DPS as related to Weapon SpeedFollow

#1 Sep 19 2004 at 1:45 AM Rating: Decent
Does anyone know how your char's power rating relates to his dps? Does having a big attack power add a static number to each of your hits (kinda like damage bonus in EQ) or does it increase the DPS rating of your weapon? basically I'm asking if there is an advantage for a character with really high strength to choose a faster/slower weapon to optimize his actual parsed-out damage per second?

Are you talking about strength or that little hokey statistic on the character window? As far as I know, that number is just a reflection of your weapon damage, but I've never paid much attention since I don't play a true melee class.

I played the stress test beta and there were 2 melee related stats. one that affected the frequency w/ which you hit (attack i think) and one that added dmg to successful hits (power i believe) i was wondering if the amount of damage added is related to the weapon speed. for example, does a given power rating give a weapon w/ speed 2 +20 damage also give a weapon speed 4 +40 damage? or does a given power rating simply add +20 damage to all weapons. the latter situation would make weapons w/ a slow speed much less useful. the first case would eliminate a lot of the innane parsing and such that made eq almost like a research project. hopefully that clears up the confusion about my first post.

As far as I can tell, the damage increase given by the "power" number scales up according to your weapon. This was an issue with the shaman before: shaman's Rockbiter weapon buff gave a flat damage increase to each attack, so shamen flocked to daggers and other fast weapons because they'd get the most out of it. Since then Blizzard changed Rockbiter to affect your "power" stat, for the explicit reason of taking speed out of the equation.

The advantages of a fast weapon versus a slow one come down to this: fast weapons get more crits and are better for interrupting spells, while slow weapons (because their damage is front-loaded) are better for dealing with heavy armor and damage-reduction abilities.
