This game compared to FFXIFollow

exactly how long does it take to wait for partys in ffxi?

and if i play WoW, i will be a paladin, wielding a katana. Will people not want to party with me just because im not using the MOST SUITABLE weapon for a paladin, or i have lots of freedom in choosing what weapons and class i want?

It was interesting to hear your views on FFXI. Yes it is hard, yes you have to be hardcore, but the rewards are ample. After you build your character up on your server you get recognition, people send you constant party and quest invites, join a linkshell and basically there isn't a spare moment. I had a friend that is an avid gamer start FFXI with me and we played through the lower levels (which are difficult, especially without a subjob) but he quit. Since then I kept going and the game reeally became awesome. And when he checks in he's like "wow, you made it how far?". At any rate, FFXI is a great game to play.

I have heard from my clan that WoW is a bit more user friendly and allows more soloing and different ways to progress through the game. I can't wait to see it. I think that the market is big enough for both.

Cheers!

I responded to your post on the FFXI boards but I'll respond here as well. I've never been able to get into the beta tests. But I do know what I don't like about FFXI and, from these boards and reviews on sites like Gamespy, how I think WoW is going to be different.

1. LFG for hours.

....actually, that is my biggest complaint. After lvl 18 or so it becomes almost impossible to solo for exp. So you have to join or start a pty. But parties in FFXI have to fit a very strict mold to be successful. From what I've heard about WoW almost any combination of classes will work for a group since you're trying to complete a task as opposed to camps a string of mobs.

The other complaints are less irritating. Monster models never change in FFXI. A crab at lvl 60 looks the same as the crabs you fought at lvl 7. And armor retains the same look as well with only stats changing. A level 35 robe looks the same as a level 5 robe. No wonder people are so excited about AF...it's something different for them to wear.

But to be fair these are just aesthetic issues. Some people really don't like the graphics for WoW...but in the end it's all just a matter of opion. I personally have found that I just don't have the amount of time that is required to be successful in FFXI.

And as a side note...Blizzard supports Mac. SE doesn't. I have a PC desktop and a Powerbook laptop. My wife and I can play WoW together. We have to take turns on the PC with FFXI.

A katana? As in a Japanese long sword? I wish you luck finding one.

That aside, your choice of weapon is probably irrelevant to your group. They'll assume you're doing a good job of equipping yourself. Paladins can use 1- and 2-handed swords, 1- and 2-handed maces (the latter being the Warcraft paladin's "traditional" weapon), and 2-handed axes. There seems to be no shortage of any of these items-- many drop, many more are quest rewards, and there's always a bunch of blacksmiths. As a rule, there's not a tremendous difference amongst the weapon types. Paladins are very gear-dependent, but there's alot out there they can use. There just doesn't seem to be a problem for choosing what particular weapon you want.

Unless you like polearms or fist weapons... then you have a problem.

I played FFXI for 4 months
I haven't played WoW at all
And I'm already going to have to say WoW >>>> FFXI

I didn't enjoy FFXI much, it had a nice community (not saying WoW won't) but, I like to solo when I want, in FFXI you are required to part to gain any experience past level 10 (Well, basically, unless your a beastmaster) and the parties in FFXI are all basically within 2 levels of each other (Other wise you won't get as good exp) such as Lv 20-22, or 34-36, but there are lots of people to party with. Also one of the main reasons I quit is because after about level 40 you need a static party to level up, and I didn't have time to have one. And unless your a White Mage or Red Mage, you might spend alot of time looking for parties in FFXI...

I'm hoping WoW is more closer to EQ than FFXI

Ex-EQ Lover, actaully I was considering going back to EQ today until WOW comes out =\

I am only maintaining the position that you are an anomaly.

I have the beta for this game and I haven't played it in 2~3 months. It's very choppy when you fight, bad music, but the tradeskills are fun like mining. I would play FFXI over this anyday (Oh wait I do!). Just my 2 cents..

This is why your opinion is being flamed.

You're basing it on information 2-3 months old.

Try it again, then come back and post.

I find it funny he's basing his opinions on a very old beta compared to a game thats been running for about 2-3 years. Thats like me going you know i like my fully built car better than those tires over there.

Why don't you post your opinion on the FFXI boards maybe they care.

I find it funny on the FF boards that SE can do no wrong and if you try to make any criticism of them then your instantly flamed. Trust me, if blizzard makes some feature or something that is really bad im gonna be one of the first people saying it needs to be fixed. But also im not a whiny baby like all the people on the beta boards who complain when things dont go their way. Hmmm this whole post could've been summed up in this one sentence. I give constructive criticism :P

Yeah right..you should really pop into the WoW official forums. People who criticize the game will immediately get flame/bash by others..

People complain constantly on those boards and get flamed. People praise the game and get flamed. The only real constant is getting flamed. It really isn't indicative of a post unless you get REALLY flamed on the Blizz boards.

For people who say the game is SOO different from 2-3 months ago, I'd disagree. The game isn't so monumentally different that someone can say they didn't like the overall feel of the game. I only played my EQ2 beta character to level 8 and I could already tell I didn't like the game. I doubt so much is going to change before Sony releases the game that will invalidate my opinion, considering most of my beefs are with the core engine and game design. Similarly, if someone didn't like that with WoW, I have to respect that opinion. I might not respect their opinion that FFXI is better =p, but you know what they say about opinions -- everybody's got one.

Azuarc much has changed in 3 months.

-Talents
-50-60 zones
-level cap to 60
-tradeskills
-weapons and armor added
-Classes Nurfs(Mages were the best class 3 months ago)

Overall game is very different because now you get to experience much more than before. Many people basing there opinions 3 months ago haven't even played the game past 40, 3 months ago many classes didn't have talents. So the opinion on the game is not worth listening to unless they experienced everything the game has to offer.

Yes....and no.
#43 Oct 07 2004 at 8:23 PM Rating: Decent
expand on the no.
#44 Oct 07 2004 at 8:50 PM Rating: Decent
seems to me thats how it is because whenever someone says FF is bad the FF people always say well you gotta get to lvl 50 before its fun. So wouldnt that be negating their opinion until they have experienced almost everything it has to offer?
