New player, a few questionsFollow

As the title implies, I will be checking out EQII as soon as it downloads ... but I had a couple quick questions I thought I'd get answers for.

First thing, I have seen in other threads that you should be able to play the game as it downloads, but I do not see an option to log into the game while it is downloading. What am I missing here? (I am downloading the high res US client)

Secondly, I am considering which server would be a good fit for myself. I will be a bit more of a casual player as I hold two jobs and am married with 2 kiddos (1 being a newborn). I enjoy more PvE and don't care much for PvP, and I while I wouldn't mind a busy server, I think I'd fit more with a mid-sized one ... any suggestions there?

My previous MMO experience is limited to FF games, which I was playing FFXIV but some recent updates have somehow managed to make it so I can't log into the game. With that, and other frustrations with the game ... I think I'm calling it in on it. I enjoyed solo friendly and melee classes on those jobs and was wondering what suggestions there would be on class choices that may fit along those lines.

Thanks for any suggestions you could throw my way, and I'm looking forward to getting into the EQ world.

First you should have been able to choose between a full download or a streaming download when you began the process. Once you've started you are probably committed to that method.

Next, are you playing on a subscription or on the new F2P version because afaik, there are separate servers for the F2P version of the game (I only play on a subscription so I don't know for sure). This would be a factor in recommending a server to you.

Regarding a character class for you to play, it would all depend on what your playstyle is. One of the nice things about EQ2 is that the game is very well balanced and any class can solo. In addition, all classes are useful and are welcome in groups and raids.

Now, I know that EVERY game says that but here in EQ2 it REALLY is true!!!

The character classes in EQ2 are based around the holy trinity of tank / DPS / healer but since there are well over a dozen classes, your preferred role and playstyle will go a long way towards narrowing down the possibilities.

Bottom line here is that I haven't helped you much as far as answering your questions but before we can, we'll need a little more info...

Thanks for the reply, I plan to start with the F2P and was thinking if I really got into things that I would go-ahead and get a sub, is that possible? So I suppose I would have to start on a F2P server.

I started the full download, so I guess I am boned there. Oh well I will just have to wait for the download, which is taking awhile on my net.

Regarding classes, I am always partial to anything DPS related, never can get into tanking or healing. And if all classes can solo, then that just makes my day.

All info is helpful, thanks!

Fortunately for you, there are lots of choices in DPS!

If you like to work up close and personal and melee damage is your thing, an assassin might be just the thing for you. (evil races only)
If you prefer ranged damage, rangers in EQ2 are the kings of high level damage at a distance. (good races only)
If you want to stand at the back of the group and rain down hellfire, a wizard (good) or warlock (evil) is probably your best bet.
And if you like the pet classes as well as blowing stuff up then a conjurer (good) or necromancer (evil) is what you want.

And the best news is that any of the six classes listed above would make an outstanding solo character.

Swashbuckler! They make your world go 'round.

I may be a bit biased, though. Smiley: grin

Please note that some of the alignment(race)/class combos have recently changed.

For instance, one can now be a Dark Elf Ranger, or a Fae Assassin.

The only classes that are truly alignment restricted now are the Paladin and Conjuror (Good) and the Shadowknight and Necromancer (Evil).

I do wonder, however, that say... when a Wood Elf Ranger betrays to Neriak for example, does he remain a Ranger or does he convert to an Assassin taking the new alignment/class changes into account.

Don't forget about Swashbuckler (good) and Brigand (evil), as well as Mystic (good) and Defiler (evil). Smiley: nod http://eq2.zam.com/wiki/Category:EQ2_Subclasses

The ranger would have the choice since they're neutral now.. they could either speak to the ranger trainer and stay a ranger, or speak to the assassin one to change to that.

Interestingly enough...my inquisitor cast "Detect Good" on our guild's Paladin this week...and the result was "You do not detect any good in XXXname" hehe....so Paladins being good is now up for debate as well. I screenshotted the result for posterity.

Hehe...I thought so. It was one of those moments where you do something silly...then stare at the screen blankly in pure confusion for a few seconds...then begin to laugh :D
