What do you mean no wipe for release?Follow

#1 Oct 18 2004 at 10:35 PM Rating: Default
I'm posting this here in hopes of someone with influence at Blizzard Ent. might read it.

I'm hearing rumors and reading in the beta forums that some of the beta testers are trying to scam their way into keeping their CB and/or OB characters on retail release.

To me, this would be a very bad idea. Blizzard, if you are listening, I guarantee you that the only ones that are remotely interested in no wipe at retail are the griefers in the game. There is absolute no reason for ANYONE to need to start at anything other than level 0 on day one of release. If Blizzard allows the carry over of CB or OB characters to retail, I will not be buying the game.

You will have millions of happily paying new customers upon retail release and great cash flow for your company. Why worry about making a few griefers happy that will do nothing more than ruin gameplay for new customers. These people crying "foul" about losing there characters they worked hard to build. Correct me if I'm wrong here, it wasn't a race to build characters but a race to find bugs in the game.

Blizzard should be commended for a job well done and I look forward to the weeks ahead when all the millions of WoW fans sitting on the sidelines get their chance to jump in and have some WoW fun.

Let the games begin...

... You actually think the Blizzard staff reads Allakazhams site..?

And, Blizzard will never let CB or OB characters into retail.

Sorry, but your post is extremely irrelevant, no point at all.

Creamed,

I can only hope that someone with influence does. I just think it is a damn shame the abuse that blizzard and the community managers are taking. The reason for posting here is in hope that someone with a beta account will see my main post get the CM on the official forums attention so we can all get a definative answer.

I do appreciate your quick reply.

As of now, and in the Blizzard forums they say no transfer of characters to retail from any beta. Those who are comfortable in their throne are nervous at the prospect of being lowered to the same level. The reason for this is that it sounds like the majority of them are griefers, and their panicked about the revenge they will suffer.

There is no probability of blizzard letting any characters into release from beta. They have been pretty firm on this from what I have seen.

It sounds like they will do a complete server wipe on the day of open beta start so everyone will be level 1. I think this is a very good idea for testing. It allows the dev. team to gage the leveling rate of those who have been in beta for the better part of a year. They say that things have been getting progressivly slower for the lower levels. I wouldnt expect a major retool of the exp thing, but the "rest" system is most likely going to be under heavy scrutiny in the open beta.

This really doesn’t matter to us so just sit back and watch them squirm. For once were not alone in our suffering.

There is NO chance of any beta characters making it to the live retail servers. The best they could possible hope for is to be put on the "test" server and even that is very unlikely.

Yeah, it's pretty much standard practice to do a server wipe before release, and I've only heard of 1 exception (Lineage II). I really wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't forsee Blizz giving in on something that important.

IMO I already have a huge advantage knowing the ins and outs of the game and character wipe has been expected from the beginning.

I don't see why you would listen to rumor when Blizzard has posted definitely to the contrary on this issue.

Remember, kids, RUMOR is not FACT. You can't trust it. Just like you can't trust the RUMOR that the game was going to be out in August, or the RUMOR that there would be servers with no faction restrictions, or the RUMOR that Paladins would actually be useful at release. (Well, ok, that last one could be true, but it's a longshot.)

I don't think they'll be wiping the regular beta server when Open Beta goes live - since open beta will be on completely different servers. My guess is that the closed beta server is where they will continue to do their tweaking even during OB.

However, Blizz reps have already stated several times that everyone will start on equal footing in retail.

Which, in my opinion, is as it should be. Even though I've got 8 characters in the mid to high levels in CB right now I'm looking forward to a fresh start come retail.

Only one game out of all the hundreds of MMORPGs that have come out has let beta toons carry over to release. Only one. And, we know what a collosal FUBAR that game was. Was it really necessary to start this thread?

A side note. I remember AC allowing beta characters into the game, and I know E&B did. Beta characters transferred into release is not a common trend but it is not unheard of either. I would also venture to say that AO allowed every beta character into the game, as its first 4 months after release were its beta test.

Regardless it is a bad idea, especially for games where PvP is possible. I wouldn't worry about it though, the one official word about release is that this will not happen.

Never listen to anything unless it comes straight from Blizzard themselves.

Actually, paladins are going to be getting a LOT of lovin in the next patch. They finally get talents, and other class revamps as well. They've been neglected for so long; I shudder to think at what's going to happen when this patch goes live. (My two main alts are a paladin and a hunter, too, so I have NO idea which I'll want to focus on, since hunters are getting talents then also.)

There will be a wipe prior to retail release as to put all players back on an even playing field.

Blizzard has been moot on whether there is going to be a wipe going from Closed Beta to Open Beta, as they are concerned that if they announced this, that those with high lvl characters would discontinue testing the high end of the game.

The high end of the game is something they really want tested as sooner or later almost ALL players should reach this lvl of play and are expecting a riveting End Game.

I believe blizzards stance on the wipe for OB is that there wont be one. I find it a good thing because they still need a large mass of high levels to test out the new things to do without leveling up and getting wiped before release.

Just hope they can get some stuff implemented that would stop a few of the complaints of things getting boring in the endgame at the moment.

all that i know is that if blizzard doesnt whipe before release a lot of people will be ticked off. Personaly i have no desire to be the first lvl 60 or anything but the game is more fun if started fairly instead of people getting to bring there lvl 60+ chars into the fresh game. i mean its a fast lvling game anyways and they already know they best ways to do it. i would say that anyone that is in closed beta could be lvl 60 in damn near half the time of anyone else anyways. I am sure that they will do a whipe, people can complain about it (and i am sure i would to if i played a game for so long then lost it all) but i dont think its up for debate

Just so everyone is assured, there is no way in hell that blizzard will not wipe servers for closed beta. Theres speculation over open beta wiping servers, but its doubtful seeing as how they still need speedy testing of high end game and to test it under standards which will probably be in place after a few months in retail.
