Question about stats...Follow

Ok...so I'm trying to plan out a character and I realized that i don't know what all the stat categories do for your character. I'm fairly certain that strength affects your damage output. And agility seems to affect your accuracy and evasion. But what about Stamina? Does stamina equal vitality in FFXI? I guess intelligence controls magic effectiveness but i'm not sure. And what does spirit do?

Also, all races are supposed to be fairly good at the classes that are available to them. So how much do their stats affect them. For example: I noticed the dwarven rogue has high strength but low agility, does this mean that that they'll hit hard...if they ever hit? Does the low agility mean a dwarven rogue will hardly ever be able to land a hit?

I guess I'm just wondering if it's like FFXI where, if you're a Elvaan or Galka you have to spend a lot of money to be able to land a hit or if you're a Mithra you have to spend a lot for strength so you'll actually do damage when you hit.

Just wondering how vast the difference between races are in WoW. Any input will be helpful.

Strength: increases melee damage, increases effectiveness of blocking with a shield
Agility: directly adds to armor, increases Dodge, increases chance to critical hit
Stamina: increases hit points
Intellect: increases mana, increases chance to have a critical effect on spells
Spirit: increases health and mana regeneration. Note that mana starts regenerating five seconds after the last time you cast a spell, and that health only regenerates out of combat.

Note 1: none of these stats affect your hitting/getting hit (aside from Agility adding to Dodge). That calculation uses your Attack rating and Defense rating, which are based solely on level.

Note 2: this information, and a lot of other basic information, is available on worldofwarcraft.com (click on the Basics link on the left console). Some of that information is out of date, however, so be warned. Example: the Basics site maintains that Spirit affects a user's chance to proc a weapon, though that feature was removed one or two patches ago.

In answer to your second question, the difference between the various race's stats are miniscule. This is true even at level one. By the time you get to level twenty, there's pretty much no difference between a Night Elf rogue and a Dwarf rogue. Your stats depend on your level and your equipment; the difference between races are 1-3 points max, which is totally irrelevant once you start picking up good equipment. Really, the only way to affect your stats is equipment. Racial differences are tiny.

Which is not to say that there's no difference between the races. Currently, only two races have racial abilities implemented: Tauren don't get mounts, but instead have an ability called Plainsrunning. Undead are immune to certain bad effects, but the Priest and Paladin classes have special anti-Undead weapons to counter them. Most racial abilities are NYI; however, Blizzard has said repeatedly that when they put them in those abilities will be minor at best, not game-changing in the least. The upshot: you cannot choose a "bad" race/class combination. Every legal combo is totally valid.
