hail fellow players,

i have just started the trial after many years on eq1 finally felt the urge to move over to here. i will be playing either solo or with my 2 eq1 friends who will play a pally and a rogue of some sort. i wanted something to work nicely with those 2 classes and was thinking of maybe the mystic/fury/warden, we will all want to be good classes just for fluff and i would like to be able to heal but also melee a little when im solo,im not a fan of kiting i like to get stuck in.

Any of those classes would work. Wardens have very good melee if you choose the AA points to support it. Inquisitor would also work well.

hmm i was leaning to mystic but having looked at the warden they look great, although i love the look of chain armour and a spear the warden seems to be able to take a more melee approach than the mystic. would you say thats right? like the idea of a warden using sword and board too, much better than limited to maces and scimitars like eq1

I haven't played shaman classes very much, so maybe someone else can chime in. I know defilers can melee pretty well, and they get a neat ghost wolf pet, so there's that.

I just like wardens, myself. Throw a heal over time on the tank and wade in there. Smiley: smile

Not even a Chinese plat farmer could pay me enough to make me ever give up my warden!

When it comes to tactics and strategies, I can root & nuke or wade in and melee. And when I'm bored or overly cautious, I can charm a beastie and send them in to do the dirty work for me! Multiple linked mobs are never an issue. Even with three mobs you just root one, snare the next and carve up the third!

I have a mystic and he's fun to play but kind of a one trick pony. (lure the mob in, send in the pet and melee till the mob dies). The difference in damage taken between the two is negligible and the warden is such a good healer that I rarely fail to keep myself standing!

On top of all that, druid ring travel, the healing tree & the dog pack and the evac spell all help make the class a blast to play!

The only problem I can see here is you said you wanted to "heal but also melee a little". See, the problem is that wardens do way too much damage to call it "a little melee"!!!

Besides, if you really want the chain mail look, I'm sure you can find some appearance only (non-stat) chain gear that a druid would be allowed to wear.

Have you seen the new graphic for the Fury aoe fire spell? I bet that would make you jealous.

All I can say about Druids, whether it be Warden or Fury is they have amazing spell crit, which makes them very good at being a healing wizard.

I have pretty much every healer class covered as alts, in the 2 accounts I run, and the Defiler and Mystic are the most difficult to solo with. It's fine if you are going to be running with friends all the time in the game. But until you gain enuf AA to actually start doing some decent damage the Defiler and Mystic sort of blow compared to other classes in DPS and soloing.

Inquis rocks in the battle cleric mode, and is a fairly strong healer. Does good DPS too! The plate armor adds to survivability also. They solo well, and add some nice buffs to groups.

Templar is even better healer IMO, but man is painful as all get out to try to solo. Fantastic main tank healers endgame, for raiding. So keep that in mind.

Fury rocks, and is sort of like a Wizzy in leather. Does great DPS, but heals a little less I'd say than a Warden.

Wardens surprisingly to me are pretty much one of the best at everything it seems. I've seen some crazy DPS come out of Wardens that are specced right, and have good gear. I know of one Warden who can solo all but the final boss in the Eurodite Library, which is nuts.

It all comes down to what you enjoy playing. Each of these classes are important, and can be fun. Some have more limitations than others, but offer important buffs, and abilities to groups. Typically the classes that are the hardest to solo, you see the least of in end game. Makes sense don't it? The harder the class is to level, the less of the level 90 ones you see running around. And we all want to play a class that is wanted and needed don't we?

Have fun, enjoy the game. Make some alts, and see which class suits you best. Before long the class YOU want to play will become obvious.

Welcome to EQ2! I hope you enjoy yourself.

Good point, if you're pretty sure you'll always have a leveling partner you might want to consider a templar. They're the best end-game healers and buffers, always in demand.

my 2 friends have started and they have taken a pally and a dirge, i am leaning more to warden than mystic at the minute, prefer the elem style spells to the desease and poison ones. i havent really looked at the templar are thyey able to melee or are they more like the clerics of eq1 as i envisage them?

other thing completely off topic is i will be starting a toon to solo when my mates arent around, on eq1 i have a chanter and love him was thinking maybe an illy on here for similar style although im not sure they be any good for soloing. im wanting a challenge but dont want to get to a stage where i cant get any real xp. do they use charm to kill mobs like a chanter or do they do something else?

many thanks for all your help

Templars have some melee ability. I play one and even I will agree that an Inquis Shaman or Warden do more dps though. We have good debuffs though, and if we go the original STR line for our class we can hit very hard.

On Illy's..., they get a pet (a mirror copy of themselves), and are not at all difficult to solo effectively. The evil counterpart (Coercer) is the one that gets the charm ability and their first pet (a copy of whatever they target) at around 65 or so. On their own or in a group they are both widely wanted for power regen, dps buffs, hate transfers, and not to mention mez (oh and the sheer spell casting they have is astonishing).

Illusionists have a pet. They are pretty fun, but not very much like EQ enchanters - more like EQ mages, really, very similar to conjurors except with a short-term mez. They do get some mana replenishment.

Coercers use charm, so if you liked charm kiting they're closer to that play style.

Necros are very like EQ necros. Still overpowered, still have a feign death spell, still use a pet and fear (although fear breaks on any damage, be warned).

Edit: damn you, Dya. /shakefist

A friend of mine has a high level temp for a main and every now and then I'll see him out soloing. I always ask him what his strategy is for killing mobs to which he replies:

"Templars don't kill mobs, they engage the mob in melee and then wait for the mob to die of boredom"!

ok i went with warden and he is coming along nicely, a little too nicely infact i am outleveling the friends i play with. because of this i have decided to start a toon to use when they arent online and save the warden for the group. i am now back where i started last week with the whole what class dilemma. i was thinking i might lvl a tank for if i ever get into the raid scene. i would prefer either a zerker or a guardian so really just wanting any advice on these two classes. i have read the class forums but every class other than sk seems to be unhappy on there so im hoping its just the ussual QQ.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Don't worry about out-leveling them! You can mentor down to any other character, matching your level to theirs.

ahh yes i'd forgotten you could do that, will still start a tank just cos i enjoy tanking and will be a nice change of style from the warden. just trying to decide between guard and zerker really not keen on monks and dont want a knight. can a guardian specialise in shield attacks quite like the idea of my warrior been a shield specialist.

If you find you are levelling up too quickly - very easily done at lower levels, remember you can adjust the slider on your AA page to divert a proportion of your adventure xp into AAs instead. You'll take longer to level, so will be able to complete quests before they grey out; and accumulate a good hunk of AA xp into the bargain.

Edit: I've not played a guardian, but a zerker is a blast if you like to wade into the middle of a mob and start swinging.

Edit #2: The zerker is good with a shield - and has a shield-related 'Reversal' AA line. I've only recently dropped my axe/tower shield to use some rather nice HQ rewards. Zerkers can also dual-wield if that takes your fancy. Oh, and they are good with a bow too.

For what it's worth, I rarely see guardians. Berzerkers seem to be the tank of choice.

You may want to try a shadow knight at some point just for plate+AOE ownage. They are so much fun.

If you want to stay the same level as your friends and see outleveling them as a problem you can always level lock for a little while gaining straight AA instead of XP. To do this you simply hit the L button in game, and slide the little slider at the top of the window all the way to the right (100%) and that will make all the XP you gain go into AA instead. In fact it's not a bad idea to do this anyways at a lower level as we tend to level too fast these days since they changed the amount of XP needed per level a year or so ago. And it's easier to gain AA at a lower level than it is at a higher one.

Mentoring them as suggested above is also a good option.
