elf Hunter)
Simple quest, kill some critters. There was alot of people doing the same thing I was, but that's to be expected, so no complaints. I wasn't in any hurry to complete it. I like having a reason to go around slaughtering wandering creatures, instead of the normal "find a weak creature and beat on it until you can go find another creature to beat on". Now I have reasons to kill that Thistleboar that wanders by me.

Just by wandering around I got another 3-4 quests. Completed 4 quests.

I like being able to pick the rewards, nice touch.

Leveling:
So far (got to level 5) haven't seen anything that's different about leveling speed then anywhere else. Seems pretty decent to me.

Graphics:
Very nice. Landscape is great. Colors are great. Characters didn't look that "cartoony" to me. Creatures looks great.

Combat:
I like it. Nice and simple, but with some complexity in using different skills. I LOVE MY FIRST STING!!!!

Movement:
Took some getting used to. Having to hold down both mouse buttons took the most getting used to. Camera wandered alot on me at first. But didn't take that long to get used to it. Starting to develop a combination keyboard/mouse movement, that seems to be working.

Complaints:
Just one. Not enough inventory space. Kept running back to starting area to sell stuff ALOT. Couldn't find anyone selling bigger bags in my starting area.

All in all, after playing about 2.5 hours tonight, I give it a 5 out of 5.

As for bags, Seoman, are they dropping at all from monsters? I remember mobs dropping bags a lot last time I played. Anyways, glad you are enjoying it. Have fun in Darnassus!

I made it to darnassus for some questing today and thats a mighty big city. I'm gonna finish all my other quests before trying to get into those one.

Got my Rouge to 8, did 2 quests and got like 1400 exp and about 3 silver. O.o questing is much more fun and rewarding than it was in FFXI, at least for me.

I'm with seoman although >< I turned off the flashing ? on accident ><

Well let me say this, I really like that that's how it turned out for you. I can't wait to play in two weeks (if EB is right on the 15th being release).

Probably gonna play a Undead Rogue, and I do like the fact you can choose rewards sounds really nice. As to FFXI's where the NPC looks at you and says "What are you still doing here, I said you were done".

I have a question to ask being that the WoW site is pretty much down, and the guides here don't have the info I want.

How exactly in detail do the Trade Skills work. I thought I had remembered hearing/reading somewher that you get to choose a Primary and Seconday skill. What I am wondering is, is how true is that? Also if you choose 1 set of skills does that bar you fom choosing any others?

Cause it kind of bugs me that in FFXI everyone get can ALL the trade skills to 60 (save for fishing which everyone can get to 100), and then choose 1 skill to take to 100. Then at any time they want they can knock that skill back down to 60 and level a different skill to 100. Kinda made me feel useless when I started cooking, that and it pissed me off that every so often I would fail 24 synths after making 12 without fail.

There are no failures in crafting. The thing is, you have a limit on what tradeskills you can learn (2 primaries, I think 2 secondaries. Not sure on secondaries so someone correct me if I'm wrong) Another thing is you will always level your crafting as long as you are doing hard recipes.

The difficulty is color coated with grey being the easiest and orange being the toughest. By toughest I mean the time and patience to gather all the materials. Once you hit a certain level cap, you must go to the crafting trainer and pay to further the skill to a higher cap.

You also cannot craft certain things until you learn it through recipes. Recipes can be found 3 ways: As drops, from buying them or quests.

Just wanted to add that you can unlearn tradeskills and learn something else. Just remember if you go back to your previous skill, you'll have to start from scratch again.

Redmoon I thought Bliz said they were going to remove the ability of switching trade skills a patch or two ago. I thought they were just doing that so they Beta players could try out the different professions and test them and the likes. Not sure if my info (rather if I read it right) is correct, anyone else read this?

Red,

Haven't seen any bags drop yet. Hopefully they do, I need more space.

Now if I can just find a tradeskill trainer...

Head to Darnassus which is to the west I believe. There is an entire section in Darnassus for crafting alone.

Overcooked- Haven't heard of that. I'll go and check previous patch notes to see any mention of it.

Gotta go to Dolenar first. Need to drop off a package.

That's after I trim the spider population in Shadowglen Cave.

lol Thanks, almost forgot Doleenar's name. If anything, the road to Darnassus is by the female Night Elf on a tiger in Doleenar. It'll lead ya west. By the way, you'll be doing one of my favorite quests in Doleenar which involves a den. Bring a full party for that one. Funny how many times my party died there...

