AH question...Follow

#1 Oct 22 2004 at 5:05 AM Rating: Default
I've decided today to skip the general forums and all the whining to read some of the other threads. The first on I'm reading is the tradeskills forum. A common them is people trying to figure out what the current "market value" is for their product. Is there no "Last 10 Sold" or Auction history funcions in WoW? If not, Blizzard could do everyone a favor and get that in a patch sooner rather than later.

Just a thought...

granted i have not played the game but from what i gather the AH isnt anything like FFXI's its mroe of a channel where people say what they either want or are selling. pretty much like the Diablo 2 trading channels just hopefully a bit liess chaotic. As i said i am not positive of anything but that is what i get from reading. If i am wrong someone posting what it really is would be nice

From my experience playing the stress-test the AH really is an auction house, where you bid and can be outbid. This has its highs and lows if someone doesnt have a "buy-it-now" price. You pretty much have to camp the AH to keep from being outbid.

As far as a history, I would usually just see what the vendor would buy it for and bump that up. As for the really good items the vendor wont be the best place to get this info, so I would assume just a few trial and error runs with the price on the AH would be just fine. Im sure there will be some history option at release if not open-beta.

Heres the information I was able to gather from the "Read this before you ask questions" sticky by Azuarc

"There is an Auction House that lets you put items up for bid, or you can just simply try to hawk your wares in the city trade channels. The Auction House is a clean interface that is more desirable for most people than simply trying to find a buyer in chat channels. They are located in Ironforge (Alliance,) Ogrimmar (Horde,) and Gadgetzan. (neutral) The neutral auction house, while it can sell to both factions, is more out of the way and exacts a higher selling fee, so it is not universally used by all."

And some related information, same source

" every town has a mailbox you can visit to send messages to other players and see if anyone has sent you any. Mail costs 30 copper to send (postage), and you may attach one item to the mail. The auction house sends you items and returns bids to you through the mail. It is also possible to transfer items between your own characters through the mail.
"

Hope that helps.

Nich,

Why did you rate me down when all I was doing was ask an AH question?

You also called me Mr. Sour Grapes... yep, I sure the hell am full of sour grapes when Blizzard told us U.S. services members overseas we would be involved in the NA beta testing when in fact we are cannot get in because the beta sign up is being screened by IP addresses.

The end is near. Open Beta will come and go, then retail and I'll be in the game.

By the way, I'd return the same rate down back, but I'll wait and take out on you in a PvP match coming soon to a server near you.

The Auction House interface is actually pretty good. You can set an auction to last 2 hours, 8 hours, or 24 hours(don't recall if there were other settings, but I remember those). You can set a reserve on an item. When bidding on an item you can set your current bid and how high you are willing to go(incase someone bids above you your bid bumps up an increment(up to your set max bid)). You sort items you are looking for based on type and there were a good 15-20 categories.

If you are selling an item you can put a "Buy-out" price (ex. Current bid is 4 gold for "item X" but you can buy it now if you pay 12 gold). Money from bids goes to your mailbox as well as items that didn't sell. Once you set your price, just walk away and check the mailbox when the auction is over to see if it sold, and for how much if it did.

Kerik,

Thanks for the explaination. Just one more question, does the AH provide you with an item history so you can see the last 10-20 times a particular item sold and how much it sold for?

Thanks again, everything that answered got a rate up.

shhh no one PvPs on these boards!

You'll get your hands chopped off for that. Anyways this is chidish to be rating down people for pointing out their opinions. I suggest that people stop being hypocrites and flaming people when they make a whole thread about not flaming people, You know who you are.

Unfortunately, there is actually no option to set a max bid (aka proxy bidding). You may bid either the next highest minimum bid, or you may enter your own bid above the minimum. The AH does not automatically re-bid for you if you are outbid.

At present, there is no way to search on prior sale prices. On low level green items and some less-rare tradeskill items (starting bid <1g), a buyout of 2-3x the AH's auto minimum bid is usually a safe bet. For other items, especially blue, purple, and high-level green items, it's best to set it for a 24hour auction with no buyout & let players bid. The AH automatically sets a starting bid of vendor price + 50%, and generally speaking even if your item doesn't sell, you can vendor the item and still make some money above what you shelled out for the AH deposit.

If you're online and have the AH interface open if you are outbid on an item, or one of your items sells, the money goes directly into your inventory. Which is nice, since this means you don't have to run to the mailbox to get your money before you can re-bid. ;)

There is also currently no neutral AH- gadget is gone, as is booty bay.

Prices fluctuate pretty rapidly from week to week, so a history might not be as much use as you would think. For instance- last week, silk was down (everyone was setting their buyout prices low), so I bought about 12 stacks for 20s apeice. This week, price was up, and I successfully unloaded all of them at 55s buyout prices. I've read others commenting on the trade boards about this phenomenon, so I think it happens with all kinds of things.

Proxy bidding would be a godsend for buyer and seller alike.

While there is no history button, there is often more than one of whatever you want for sale. For examle- as I type this, 10 people are selling stacks of 20 copper ingots. You can get a good concept of what the current value of something is by just looking at what people are charging for it.

One other thing I should probably mention is that when you put an item up for bidding, the game provides you with a suggested reserve price based on what the item would sell for at a vendor. In most cases, I use this. If it is an item that is especially well suited for a class (say a shield that has stamina and strenght bonuses- perfect for a warrior), then I may bring up the cost a bit. I always set the price at something that I think is reasonable, as I would rather have a large quantity of good trades than a few trades where I lucked out and found someone who was willing to pay me too much for whatever. I think I make more money overall doing that, and it is nice knowing that the buyer and the seller are both happy with the deal.

I visited the Gadgetzan AH last night, and it was still quite functional (although there isn't usually much for sale there). Are you sure the Auctioneer hadn't just been killed by a marauding player when you visited, ahunter?

no- I'll have to check again. If you were there last night, then your info is better than mine.
