FYI, we are going to be changing part of our naming policy for the upcoming stress test. We want to keep the worlds look and feel to be that of fantasy. With this test, it allows us to also test our support philosophies, however this will only be supported on the stress test servers currently. You can find the below posting at https://www.worldofwarcraft.com/policy/naming.shtml

Addendum for Stress-Test Servers Only
We have gone to great lengths to ensure that your experience in the land of Azeroth is as enjoyable and immersive as possible. However, this immersion can be quickly broken when you see the stately Tauren Hunter named "IOwnsU" or the imposing Night Elf Druid "ErnestBorgnine." In an attempt to maintain the suspension of disbelief, we will be disallowing all non fantasy-related names for the World of Warcraft Stress Test. This currently applies only to the Stress Test realms and not to the existing Closed Beta Test realms. You see, Alpha, Beta, and Stress Tests are not only an opportunity for us to test the stability of the software, but also an opportunity to test our support. Depending on the results of this test, we may or may not add this to our retail naming policy. Thank you for your cooperation in this little trial run and enjoy your travels!
Non Fantasy-Related This category includes names which:

Deviate from classic high fantasy names
Are references to pop culture or generally anachronistic
Are statements in and of themselves
If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:
Be prompted to select a new name
Be given a warning

In other words, names like "Gandalf", "TEHW1Z@RDl337", and "HomerSimpson" will not be allowed and you will be chatting with a GM very soon if caught with such names. So, stress testers, keep in mind that you'll be needing to become a bit more creative when creating the name of your character. Enjoy!

Side note: Keep in mind that Stress test will be open for business today at 12pm PDT.

I hope they carry this over to retail, and make it include variation names.

It's okay to be named Legolas, but all the clones: Legolais, Leegolas, Legolaas, etc.. ugh...

Simple method for making a name if you are too unoriginal. Stare straight up, and hit 3 random letters on the keyboard.

Whatever three letters you get, splice a letter or two between each of them, and you've got an insta-name.

rux:
Aradux
Runaxa
Oreudix
Rounex
Ruxak
etc.

cyb:
Chyaba
Acybaba
Cyebos
Jaciyib
Chyb
etc.

Nice info. I'm glad Blizzard is doing this. I can't remember how many times I have seen those CORNY names like those mentioned above. Are younger kids these days really that uncreative? (that makes me sound so old lol)

/clap Blizzard

I hope this makes it to retail in order to keep the fantasy-style alive. If not, oh well.

Btw, if you don't know what to name your character, you can visit: wow.warcry.com and find the Name Generator on the menu. It generates some pretty good Warcraft-like names for all races and genders.

Good to know im not gonna see any of those names. No more Imadruid or imamule. This is like the plauge in ffxi. Teaming up with people called dabouncer lookimamithra come to mind (shudders)

Peoples names don't bother me at all i don't know why it should bother others but oh well. Why can't Blizzard just add a Name Generator for people who are not creative.

I have a horde toon on the pvp server named KillMePlz. Although I wouldn't use it in retail, I find I get ganked alot less with this name. More pointing and laughing by alliance players that come across me.

Play on FFXI and you'll find out why.

Drizztt
Drizzzt
Drizztguy
Legolais
Legoolas
Aaragon
XlegolasX
Tiddus
Tiduus
Yunna
Yuuna
XCloudX
Clouud

Those are actual names.

It's kind of annoying when you're trying to think if you know the person and you have to ask yourself "Was he the Tidus with two u's or two d's"?

There's a good deal of people that like to advertise their substance of choice on Unicorn...lot of StonedWhatever or WeedWhatever, and a staggering amount of people with beer in their name. I've seen Rikjames and Rickjames and Rickjaymes running around too.
I'd be nice to see this in retail, it's really not hard to make an original name...

Even some real names make good fantasy names:

Derrick, Ashton, Jordan, Aizlyn, Eamon, Ian, Jordana, Hayley, Katerina, Katya, Kristina, Crystal, etc...

Wilhelm for William

Eduard for Edward

Krystopher for Christopher

There is some of this in the beta right now, and a lot of people have said their piece about it on the forums. (And an even larger number blast back with freedom of speech arguments.)

The truth is though, if someone has an utterly uncreative name, and they ask me to group, I will say NO.

I dON't TrUSt pEOpLe WhO WRiTe wITh MuLtIpLe CaPiTaLS iN tHEiR NaMe, eSPeCIAllY.

Personally, and I know it was wrong of me, but..

I automatically thought differently of someone with an utterly uncreative name or a cloned name.

Being the original Legolas, Aragorn, Cloud, Tidus, Seoman (in my case) is fine, but if the name is taken, pick another name.

The only thing I hate is when you come up with a unique name and someone else starts using it.

What kind of database are they going to have to build in order to prevent such names from being taken.

You could just as easily use your own name, type it backwards and have yoru "fantasy name".
