I'm trying to clean up some hard drive space (60gb left on a 200 gb HD just isn't making me feel good). So I'm looking at my installed program list and I notice that there are two EQ2 files, both taking 9.93 GB but one is simply "Everquest II" and the other is "Everquest II: Rise of Kunark".

Think I can safely uninstall the first one?

1st thing you're gonna need to do is open up a couple of explorer windows and navigate to the two folders. Then start doing a visual compare of the files you see inside. look at the file names and the incept dates. if they match you can probably delete the smaller set. If they don't match, you can still probably delete the older set (if it is also the smaller set)

BUT DON"T DELETE ANYTHING JUST YET!!!

First re-label the ROOT folder (I usually use something like *old_origianlName* or *bad_originalName* then try and start EQ2 with only the remaining folder. If you picked the "wrong" one, you won't be able to log on. If you can't log on, change the folder name back and relabel the other one then try to log on again.

If you can log on, you can feel pretty safe that you didn't need whatever folder (and the nested folders & files within) you renamed.

If you want to be REALLY careful, you can let things run for a few days after changing the name just to make sure you don't need anything in there. And if you want to be really really careful, just burn the contents to DVD (as data) before you blow it away! (a couple DVDRs should set you back less than half a buck... well worth the investment considering the hours it takes to download the material again!

BTW - before you do blow anything away, take a quick look for screen caps and anything else you might want to salvage from the old folders.

One last thing, my usual rule of thumb on "empty drive space before panic" is 10 - 20%. On a 200GB drive that would be 20 - 40GB so you still have a little breathing room...

I've actually been trying that, but in C:\Program Files\Sony\EQ2 (this one has the *.exe file and the ones I know for sure are for the game), and C:\Program Files\Sony\Station\LaunchPad\EQ2 which is nowhere near a 9 GB file (a little over 1 mb). I have searched every directory though and I can't find another copy of it.

If I felt like sitting here for 10 hours honestly I would just uninstall them both and run the SF disc.

ETA:

Well I took a chance and did delete the single "EQ2" application. Other than also removing the EQ2.exe from my main folder, there was no issue. I simply copied the exe from the test folder and placed it back... It booted no problem. UI and all things are intact.

I also think it was a registry error or something because I didn't gain 9gb, instead I gained about 3. Maybe I should defrag.

I'm replying to your post, although I'm not smart. And since I'm not smart, I'm also adding nothing to the conversation.

Smiley: tongue Oh you...

Anyway a small update, after running defrag and returning home (had a small emergency that actually took me away from the pc for 10 hours, I know it's inhumane), I now have 97 GB free space! And my EQ2 still works!

Of course it helps that a few days ago I erased all of my mp3's and have started burning some of them back to my 'puter.

OK, it's the 21st century! You really need to consider using your C drive ONLY for applications and getting a separate data drive for things like videos, MP3s and photos. External USB drives are cheap and an internal D drive is even cheaper!

Seriously, a 500GB or 1TB data drive will go a long way towards relieving the congestion on your C drive. And as a bonus, your data will be protected if something unforseen happens to your system (like you get a virus on your C drive).

As an additional bonus, when you eventually upgrade and buy a new computer, (and we all do!) you just unplug the data drive, plug it into the new computer and WHOOSH! all your data has been migrated to the new machine!

Personally, I store all of my data on a pair of 2TB raids (one for video and the other for audio and photographs) but I'm a data hog!
