A few questions from a newcomerFollow

#1 Apr 29 2010 at 4:07 PM Rating: Decent
I just dived into the free trial, and I have decided to upgrade and start playing less casually. I have a few concerns though.

With the last MMO I played, I chose a hybrid class as my main. It was fantastic while leveling, but as soon as I got to end game content I realized what the "master of none" part of jack of all trades really meant. In the end I had to decide to pick 1 type of progression (healing vs damage dealing) and even then I did not have as much potential as "pure" classes.

Is it this way in EQ2 as well? What are the best "Pure" classes, or atleast classes that are sought after end game?

What were you playing, DDO?

Here there are some sacrifices made for choosing a hybrid but they are minor at worst. You will always be able to solo and I don't think you can find a class that is out & out neglected by groups or raids.

Depending on who you talk to, some healing classes may be more or less in demand than others but in an end-game raid, most MT groups consist of tank & three healers (one of each type) so no matter which type of healer you pick there should always be at least one raid slot for your class.

If you are a tank/XXX hybrid, you will almost always be tanking. You may struggle to find a spot since there are a lot of pure tanks. Shadowknights are one of the most played classes due to their fun factor, so pure tanks are usually aplenty.

If you are a pure healer or a heal/XXX hybrid, you will always be healing. You will never struggle to find a spot. Most healers also have buffs or debuffs, but, while nice, aren't really what get them into groups.

The dps is then broken down even more. These are ranked (roughly) by current ranking in endgame dps:
1) Top-tier Pure DPS (Wizard, Assassin)
2) Bottom-tier Pure DPS (Warlock, Berserker, Ranger, Necromancer, Conjurer)
3) Melee Buffer/Debuffer (Swashbuckler, Brigand)
Caster Buffer/Debuffer (Coercer, Illusionist)
4) Melee Buffer (Dirge)
Caster Buffer (Troubadour)

Some of the buffer/debuffer classes (I'm lookin at you bards!) are really hard to level. Their buffs and debuffs are really tops and they will always get into groups easily, but good luck getting quests done due to their low killing speed. Buffers and debuffers are usually sparse in raids, but that depends on if they are used more for their group buffs or if they are used for raid buffs. Obviously, depending on the patch, group 1 and 2 mix up some. This is the current state, however. These can also vary some based on group composition, too.

Yeah, my dirge is on hold at 63 while I wait for a friend to catch up to her. It's pretty slow going solo. Can be done, but slooooow.

Classes that level easily and will be appreciated later: warden, inquisitor, probably fury.

Classes that level *very* easily and probably will never be wanted: monk, shadowknight.

I can confirm that Monk's are not all that high in demand, it's unfortunate as the class is very fun to play and solos quite well, but I have never really seen a large demand for monks in groups. Sure, they definitely add to a group and can tank if needed (not really raids though, and some instances with a very good healer) but I've just never seen tells by people specifically asking for a monk.

Still, they are truly fun to play, the invis and feign death abilities really allow you to go places those without will not get without greying out a zone. (or group, naturally)

On the other hand, I have raided with my monk (for the mythical weapon, truly an experience, I was dead weight mostly though, not really equipped for really making a difference in a raid) and have grouped a fair amount of time too lately. Good gear and a good understanding of the class is vital. You can be the most desired class, if you don't play well or don't invest in equipment and spells, you will not be asked much again. Ofcourse, the dilemma is that you need to group and raid to get the very good equipment. (SOE has done fairly well with the shard armour, which is a very great boost, you start with the first tier that you can get solo, it just takes too long imo lol)

My ratsassin begs to differ.

Iksars should be wizards, clearly.

Everyone knows Iksars should be Necromancers.

So should Elves, Trolls, Fae/Arasai, Gnomes, Dark Elves, Kerra...but not Ratonga. They breed too fast to appreciate death.

also, Sam your avatar is pure LOL.

I prefer "un-dead" thank you. At least my pets are anyway.

I also have THE AWESOMEST frog monk, ever.

Anyone who hasn't created a frog monk needs to do so right away. The animations will make you laugh yourself silly. Sillier.

Especially the Barney Fife fun spell animation she got at level 20. Oh, oh dear.

Dunno, my monk is in decent demand.

I was an OT/DPS in my old guild, and I would parse pretty well, aswell as be able to pull mobs. I'm also often found tanking some of the older raid zones and I'm very happy tanking anything easy to medium SF, or Easy to Hard TSO.

Monks are a fun hybrid class. We can DPS well, solo most stuff (I'm spending most of my time mentored killing orange ^^^ and green X2 for AA), and if you learn the in and outs of monkhood, you can tank pretty well.

If any one wants some help on monk hood, hit me up on Unrest, I'll give you some advice.

It really depends what you want to do end-game, raid or just play casually. But, if you are good at your class any class can be great.

Fighters:
Brawlers (monks and bruisers) can be difficult for grouping / raiding because people don't like them as much as the other tanks. It is all subjective though, my raid guild uses a Bruiser for an off-tank, but that isn't so common. Crusaders (Paladin and Shadowknight) are great for grouping, both have lots of AOE and can kill group content fast. Zerkers are good too, just not as common and thier dps isn't great really. The flavor of the month is def an SK.

Scouts:
Bards (Dirge and Troubadour) are always useful, people love them for their utility. Grouping and raiding. Rogues (Swashbuckler and Brigand) are good dps with some debuff utility. Predators (Assassin and Ranger) there is a bias toward Assassins, they are one of the top dps classes, Rangers are not as good right now (on pvp they are great - or for the new Battlegrounds)

Mages:
Sorcerers (Wizard and Warlock) are awesome dps and should have no problem grouping /raiding. Enchanters (Illusionist and Coercer) usefulness has dropped for these two, and their dps got nerfed a lot too. Great for mana regen and buffs not as many needed on raids now (used to need 4 for 24 man raid). Summoners (Conjuror and Necromancer) both got a bump this exp pack and Conjuror seems to be doing very well dps-wise. A good Necro can bring in the numbers too.

Healers:
Grouping it really doesn't matter what you choose although Templars may be the best "heroic group" content healer. Wardens are great healers too.
For Raiding, wards are king so Shamans (Mystic and Defiler) do very well and are needed a lot. Templars are needed and probably one Inquisitor for great dps buffs and lot of cure capability. Druids (Warden and Fury) are needed but the way heals stack (Wards, Reactives, Regens) makes a lot of Druid heals go wasted and they don't buff as well as some of the other healing classes.

After saying all that. Play what you like because if you are good you will get groups and find a good guild, that is the most important. There aren't TONS of people leveling up right now. People that have 90's powerlevel their alts by mentoring them with their main and don't need to group up much. So don't get frustrated leveling and at least soloing is possible. Go to all available dungeons as you level to get discovery exp/aa.

Fish types (like everything else) change every tier so once you get up beyond level 10 you'll never have catch another frog leg. Increasing your skill level (in fishing) would make it more likely that you would catch 3, 5 or even 10 frog legs with a single cast of the rod. And no, just catching them doesn't make you a cannibal. Eating them would make you a cannibal but catching them just makes you a homicidal sociopath.
