First you have to assume that the release date that all the stores out there for November is correct. If that was true than the Open Beta should start near the end of September or early October.

Thats saying the stores have the release dates correct.

However, this is Blizzard we are talking about. The game could come out November 2005 for all we know. So to TRUTHFULLY answer the question:

No one knows.

WoW actually really messed up with the release date.

If anything, they should have come out 2-3 weeks BEFORE EQ2, not same day (if comes out as scheduled now, 11/15/04) or after.

MMO's come with a free month. They use that free month to hook the buyer into playing that MMO.

EQ2 comes out first. The undecided MMO player (one not currently playing a game, not decided on EQ2 or WoW, or the one looking for a new game) tries out EQ2. They have 30 days of free play. What may happen during those 30 days, they get hooked.

Then WoW comes out. They lose a chunk of customers, those that tried EQ2 and got hooked.

Now if WoW had come out first, they stood a good chance of getting a large percentage of the undecideds. Coming out 2-3 weeks before EQ2, the undecideds would have been in the middle of their free month, less likely to buy a new game during that trial period.

So even if WoW lost some of the undecideds to EQ2 after the trial month, WoW's opening day sales numbers would have been greater then EQ2.

Now coming out on the same day is the worst. That's because it forces the undecideds to choose 1 or the other (EQ2 or WoW). There won't be that many people that will buy both in the same month. They'll choose one or the other. Instead of having a shot at all the undecided, WoW will only get some of them.

As it stands right now, I don't see any reason why it can't come out on the 15th. That's still 2 months away, and there will be a closed beta and another open beta during those 2 months.

And as alot of beta testers have said, it's close to a finished product now.

I'm thinking the 15th is a good date.

I haven't talked to any other tester who thought WoW was close to being complete. Half the talents are still missing. The majority of the talents in the game now need some serious lovin. Warlock and paladin are getting needed overhaul. All spells and skills post level thirty five have to be put in. Bliz posted tradeskills are getting some more lovin. There's more, but I'm tired of typing it.

Bliz has lots left to do and a November release won't happen unless they pull off a miracle. Going by Bliz's past history, I wouldn't expect it. They put out the most polished games, because they don't rush to release.

On a side note, another in game gold wager offered up to anyone that thinks EQ2 box sells will be greater than WoW's in the first month. Release before or after EQ2 doesn't matter. People want WoW like a crackhead needs a fix.

Yeah, Im with Stumpy here. I don't think Blizzard is even worried about the release of EQ2 as most of its fanbase could really care less about the game as well.

The game will come out when it comes out. Stores say November but we all know better.

Remember when Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness came out? It had an add for Starcraft on the back of it. Starcraft didnt come out until several years later. I remember waiting for that game like a kid needing a new kidney.

I remember the long Starcraft wait. Preordered from EB and picked it up in store on release day. What a great game. I still reload it every three months or so when I build a new machine.

Seoman, are you implying that EQ2 is gonna be out this year? If that's the case, that's par for the course with Sony. The game is far from being ready as it stands right now. There's far too much content and balance testing that needs to go on right now. I realize content and balance testing is not something Sony is known for doing extensively, but if the game is out before the end of the year, I can almost assure you I won't buy it.

When will EverQuest II be released?
EverQuest II will launch in 2004.

Hmmmm, look at it this way, if you do purchase the game, you'll be able to play the game while searching for all the bugs! Paying for beta is fun!

On a side note, I just wanted to say that after visiting the EQ2 forums to look for impressions of the game, I found that the beta forums are not for the public's eyes. Looks like someone is afraid of criticism going public!

What about SWG Azuarc, that game needed at least 6 months more of work, and sony still released it. imo SWG was the buggiest game I ever played. I wouldn't rule out sony trying to release EQ2 befor WoW.
#12 Sep 16 2004 at 10:54 AM Rating: Decent
They also locked the forums of SWG to nonsubscribers for a while too so the nonsubscribers couldnt see all the bad threads about it :P

I don't remember anything locked for unsubscibers......... For SOE games you can read all the posts you want but you can't post unless your a subscriber.

ok thx. I do have faith in blizzard, but from what ive read on the forums of late, it seems that they might not make the date that sum have posted, though i HOPE they do. I can wait for th eopen, thats a given, but i hope the actual realease date doesnt get pushed back ALOT. Also on the note fo EQ2, my cousin has played all the EQ's and since he has, he was invited to play in the EQ2 beta, problem was hes not 18, so he cant do it.
thx all

