Thinking of buying WoWFollow

#1 Oct 09 2004 at 11:41 PM Rating: Good
I am thinking of buying Wow. I am currently a FFxi player and will not be giving that up to play WoW, but instead will want WoW for when I don't have a lot of time to spend on FFXI.

Is WoW playable for a just a couple hours at a time?

I am thinking of a druid night elf, is this a good soloable character?

How good is character customization? Abilities and model wise.

Should I sign up for Open-Beta? Will there be a minimum amount of time you must spend on open-beta?

How many characters per account?

Is there a decent amount of mature players? I ask this one cause I don't swear, make sexual innuendos, or act stupid. On Bismarck there seems to be a pretty high maturity lvl of players and enjoy this.

If anyone answers my questions, thank you ahead of time.

1) Yes, WoW is suited for those not able to play 8 hours a day.

2) All classes can solo. The advantage as a soloing druid is thw ability to shapeshift and cure yourself.

3) Every class have (or will have) three "talents". Every level you gain after level 10 will earn you one talent point. You can use these talent points to focus on one or more talents of your choosing.

4) Not much info was given about open beta other then it is coming. Stay tuned for further details is all I can say for now.

5) 8 characters per account.

6) Thats an iffy at best. I would say that there will be mature players but I'm not sure how many as oppose to FFXI. I will say that Battle.net (Blizzard's free gaming service) has some of the most immature gamers around. I won't lie there but since this is a game you must pay to play, expect some of those gamers to be cut down. If anything I'll say the maturity level is the same as any MMO.

I have a feeling you'll soon be quitting FFXI for WoW.

If I was you, and had questions about WoW and if I'd want to play it, I'd sign up for the Open Beta. Nice way to test out the game and see if it's what you want.

Kind of a no-brainer really...

(BTW, I haven't been in any of the betas, but as a former FFXI-er I was interested in the same information you were. WoW is very soloable compared to FFXI).

Nice post, red. Just to clarify one thing, there are three talent SETS - flow charts like the character trees in Diablo 2...sort of.

I'm sure you won't be *required* to spend time on Open Beta if you sign up. What's going to happen if you don't? They terminate your service that you're not using for the remainder of the two weeks they run it?

I thought I'd read that there was going to be 10 characters per account?

Nah, it's 8 now, bro. Not sure why but I'm not really concern. *shrugs* I just want the game out already ;_;

How many characters are allowed per account?
The current limit is a total of 8 characters across all realms. This number is subject to change.

Eh - I play on B.Net, and I consider myself much more mature than half the people on that service. Some people when they win it ends like this "YOU ******* NEWB LOSER!~!!!!!!111", "U SUX!1", "NEWB!1" when I win, it ends in "gg" - (or lose).

But, I do agree b.net is filled with idiots. And, most likely, if they're rich idiots so will WoW. (Let's hope not ;))

bnet is free thus a friggin ton of little kids are on it. WoW will require a monthly subscription and thus a great deal of those children will not be able to play. Plus if they act up I am sure the GM's will weed them out to keep new players from getting frustrated and quitting.

LOL that is so true. Also when I win, I get the whole speech asking how I knew that unit "x" was at location "a" and that I MUST maphack. I've also heard "i f*in screwed up, i wanna remach u stoopid f*in n00b hacker."

Towards the end of my time in starcraft, my friend and I would do a 3 person "free for all"(melee lol) on three kingdoms and ally against the guy that joins, or do 3v1.compstomp and backstab the other guy. I can't even begin to explain the kinds of responses we got, most being about us being...well....a curse word for black people, lol.

But yeah, like the others said, battle.net was free, and anybody could do whatever their little heart desired, even hack. I wouldn't worry about WoW being half as bad as on bnet.

I just started getting into WC3 after owning it for a long time and only playing the single player for a few weeks. Kinda sucks that when I do win its against idiots and when i lose its against "I roxxors the big 1!!!11elevel" guys.

I completely agree with everything aforementioned, above.

I also did the 3v1's - very fun, and some idiots get so pissed they're all "omfg.. u ******.. omfg.. u *****.." then they leave, they act like they're about to suicide or something, it's a game.

But, also, I do agree, if I start playing WoW and all the sudden in general channel I am seeing people like "LOLZ OMFG I KILLED TEH MONSTER WITH 4 SINISTER STRIKES N' LYK.. HE WAS SO EASY LMMMFAO!!!!1111" then, another kid jumps in, "LoLz ThAt Is SoO AwESomMe, Im LyK AttKinG a LiTTlE GReeN FrOg he SuKZ!!! LolZ!!!!", then I will be quite dissapointed, however, I doubt people will be like that - stress test everyone was decently mature.

Thank you all for the responses.

Another question: Can I use a gamepad to play, or is it mouse/keyboard only?
#14 Oct 11 2004 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
Actually it is 8 characters per SERVER per account. You could probably end up making 80 character (8 per server) if you really wanted to for some reason.

To answer the original questions:
1) Yes, you can play WoW for just a few hours at a time. You can log on, do a quest or two, log off and feel good about yourself. Or you can log on, burn through a level or two, join a group to do a dungeon crawl and stay on until 4 a.m. and also feel good about yourself. I did both during the stress test.

2) Blizzard has gone out of its way to make sure every class can solo, and by all accounts they've done a good job. Races don't matter as much to how well you solo, since they hardly matter at all, but the classes are tuned to where you can solo as any class. There are constant debates on the closed Beta forums over who solos best/worst, which just tells me everyone's good at it.

3) Character customization in terms of abilities is through Talent points. You get one per level starting at level ten, and you can use them to enhance existing abilities or get entirely new ones. However, there are about 3 times as many total talents as talent points at the level cap... you can see where the customization comes in.
In terms of character model, there's decidedly less customization. You can change the gender, the facial features, the skin tone, and the hair. The facial features are kind of hard to see, for the most part, and the others are only somewhat noticeable. You can't change the actual build of the character, though, short of changing gender. Most of your character's look will come from his equipment, though even with that you'll sometimes end up looking the same. I remember for the last day or two of stress test ALL of my guild-mates wore the same red hood... it was a nice quest reward and noone had anything better. So you could tell who'd done the quest and who hadn't by the presence/absence of the hood.

4) You should probably sign up for Open Beta if you wish to buy the game. Think of it as a test-drive. They don't hold you to certain required hours or whatever, so don't sweat it.

5) Eight characters per account I BELIEVE. Might be more.

6) The Stress-test had mostly mature people. There were a few idiots spamming the general, but you can squelch them if you don't want to listen. (Yes, there are in-game commands for this.) As for the people I met in my adventures, almost all were civil. Not sure if this will hold, however.
