Opinion question for all you beta testers. Didn't want to post in "ask a beta tester" because I didn't want to crowd the thread will a lot of answers to this.

How hard is it to travel between cities? Darnassus to Ironforge? Undercity to Orgrimmar? Just examples.

Do you have to be careful every step to avoid monsters? Are the encounters on the road random?

In FFXI (yes, another FFXI comparasion) some areas it was hard to get thru when lower level because of the concentration of monsters.

In UO you can go from city to city very easily and avoid monsters.

What is WoW like?

Yeah i hated how jueno was surrounded by high lvl enemies yet you needed to get there for your choco quest. Also taking a chocobo from say windurst to bastok took forever and you had to get rank 5 for a airship pass.

Yet another example of "FFXI's 2 Ways to Do Everything"

1) Get high level help
2) Sneak/Invisible

what sucked for those of us who started on the first day of US release was all the high lvls were JP players :P so there wasnt much help there, when i got to lvl 62 sam i helped alot of people the best i could but sam isnt very good for a helping newbie class :P But your right about the 2 ways, there should be a third one though that is Buy help.

It is not completely safe but if you just look around you should be safe enough on the roads... then just a quick zepplin ride from undercity to orgimar at least-- not sure about others.

I just did this yesterday for the first time. I was a lvl 12 Tauren Warrior. Left Thunder Bluff on foot to the Barrens because I had no flight paths yet. Made it to Crossroads (a city in the Barrens) with no trouble at all but I did see a lot of stuff near the roads that could kill me if they did aggro (mobs that aggro have their names in red instead of yellow). If you give them room it is no trouble.

Once in Crossroads I learned the flight path between there and Thunder Bluff then I hit the road to Durotar and the cities of Razor Hill and Orgrimmar. After another walk I noticed that if you stick to the road and just give room to RED mobs I had no problems. After crossing a bridge I immediatly noticed the surrounding landscape changes and I was in Durotar and not far from Razor Hill. There is nothing special in Razor Hill besides trainers and quests, so I headed north to Orgrimmar.

Once in Orgrimmar I found the flight path there and then searched for the Zepplin station. Orgrimmar is HUGE by the way and I got lost real fast. There are nice little signs though telling you where to go, so I eventually found my way back outside. Outside Orgrimmar and to the east was the Zepplin station. Zepplin rides are free and WAY faster than airships are in FFXI.

Also, wyvern rides do cost money and my lvl I would rather walk and kill mobs along the way to get more money/loot. The wyverns rides are faster than walking but you have no control of them and its just for scenic value.

Duh, forgot to say how easy all that was. EXTREMELY. I had fun just visiting each town for about 5 to 10 minutes then continuing on. It took me roughly 25-30 minutes to get from Thunder Bluff to Undercity at lvl 12 and I have no problems whatsoever and found some pretty easy to find flightpaths for the wyverns (the wyvern master will have a green exclamation point above his head instead of the common yellow one that quest givers have).

Playing a mage and travelling from city to city is relatively safe. I haven't encountered any Mobs that could kill me on the roads. There are guards that roam the roads and clear off any Mobs that come too close. Don't plan on hunting near roads - the guards can kill your target rather quickly.

Air travel on a Griffon is awesome. You don't have to control it - Just enjoy the ride!! Very nice touch to the game

Traveling is very easy to do when you want to get from Town A to Town B. Just follow the road, check your map (very detailed in info when you want to get somewhere) and look at the signs (speaking as a night elf here. Not sure about horde.) When it comes to important quest areas (like the Master's Glaive Cult area), people tend to get lost. If anything, thats mostly due to the fact that no one reads their quest logs.

As for monster aggro, every monster so far aggros. You can tell by pointing at them with your cursor and it will show one of 2 colors: Yellow or Red. Yellow is passive while Red is aggressive. At this point of the game, any red will aggro even if they are 10 levels lower then you. Oh how I hate my trips to Darnassus and Dolanaar when a lv 6 spider aggros my lv 14 druid ;_;

I actually like that. In UO an aggressive monster is aggressive no matter how strong you are. In FFXI once a monster cons as "too weak" then it no longer aggroes you. It's kind of stupid.

Once aggressive, it should always be aggressive.

I kind of skimmed through this thread so what I say may have been said already to some degree or another.

Yes traveling from city to city is easy, for the major cities there are flight paths (where you fly gryphons/hippogryphs/giant bats/etc.) to different major cities (I know that there is an automatic flight path from Ironforge to Stormwind and vice versa). In order to get flight paths to other smaller towns/villages you need to find a gryphon master in that town/village and open it up. After that you can fly to it anytime.

Walking is easily done. You just follow a main road and there are usually signs that direct you where other towns are. You can also look at your minimap and it will have an arrow pointing to the nearest town on it.

Now this is not to say that if you have to go to a new area that is too high in level for you that you won't be attacked and die. It can happen. I remember going into Westfall from Elwynn Forest for the first time...died horribly at the hands of a Harvest Golem, and pop I am in the graveyard of Sentinel Hill which is the town that is in Westfall.

There is a sense of danger too. I remember making a mad dash for Darkshire through Duskwood at lvl 16 (Duskwood is a lvl 20+ zone) and while I did make it, I almost didn't make it out alive. You see in Darkshire there is a random Abomination attack on the town (maybe triggered from aquest? I dunno..). I was scared silly and nearly ran the wrong way as I fumbled the controls lol.

At any rate you should find that traveling in this game is easy and very beautiful. Everytime I get into a new zone I find myself looking around in stunned silence. The scale of the 'zones' is so grand and beautiful that you'll never get bored with the scenery.

heh, you weren't the only one scared into never going back to Duskwood for a while because you were attacked by Stitches the first time through. Stitches, the abomination, is a random(?) event that is linked to the completion of a quest - listen to the shouts in zone from the NPCs and you'll know when you actually have to worry.

Most flight points are not difficult to reach if you are a reasonable level to get there. There are a couple that aren't really - Southshore and Stonetalon Peak come to mind - but I maintain the preceding statement.

well, you can jump off the zep and fall to ur death, there isnt all around guardrails if you consider that dangerous......
as a mage, you get teleport at lvl 20, talk to the teleport trainer in major city x to train teleport to city x spell. at lvl 40 you get portal to city x spell from the same trainers, that i havent had the chance to try out in stress test.
