Unlike FFXI where all jobs are availible for all race, WoW only leaves certain classes for certain jobs. Because of this, all races can do all jobs availible with no problem. Only difference between races will be racial stats and traits. Aside that, being a gnome mage will be almost similar to being a troll mage. Only difference is that a troll mage will have higher hp then a gnome and will have the racial trait "troll regeneration" once racial traits are implemented (and if the trait actaully makes it. just picked the trait they had in WC3) A gnome will most likely have higher intelligence then trolls which will result in higher mp.

As for the rundown on what races can be what, here ya go:

Humans: Warlock, Warrior, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue
Gnomes: Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Warlock
Dwarves: Hunter, Warrior, Paladin, Priest, Rogue
Night Elves: Hunter, Druid, Warrior, Priest, Rogue

Orcs: Hunter, Warlock, Warrior, Shaman, Rogue
Trolls: Hunter, Warrior, Shaman, Rogue, Priest, Mage
Taurens: Hunter, Druid, Warrior, Shaman
Undead: Warrior, Warlock, Mage, Rogue, Priest

Undead seem to be the only race seems to have traits so far and they are powerful traits. I believe they have imunity to fear, resistance to shadow magic, and can breath underwater. They are by far the most powerful race until the others get their traits added.

Check under "class" under "Basic information" on the left hand menu bar.

Allakazham has the starting .stats of each race that can be that class.

That should help you decide which is the most "powerful" race for that class.

I wouldn't say undead are most powerful. I would say they are different. Just like I wouldn't say that Plainsrunning makes Tauren superior or inferior at transportation, only different. (OK, that statement is arguable, not so much the first one.)

And I will say that undead players sure like to whine at the spells that specifically affect undead. OMG, noOOo, it's a paladin! They're gimp against everything else, but they pwnz0r us! WTF, that priest just cast shackle on us rather than the mage being able to sheep us. Nerf!

Azuarc is definitely right about Undead players... they picked a race that has powerful advantages, then whine unrelentingly about undead-specific counters.

In reality, the statistical difference between, say, a gnome mage and a troll mage is something like four points here and there. In other words, virtually nill. There might be some advantage to this early on, but the first 10 levels go by really quickly regardless of who/what you are. After that, with all pieces of gear giving bonuses to stats, the differences in starting stats virtually disappear. You can't pick a gimp choice, basically, and one is hardly "better" than the other.

Same concept with the racial advantages/disadvantages. Thus far, with the limited number of races that have such ads/disads, the only one that's truly game-altering is Undead. The others are minor at best, and the Undead have disads in the form of racial counters-- Paladins and Priests. So, if you really value marginal improvement in the game over style or flavor, pick undead. Just don't whine afterwards, please.