Noone remembers when SOe locked down the forums to nonsubscribers? It was like that for at least a few months. Now City of heroes has locked posting permissions on theres for subscribers only. I dont like this new trend in MMO message boards.
#17 Sep 18 2004 at 9:50 PM Rating: Decent
Well would you like that the main boards would be spammed with crap like is such and such game any good?
#18 Sep 18 2004 at 9:58 PM Rating: Decent
Well thats uusually what a general forum is for. I can understand them locking down other headings such as guild recruitment, tech support etc but locking down general is kinda dumb. Also SOE made it where you couldnt even read the forums if you werent a subscriber to any of their games. It didnt last long due to the community uproar.
#19 Sep 21 2004 at 5:51 AM Rating: Default
Man I just hope this comes soon, I quit the god awful FFXI and I'm really looking forward to trying out WoW.
#20 Sep 21 2004 at 2:01 PM Rating: Decent
My Prediction:

Open Beta will last one week. Any longer and it could actually hurt sales.

People will use that week to evaluate if they want to buy it or not. So Blizzard will want the game to be as polished as possible. So Open Beta will probably start about 2 weeks before the game hits the store shelves.

So the soonest I would expect to see Open Beta would be the last week of October or first week of November. If the game is delayed it will take even longer.

Sony's usual strategy. If they actually put out a 3/4 finished EQ2 I will be beyond amazed.

You can also except one class to be unbelievably overpowered at launch (CH for galaxies), a huge community uproar, and then a huge nerf for the class with a promise of a combat balance that still hasn't come.

They were locked for about 6 months. The recent unlock is just that, recent.

I was in the WoW Stress Test, and I'm currently in the EQ2 beta. With that, I think WoW is a LOT closer to release than EQ2.

Of the two games, I like WoW MUCH better. EQ2's graphics are FAR superior compared to WoW, but EQ2 lacks the soul and spirit that WoW has. Of them WoW is just a lot more fun, fogiving and easy to play and learn. Of the interfaces I like WoW better too. EQ2 takes a "Windows" menu style approach and even has BLACK BARS along the top and bottom of the screen kind of like playing a Widescreen movie on a fullscreen TV(taking up about 25% of your screen)!! WoW fills your full screen with the interface taking up minor areas. EQ2 keeps zones while WoW has no zones no matter where you go. No more "Loading, please wait...." I can't tell you how much nicer it is to just go anywhere you want without loading screens. WoW also gets you in the game MUCH faster, taking maybe 20-25 seconds compared to EQ's minute and a half plus(Not actually timed, just how it feels, WoW is FAST though).

Lastly I don't really want to give SOE any more money. I played EQ for most of the 5 years and it was a grind most of the time. If I sound jaded, it's because I am, but if EQ2 were something to make me take back those feelings I gladly would, but sadly can't. It's still a lot further from finished though and unless I can get back in WoW I'll be playing EQ2 on and off. Blizzard on the other-hand has a rep for making great games and this one is right there with the best. I do concider WoW better than any MMORPG I've played(having played Ultima Online, Anarcy Online, DAoC, EQ, EQ2-beta, Matrix Online-beta, WoW- stress test beta).

Stress test I played the Hunter class and enjoyed it greatly. I reached level 17. I'm sure I could have hit 20, but because I knew my time was limited I wanted to explore and see if there were good places off the beaten trail to level, and I wanted to see the other lands. I wanted to best take advantage of my play-time so that when the game goes live I have at least some edge on the masses of players that will all be in the same areas.

Sadly the areas are designed in such a way that everyone will pretty much be in all the same areas at the same levels. What is a good idea though is that when you're running low on quests or they're just getting too hard, you can go to other race's areas(of your own team) and do quests there. Quests are by far the better ways to gain exp. Some people grind but that's boring. Quests tend to give reasonable items, experience and cash at any given point.

All I got for now, I'll be haunting the boards from time to time, peace.

Good to hear how EQ 2 is, Kerik. I was never excited yet was curious. Careful, though. SOE might have ninjas hiding everywhere ready to execute a kill for even mentioning EQ2 outside of the beta forums.

After playing WoW I couldn't care less if they kicked me out. I'm suffering WoW withdrawl. :P I've been studying everything WoW I can. EQ2 is really hard to play, not meaning in difficulty, but more as in having driven a $50,000 BMW(WoW) and then getting stuck with a Ford Focus(EQ2).

I would personally figure that the open beta will come out around th eend of september (doubt it) and the beggining of October(hoping, right now i just hope i can get in and have a BLAST playing

Hunter, I'm with you, just holding my breath till I can get in again. It was a blast and I just want more. My main purpose this time is to play the Paladin class. I plan on 2-boxing when the game comes out and think a Hunter/Paladin duo would be a strong combination. Anything I can learn before the game actually goes live is just a massive advantage versus people who haven't played at all yet.

Oh yeah, and I want to help Blizzard test it too, yeah, that's the ticket!
