How much does Race matter?Follow

I've been playing FFXI for the past 7 months and now I decided to come and play WoW (since I just love Blizzard ^^).

The main job I've been eyeing is a Shaman and Rogue. I hear you can have up to 8 characters so I'm sure I'll be able to play all the classes, but my question is how much does your choice of race determine the quality of your professions?

e.g. Mithras will be a somewhat better Thfs than Elvaans (not considering armor and enhancements, just plain old stats)

I hope that the difference wont be too drastic since I didnt like how FFXI stereotyped certain race w/ certain jobs.

Certain races can only play with certain jobs so yes race matters.

For example, gnomes can become mages, rogues and other jobs (some, not all) but cannot become priests simply because of their culture (they do not believe in deities). Taurens can become druids due to their love of nature but cannot be rogues because material things are not important to them as much as earth mother. What you choose as a race will put you closer to what job you want to be.

Here's a rundown on the races/classes:

Human: Warlock, Warrior, Priest, Mage, Paladin, Rogue
Night Elves: Druid, Priest, Rogue, Warrior, Hunter
Gnomes: Warrior, Rogue, Warlock, Mage
Dwarves: Rogue, Warrior, Paladin, Priest, Hunter

Orcs: Hunter, Warlock, Rogue, Warrior, Shaman
Tauren: Druid, Warrior, Shaman, Hunter
Undead: Priest, Mage, Warrior, Rogue, Warlock
Trolls: Hunter, Priest, Shaman, Warrior, Rogue, Mage

As for stat differences, there are some but nothing huge to gimp you depending what your race/job is.

Race means nothing. Ive never been turned down for anything do to my race nor have i ever even considered doing so myself.

this isnt ffxi, so dont worry about it. The two dont even compare to each other.

Race will have SOME effect once all racial attributes are in. I imagine they will have to be added very soon, so more to comment on that. Up until now, though, race has only mattered in that Taurens don't buy mounts and Undead require alternate means to CC them. (Not better or worse, purely different.)

I wonder how much of an impact racial abilities will have.

I want to be a troll shaman. Those masks they wear are bad ***! And I wouldnt mind throwing down few totems here and there. Stoneskin totem and earth shock totems sound helpful to parties and also for soloing.

From what I've read you can reach the maximum level cap pretty fast as compared to FFXI? Are quests what drives this game forward as opposed to leveling your character?

Well attribute wise it means nothing, but as was said racial abilities will make a differnce. Undead are somewhat unique at the moment being the only class that really has them though Taurren have plainsrunning which allows them to run faster. Night Elves will probably have the ability to hide at night. Not sure about the rest.

I could dig to China faster than level a character in FFXI. OK, maybe that's a big extreme, but to say the least, yes there is a difference in leveling rates.

Quests are what level your character. Rather than mindlessly slaying creatures all day long, you can go on a crusade to...collect 8 candles from kobold miners. Ok, well, some quests are a little more epic than that, and it gives you a sense of purpose. You still get exp for killing creatures, but it directs you toward more exploring and variety, and gives you rewards for it, rather than sitting in a corner killing whatever spawns.

I love that! I love playing RPGs and because I SE is awesome at making console RPGs I thought FFXI would be quest driven, but boy was I wrong.

I am really glad to hear that WoW is like that though. I love learning the story line and advancing through the game's plot more than the character build up. Don't get me wrong I love to level my characters and stuff, but I thought FFXI was a little too extreme.

I wanted to do all the Zilart missions and get to Rank10 to see all the cutscenes and find out more about the story, but all I was able to get to was rank6 (but that Norg cutscene was awesome!) and ZM4 (tonberry bcnm is hard!).

I am pleased to hear this though, its getting me interested in Wow even more now.
