So I have been browsing these forums because I am bored of WoW and it caused me (/passblame) to buy Everquest 2. Hey for 14$ I got the original game and 4 expansions AND a month. Couldn't pass it up.

Anyways, this is not my first time playing an EQ game. However, considering the last time I played EQ2 was back when you started with one of the 4 "General" Classes things have changed.....DRASTICALLY! I just got my Sarnack (sp?) Necro to 20 and quests just...ended. I eventually floated over to Butcher Block mountains and found some but it isn't as smooth as WoW. So long story short what advise do any of you have for me?

I feel like an old man going back to college after dropping out after a semester in my early 20's....Lost.

P.S. Ranger or Assassin? I Like sneaky sneaky and caster doesn't seem to be for me. I know its about what I find fun but I only see a ranger as a Pro Assassin. Ranged AND Melee. I'm assuming im wrong and would like to have some facts to defend Mr. Assassin.....Don't want him mad at me...

Let's see. As I recall you could to the Butcherblock quests or head to Thundering Steppes or Nektulos Forest at that phase.

If by "as smooth" you mean the game doesn't hold your hand and spoon feed you directions on where you should go next then no it isn't as smooth. On the other hand there is a lot to be said for free choice and direction from within not to mention playing with adults in an adult game.

At level 20 you have several choices including Thundering Steppes (and the Splitpaw dungeon), Nek Forest & Butcherblock Mountains.

Don't worry though, once you can shake off the WOW mindset and learn to think for yourself again you should do just fine... :-)

I understand the whole spoon fed concept. Hence why I left WoW. But WoW has several quests from the same Hub that will say "Go help so and so at such and such" for several different zones at once that you could chose to go to.

The new starting zones in EQ2 seemed to be doing this but at level 20 it was kind of like " Cool you defeated these bird people!" and thats about it. I guess it isn't that big of a deal as I am thoroughly enjoying myself. Off to go level my Ranger to experience the Wood Elf city and the good alignment and see which is better for me.

You might have just missed it, but there's a quest in Timorous Deep that says "hop on the griffon and go to Butcherblock" so yeah, EQ2 generally does that too. Anyway, yeah, you're on the right track. You should be in Butcherblock now. There are quest givers on the dock, some in the middle of the zone (bunch of dwarves) and some by the zone to Greater Faydark.

I didn't think of it at the time but there is almost always another option available to you...

Unlike WoW, asking a question like "where should I hunt at lvl XX" in the various chat channels (especially the dedicated levels channel) will most likely result in one or more polite responses as opposed to being told "dood UR so lame"!

Having come from WoW you are probably pre-conditioned against asking for help in chat (much like being a visitor to New York during the 70s... "Can you tell me the way to the Empire State Building or shall I just go ***** myself?") Here in EQ2, you will run into an occasional malignant child but most of the time chat is filled with helpful, friendly adults.

Also, FWIW, the reason the starting area you chose (actually you picked the race and the game picked the zone but I digress) is that from where you were, there is really no contiguous zone that you could shift to. Since that area was added in an expansion and was not in the core game it is kind of an island once you complete the levels that it offers.

Faydwer (where you are now) is also an expansion but was designed as a level 0 through level 70 experience so you should find it a more complete or at least a longer smooth flow.

In any case welcome back to EQ2 and sorry if I seemed snippish before...

Alright thanks. I was hoping I had just missed it. And ya you are right at me being pre-conditioned to crappy WoW players. I actually have noticed that the 1-9 chat channel is pretty friendly on my server.

I have one of each at low (30s) level. They're both a ton of fun, actually. However, if it matters to you, I understand that in the end game assassins are much preferred at the moment.

Who knows, though? The nerf bat is a fickle mistress.

Butcherblock is a bit lower than Nek or Thundering Steppes, so a good move to go there in between. There are quests on both sides of the zone - the docks and over by Greater Faydark as well, so be sure to pick up both.

I'm a big fan of the Butcherblock quest series. The quests range all the way from about level 20 through level 32ish, and you get a legendary charm for completing the major quest line.

As for Assassin vs. Ranger, I'm not sure as I've played neither personally. From all I've heard, Rangers are more potent in Overlands zones, and Assassins in dungeon zones. I know that my husband's Ranger tanks like a wet paper bag though! ;)

Rangers are indeed the quintessential "tissue paper tank" (blame it on the armor) but in all fairness, they're not tanks... they're DPSers and at that they excel.

Now way back when dirt & I were both young, one of the original regular posters to this board (Bodhisatva) crunched the damage output numbers between ranger & assassin and came to the conclusion that assassins do more damage over all. At which point he promptly betrayed his fully tricked out level-capped ranger to begin again as an assassin. And just to impress upon you how serious this decision was, it was back in the day when there was still a complete separation between good and evil... you couldn't mail anything to the other side and there were no shared bank vault slots! In spite of this and along with having to re-gear his toon and completely re-purchase all his spells (which, irrc, were all or almost all AD3s & masters) he was happy with the result and reported here that he parsed higher during raids and that his guildies were generally happier with his performance then they had been when he was a ranger.

Personally, I've always been happy with my ranger especially since I prefer to stand back away from the front line and pew-pew the bad guys from a distance. But to each his own... if you wanna min-max things -OR- if you'd rather stand right next to the boss mob and deliver a dagger up the strap then assassin is the right choice for you.
