For those of you that visit http://www.worldofwarcraft.com you'll already know about the new policy.

For those that don't, here's a link to it here

The parts I found interesting were in reference to "trademark" and "immersion-breaking".

And I wonder how far the violence one will extend.

Does a name like "Deathbringer" break that rule? Or is it only the extreme case such as "Decapitator" for example.

Thoughts, opinions, gripes, support?

Personally I'm all for it. It may mean I won't be able to use Seoman (which is from a series of books) but that's okay, wasn't going to use that name for my main anyways (Seoman just doesn't say: Night Elf Hunter).

This is a fantasy RPG, so names should fall into that area.

Dammit! Roflcopter was my top choice! Damn you, Blizzard!

Just wanted to add that "Deathbringer" would be allowed. Hell, a Blizzard rep said "Stabface" was a legal name. I think names such as "Fatchick" would not be allowed though.

Personally I'm glad to hear about all the restrictions, EQ had some really stupid names. Once I was making a character for a friend to show him EQ and telling him that they screen the names. Names that are rejected immediately were most likely taken and ones that took a while to be accepted or rejected were actually being reviewed so stupid names wouldn't get in. As an example I made a character named "Isellcars" and it was accepted. I was pissed. We laughed and played it. I really hated all the bogus names though. I did delete the character after he left.

Errr, Gihja, I think "1Enforcer" goes with the Immersion policy simply because no one begins their name with a number. Just wanna let ya know...

Man **** BLizz.

http://worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?FN=wow-general&T=343112&P=1

this really bothers me and yea i forgot about numbers in front.
I think this policie is exageratting in some ways after reading this post.
I mean the blue names are complete retards they say that Jesus is not allowed but they say that Jehsus is because it is in complete different spelling.

OH YAY LETS HAVE TOTAL RESTRICTION. But when you log on to the game there is a guy npc name ****ing Captain Crunch. They also have Donkey Kong crap in Ungoro Crater. Blizz is enforcing all this is pure hipocrisy.

Nice Venting!

You could just change your name to onenforcer or unoenforcer or something like that.

I had about 7 chars during the stress test. I like to have non-gay names most of the time. I try to keep it pretty serious you know? My guys were Gluttony, Pride, Envy, and Sloth(these were my serious-er ones, i was just doin a deadly sin theme there) then i had MiniJesus, BlackJesus, and RegularJesus(jesus theme, not so serious)

Names i could care less about, in retail i will stick to serious names anyway

They are doing that to help maintain the fantasy mood, but I think they are exaggerating a bit on some names like that girl who can't use "Barbie" haha. I think they should stop names like Jenniferlopez, Britneyspears, etc. lol but when I see Barbie I personally don't think of the doll it's just a girl name -_-

Hahaha I just read some of those posts in the thread you linked to, could someone post for me asking for their account if they are quitting the game because of the naming policy. ˆoˆ

Curious and no offense, but why do you need the "1" in the name 1Enforcer.

It just looks like your trying to be different from all the other people out there that might use the name Enforcer. (Hence the possibility of EnforcerX, xXEnforcerXx, and other various combinations like 1Enforcer). This is why this policy was added to prevent people with from doing so and making them put more thought into their names.

People whine too much.

If you're not able to use a certain name that you've been going by in other MMO's for years, why not just make up a name that fits the rules and would be similar to your old name? That way, you'll still be recognizable to the people you've gamed with in other games. And hell, if you've been gaming with them for so long, you probably have a way to communicate with them out of game, so why not just be like "Yeah, my character's name is *insert name here* now."?

I don't know, it just doesn't seem like that big of a deal to come up with a name that fits the criteria.

My name changes every game :P nanara, arimer, batzorig, Pyrobot, Revo Arca and the list goes on and on.
#22 Sep 26 2004 at 11:18 AM Rating: Decent
I would like to know why my name is starting to be the topic? Also I like to keep the same names that i make from other games so i can meet up with my guild in every game we play. Also i don't understand the big deal with my name. I added the one because i wanted to be the one and only enforcer in the game get it? I made this name when i was playing a game called Planetside which was about war. There is no reason why that in every game you play you have to make a new name because of the genre. I'm starting to like SOE even more everytime i read something by Blizzard. <-----I'll probably be flamed for this.

I really hope they don't change the name policy. They came up with it for a reason, they should stick to it.

What tends to happen is they cave into the vocal minority, that being the people that don't like the policy and complain vocally about it. But they don't take into account the people that don't like the policy and because they like it, they don't say anything.

On that thread that Ghija linked:

Iroar is obviously "I roar". Of course the GM was going to say no to any suggestions on different variations the person came up with, it's obvious the person was still looking to use the "I roar" combination as his name.

What he should have done was say "thank you Mr. GM, i'll come up with something else" and gone and made the name variation without checking with the GM. Just keep doing it til he finds one that sticks.

That's like asking your parents something, they say no, then you ask to do the same thing but in a different way. Of course they're going to say no.

As for Earache. EarAche wouldn't be allowed, but Earache is. Why, because like someone posted in that thread, you don't know that it's supposed to be the medical name, but if you adjust how it's pronounced it actually makes it a cool name.

I really hope they don't change the policy.

I use different names in all the games I've played and I've never had a problem finding/playing with the same people over and over. The ones I want to play new games with, I have outside means of getting in contact with. Each new game has a different "flavor" to it, so I adjust my names to match that flavor somewhat.

If I play a war game, i'm not going to come up with a fantasy or sci-fi name. Same if I play a Sci-Fi game, I'll come up with an appropiate name for that.

There have been times that I've kept the same name, but it always ends up being used for an alt or mule character. The name of my main has always changed from game to game (and WoW will be no different as Seoman isn't going to be the name of my main.)

They probably change it to be a bit more liberal when it comes to the policy. You see, the Warcraft games are known for their various pop culture references and WoW is no different. What I'm seeing from the beta gamers is that they are using what made Warcraft popular and using it against Blizzard stating it is a double standard. As a result, this kinda puts Blizzard in a corner and in order to avoid looking bad they'll have to change somethings in the policy.

While I'm not for a change, I can see the policy changing. I find it sad that these beta gamers will use something that has been in almost every Blizzard game and try to use that as a way to manipulate the way the game is played. For being a bunch of whining 5 yr olds they sure know how to play people like puppets on a string...

On a side note, the gamers are now trying to enforce the rule on Blizzard employees. *bangs head on a wall* Dammit, why couldn't I be a beta tester?! Those whiners are sooooo undeserving!
