IT'S BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://eq2.zam.com/story.html?story=26375

----

* On May 11th, the EQ2 team announced along with the daily "we're still down" message:
Quote:
All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

* On May 12th SOE released their "make good" update:
Quote:
We are currently in the process of an extensive upgrade to our network to further protect your information from future attacks. It will likely be at least a few more days before we restore our services, and when we come back online, here is what you can expect for each of our game services.

First and foremost, all impacted players will receive 30 days of game time added to the end of the current billing cycle in addition to one day for each day the system is down. Additionally, many games are offering a variety of in-game items and special events to welcome players back once our services resume (per the outline below). This is true for both PC and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system based products.

...EverQuest II and EverQuest II Extended: A series of events, including Double XP, Double Guild XP, Loot Bonanza, and City Festivals.

...And finally, our Station Access subscribers will receive 500 Station Cash, in addition to the subscription time and items listed above.

* On May 12th SOE also announced Identity Theft protection for U.S. customers: http://www.soe.com/securityupdate/debix.vm
* On May 17th SOE announced ID Theft protection for EU customers: http://eq2.zam.com/story.html?story=26396

Last night around 2:30 A.M. PDT people started complaining about not being able to log in and receiving some odd errors, if any errors at all. Their were even a few people talking about not being able to zone, but others weren't having any problems zoning. The errors were ranging from invalid login credentials, inactive status on active accounts, and non-existent user accounts.

Just to clarify, a hashed password is NOT your actual password. It's a number generated from your password using a mathematical algorithm. What the authentication servers see is the actual hash code, not your password, which is why when you lose your password it can't be retrieved for you, it has to be reissued. Also, you password can't be obtained from the hash code without knowing the algorithm.

Basically, this means that unless another authentication server is using the exact same algorithm, your hash code will not work anywhere else, even if you are using the same password. It's still a good idea to change your password for anything else using the same one though, especially if you use the same username.

Thanks for the information, I wasn't even sure entirely what that meant. I agree though, it'll still be a good idea to consider changing passwords!

Hey Guys,

I received an email regarding all this SoE stuff... I had been taking a break from EQ2 (playing Rift) and also just recently switched from PS3 to Xbox prior to the hacking that took place... However, my personal data was still stored for the PSN network and EQ2. I guess what I am wondering is, aside from using my credit card, the culprits couldn't steal my identity without my social security number correct? That is the major thing I am concerned with at the moment, but I have never given my SSN out to SoE or PSN and the email stated that it was name, phone numbers, addresses, passwords... What a mess...

Unfortunately these types of people are capable of a lot. A lack of a SSN does make it more difficult but I'm sure they could figure out other things to do. Personally, all of my stuff has been fine. However, with the personal information of so many accounts out there potentially compromised, the chance of it being someone reading this is fairly slim--but there is always that chance. Don't risk it, be vigilant, and check your credit reports. From http://www.soe.com/securityupdate/ :

Quote:
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

Experian: 888-397-3742; www.experian.com; P.O. Box 9532, Allen, TX 75013
Equifax: 800-525-6285; www.equifax.com; P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241
TransUnion: 800-680-7289; www.transunion.com; Fraud Victim Assistance Division, P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790

Article on the net shortly before the initial playstation network "issue"

http://venturebeat.com/2011/04/03/hacktivist-group-anonymous-launches-payback-cyber-attack-on-sony/

...and soe's first response to taking their gaming networks down was that they were being cautious, making sure... due to the playstation hack.

Then shortly after, they release a statement saying oh noes your information got hacked!
Who else saw that coming?

Anyway, I wonder when the service will be restored. 12hrs since a we're not sure.

Anonymous is an activist group who specializes in DDoS attacks and other service disruptions in the name of freedom of information (irony's a *****, ain't it). Accusing them of theft is more than a stretch.

Interesting, so a group retaliates for what they feel is an illegal or immoral business practice by doing something...illegal? humans. :/

I read some of the comments on the news section. Pretty lulzy. "Sony did this on purpose! They knew this was my vacation week! I will never play another SOE game... blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda..."

People.

[poll]
[question]What would be good Compensation for the downtime?[/question]
[choice] 2 Free months of Membership [/choice]
[choice] Free Mythical in game item per character [/choice]
[choice] Grant newly made toons 30 free lvls [/choice]
[choice] Grant all toons FREE Mythical Appearance Armor crate [/choice]
[choice] Grant all toons FREE 20 packs of LON Cards with garanteed 2 Loot cards [/choice]
[/poll]

I hope no one thinks this is too outrageous, but we are talking about possible
Identity Theft and or banking and credit card info stolen.

It's quite a big deal in my opinion, as one who has had his credit cards stolen
on line twice... I feel its the leasts they can do.

Why is everyone expecting handouts from SoE? And everyone wonders why they treat you like "little people".

Because everyone expects something for nothing.

We're being compensated for each day the servers are down and that is all they owe us. On top of that we're getting a free month, which is their way of thanking us for being patient.

And why does everyone keep blaming Sony for this? Is it the bank's fault when they get robbed? Is it the driver's fault when they get carjacked? No, it's not, and this isn't Sony's fault either.

SOE isnt only the one that got attacked.

i check several news sites under "hack sites" for the news, whoa, omg!

FBI are also under attack by hackers, slowing them down by 25%-30% on investigations.

few newspapers, public facebook sites, some banks and some stores such as BestBuy.com and few other chain stores were even "exposed".

so now, those so-call hackers claim to plan 3rd major attack on Sony but most games are offlined and forum shut down for safety measures.
Sony will not be alone, that was on tip of iceberg.

i feel that, congress at Washington DC should back off with Sony, they need to look at bigger picture, even Sony is at fault for being too slow to make better and more secured game Launcher, that was big wake up call for SOE after they were warned many months ago for many flaws they have.

these attacks are more "professionals", more of criminal group(s).

anyway, as i checked most sites, the trends always seemed centered around april, may, and june, those other types of hackers are holding some kind of sick game or contest to score big points, they dont care about others to have some griefs or suffering, or forced to protect idenities extremely.

China, just recently had arrested some hacker cell and discovered stolen accounts from other games and some from ebay's, amazon's, and other electronic stores' accounts.

hackers are attacking on global scale for this year contest event for "ultimate cracker" of the year title. not just from american crime cells, but some in european crime cells, and some asian crime cells too.

FBI considered them as "Cyber Terrorists", not as web pranksters.

Hollywood were so wrong, they "glamorized" hackers, there so many different breeds like one movie played by Angelica Jolies back in 1980's flicks, and original Matthew's Wargame movie, that can be deadly in wrong hands.
