The word "instance" itself refers to a dungeon where only one person or group can enter at a time. Of course, there're multiple copies of the same dungeon, but you can only enter one copy, and you'll have to wait awhile until you can go back into a different one. The "instance" idea practically eliminates botting and such. Here's an example, based on my understanding:

Eight people come up to the entrance of an instanced dungeon. Player 1 and 2 (who are partnered up) enter and end up in Copy A. Player 3 tries to go in, too, but he is placed in Copy B, as he isn't in the same group as the first two. Then, Players 4-7 enter as a group, securing Copy C all for themselves. Being all alone, Player 3 invites Player 8 into his copy of the dungeon.

Most of these instances have a few quests or one main quest associated with them. To get the quests usually you have to do some minor quests in certain places. It's kinda like Everquest LDON, but you don't have to get it from NPC. Basically you can walk right into the area. The only differnce is you are alone and all the monters are elite. This means they are much tuffer then a normal mob of the same level.

You don't have too wait a while to go into a new instance. You just disband your group and reform it and it creats a new instance for you.

I'm gonna give it to you into D&D terms cause I love putting it into D&D terms.

Let's say you and your party are on a quest to retrieve a Rare Sword for the Prince of some Kingdom. Let's also say your told it is in the Cave of Death under the watchful eye of a Demon. Ok story set....

You and your party arrive at the Cave of Death after a long journey and proceed to venture inside. You all fight what few monsters you find along the way, but find it odd to find so few. After getting some ways in to this Cave of Death you happen upon 20 parties walking around killing every last thing in sight. You realize what you killed was what had just been able to respawn.

You and your party having nothing to fight go into what appears to be the Demon's room of the cave. Upon entering you see a party killing said Demon and see 3 parties waiting in line for their turn at killing him.

In my opinion stuff like that removes ALL the adventure and fun, and turns it into a whopping adventure of suck ***.

Well what several MMORPG's have done to rectify this is make what is called an "Instance". When you and your party arrive at the Cave of Death and enter, an "Instance" of the Cave of Death is created solely for you and your party. If any other parties venture into the Cave of Death they get their own "Instance" of the Cave of Death to venture into.

Makes for all the fun to be returned.

If you played the Guild Wars test at all this weekend you're already pretty familiar with instances.

On the top of the screen in Guild Wars it basically gave you a list of instances, in every town, and every zone you entered. For instance (no pun) you might be in Lion's Arch #44, but someone from your guild is in Lion's Arch #50. You could be standing in the exact same spot according to your computer screen, and not see each other because you're essentially on different programs.

You can still talk to these players, but you'll never be able to see each other unless you choose to be on the same instance. I don't know if that helps at all, but I figured I'd give it a try.
