Questions on spellsFollow

#1 Jul 04 2004 at 3:04 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all,

This is directed at you Beta testers and any Blizz persons that feel they would like to throw a bone out there. So please bear with me, as I have been perusing the forums and really haven't seen any majorly detailed stuff on spells.

1. Concerning Mages summons for Food and Water. Whats the deal here? ie Level one seems to be Normal food and water while increasing levels the water becomes purer and the food - Bread becomes some other type of bread (someone really thinks Rye should be a better bread?). Anyways what effects do summon food have or what purpose in the game?

2. Mages spell - Arcane Explosion - Described as doing damage to all targets in the area on 10 yards. Is this to friendly targets as well (ie PC's)?

3. Paladins Wisdom aura - Is this significant? Can mana regeneration be explained a bit please?

4. Shaman Totems in general, how good are they? Can they be stacked for multiple bonuses (differing types, and what about identical types)?

5. Shaman Purge - Does it remove Debuffs placed on target as well? Lets say the target had one beneficial buff, and two negative buffs. Shammy casts a level 2 type purge which removes two magical effects. Will it remove only one beneficial effect on the target leaving the two negative effects, or will it remove one of each? Also is there a order that anyone was able to discern on magical effects removal?

6. Concerning Shaman totems do AE spells affect them. Most only have 5 hp's it would seem that 5 hp's would be very weak to an average AOE spell.

7. Concerning Shaman - He seems very much a party member instead of solo member. Lets say at level 8, could anyone tell me the average mana of a Shaman at level 8, and what some tactics would be against a mob at this level?

Well thanks to everone taking time to read and reply to this post. Have a happy 4th!

R,
NachoAdept

Food and water can be consumed to quickly replenish health and mana. The higher level summons replenish higher amounts of health/mana and do it faster.

No AoE spells affect friendly targets.

"Increases the mana regeneration of party members within 30 yards by 6 every 5 seconds." At level 26, when they get this, it isn't really the cat's pajamas. A level 26 mage with decent equipment would be regenerating something like.. 18 mana every second or two? Not sure on the numbers, but I expect this aura line to be moved down in level requirements or buffed up a bit, as it's really low on the effectiveness scale compaired to the Paladin's other auras.

They're plenty good. You can have one of each totem type (Fire, Air, Earth, Water) out at a time. I'm pretty sure identical totems from two different shamen (that's right, I went there) don't stack, much like paladin auras.

Yes AE spells affect them (...IIRC.) Totems are powerful, but they are easily negated by a quick-thinking player.

I can't answer #5 or #7. Azuarc? Tartesk? Save me!

A note on mana regeneration...characters regain mana at a rate of roughly 1/3 their spirit every 2 seconds. My main has a spirit of a little over 100, so I can get back about 1000 per minute. Considering that character is a 45 priest, and has close to 3000 mana, that's noticeable but not always enough on its own.

Drinks, however, add short-term mana regeneration so long as you remain idle while you drink. You can't drink during battle obviously. But if I drink Moonberry Juice, which gives back roughly 1800 mana in 40 seconds, and in that time I get back another 700, I can almost completely refill my mana.

This is why, while most casters are more spirit-centered, mages usually care more about intelligence -- they have free drinks, so they just use it all up during the battle and regain it afterwards at a heightened rate. Other classes don't want to do this because it gets expensive and more importantly takes up inventory space. Not buying enough drinks and running out before you finish your adventure can be very frustrating.

Purge removes effects that are considered to be "magic"-al. All effects are of some type, be it magic, curse, poison, disease, etc. Purge will remove negative effects on you and your allies, and positive effects on your opponents. It will not remove the spells you want to keep.

Regarding a shaman, reading this question gave me the excuse to finally try one. I just leveled a Tauren shaman to level 8. (moo.) I had a little over 200 mana.
I didn't get a chance to try the level 8 spells, so I can't say how the taunting totem or lightning shield pan out, but before that I would cast the damage reduction totem and buff my weapon, and then pull a creature with a few casts of lightning before using the instant nuke earth spell. That would bring them down between a quarter and half of their health, and I'd melee from there. Maybe I'd have to use the instant nuke again if the target started running.

Thanks to everyone for thier thoughtful replies. I have been waiting for this game since its inception and am having high hopes for it. This will allow me to do more research at this point and come up with more ideas and even more questions. About all I can do is live vicariosuly through you Beta Testers ^ ^ Anywho, I'll be really busy for about 1.5 weeks perhaps then I'll have time to peruse this again.

Does it cost anything for mages to summon food and drink? What's to keep a mage from summoning food and drink for everyone after every battle?

whats the deal with ranks beside them? do you have to gain rank to use them, if so, how do you gain rank?

Fantasia - summoned food and drinks disappear when you log. And you aren't always going to be working with a mage unless you are the mage. Yes, it's true that mages will usually freely give out summoned items to group members if they ask, but I have the benefit of using mage drinks probably less than a quarter of my playtime.

Vandroth - A higher rank of a spell is just a higher level version of the same spell. I'm up to the seventh level of Holy Word: Shield, and it would be really annoying to remember them as minor shield, greater shield, holy shield, divine shield, etc.

You train a new rank of a skill just as you would train the first level of the skill.

I plan to be the mage (for at least one of my alts), and that's one of the reasons I want to be a mage ^^ This game sounds really neat, I hope the spells are cool because I much prefer to be a caster than a melee-er.

higher rank = bigger effect. be it damage, time, or bigger number change.