That den is HUGE! DIdn't know it was going to go that deep when I started 8)

Great great fun.

My NE is a 11 druid now and still no bag drops :(

Tradeskills:
You can have 2 professions. These include herbalism, alchemy, engineering, blacksmith, mining, sknning, tailoring, leathercrafting, enchanting. You learn them from NPC's that train them.

Minor skills include first aid & cooking (wasn't there 2 more hmmm). Anyone can learn these and they don't count towards your limit.

Edit: Hey look! Blizz made a new guide for professions today!

During the first Stress Test, bags dropped like crazy. I often ended up selling a lot of bags because I already had the max amount. Of course, I was a rogue and maybe drop rate changed a little when you are a rogue? Anyways, I sure hope there are bags because I also agree with Seoman that space is very limited.

Dropped bags are gotten with luck. They don't always drop. Tailors can make 6 slot bags at level 45 so if you go to the auction house you can probably get one cheaper then buying it in from a computer vendor.

ill tell you this now incase u are unaware. Hunters get the WORST bag storage in the game EVER, thats y u have to go back so often. 4 bag slots, 1 for quiver one for food/ammo, other for wuest items and last for sellable items. I never had a problem, but apparently it gets to be one later on

I did my Fileplanet registration and got my Beta key last night ( thanks to a friend at Game Spy/ Ign. I played for about 3 hour last night. I've been playing FFXI for like 6=8 hours a day for a damn year. I didn't think I would like this game for a while

I INSTANTLY FELL IN LOVE!!! I logged onto FFXI and told my LS's I'd be away for a while. I will now play this game through the end of Beta and I will buy it I'm sure. I'm having so much fun playing with my friends and the game is so well made so far that I can't wait to get home and play. I'm a Dwarven Paladin btw.

Oh and the opening scene was amazing. all I can say is ....well..WoW.

Yep... I'm in your boat. 73 days logged on FFXI. I'm going to play this through to the end of Beta... I've only played for 3 hours so far (damn work, over in 45 minutes, finally!), but if the beginning is any indicator, I'm gonna be buying the retail and hanging up my pimp hat... Kinda sad really.

Well, I guess I'll give my first impression of Wow. First, a little background. I'm a pretty causual gamer, but not new to MMORPGs. I've played EQ1, FFXI and City of Heroes. I have about 30 days logged on FFXI and I've been playing for a year.

I've been pretty eager to try WoW because it is supposed to be causual player friendly. (CoH was too...but it was very boring.) So, I got my stress test key after being frustrated by FilePlanet and downloaded the game yesterday.

When I first started the game I thought the graphics looked ok. I created my character: Troll Shaman and entered. The first movie scene was great. When I got to my starting location I played with the controls and looked around and the colors were vibrant and the detail was much better than it looks from the screenshots. I then went into the video settings and increased the res to 1280 x 1024 and upped most of the settings to max. Now I'm impressed. The graphics were much more impressive than any of screenshots let on.

I kept playing around with the controls -- switching between asdw , the cursor keys and the mouse for movement. I then got my first quest and started killing some pigs. Ding! Level 2. I was also impressed by the number of mobs in the newbie area. There were plenty for all to kill. I explored a lot and found the armor and weapon seller and sold off some of my booty to buy my next spells from the Shaman trainer. It was pretty easy to learn considering I knew nothing. I completed several quests and ventured out to several new areas and managed to get to level 7. Here's my opinion so far:

Battle:
Spell casting and attacks look cool and are fun.
The spell interruption and auto recast is cool.
I wish there was battle music.
As a caster I have several things to do, but I'm curious if there is anything like a Skill Chain/Magic Burst from FFXI or the heroic opportunities in EQ2.

Movement:
I still haven't found my preferred method, but I did find myself missing using the PS2 controller -- nothing is better than 2 analog control sticks.

Quests:
It was nice to be able to level and quest at the same time, but the newbie quests also weren't very exciting.

Equipment:
I couldn't find the auction house and I have no idea how to fill all the equipment slots, but it was great to get drops and quest rewards that were immediately useful.

Grouping:
I didn't get to group at all yet. I hope to get to do that soon. Having to wait for an hour for a group is no fun, but neither is playing only by yourself. I'm really looking forward to joining a guild and getting some in game friends.

Overall I think the game was fun. Maybe I had my hopes set too high, but I also think the game wasn't perfect. I'm looking forward to playing more and I really hope they add battle music :)
