As a new player, is there any general tips you wish you knew from the start? Even just useful keyboard shortcuts or anything general. I don't want to know what race or class or any of that, just things to make my life a little easier in the long run. Maybe a "this class is bugged and close to useless so don't pick it" though if it is the case :P.

I don't think there are bugged classes, you can try out all combinations and see what you prefer to play.

As for tips to begin: might be more interesting to start in the newer areas: Faydwer (good side), Gorowyn or Neriak (both evil).

Don't worry too much for money and spells at the beginning.

Up to lvl 50, you get a free version of your spells and abilities, it is also the weakest version (apprentice I). You can get better versions either from buying them from other players or from your class trainer. Problem would be that buying them from other players is very expensive for a new player, you don't really have to do this before you're level 15 or so anyway, you get those levels fast enough and it is unlikely you'll get enough money at that level.

You do quests and receive money and armour and weapons for it, definitely follow the questlines and do not start just killing mobs to just level up. You'll need those rewards at the start, very useful.

Walking around, you will see shinies, little objects of light on the ground which you can harvest (with a question mark above it), those start collection quests (when harvested, you examine them) and should always be harvested if possible. You can turn in collections and get good rewards for them, but do not do this before you are level 10! (I mean turning them in, not harvesting them, you'll see that there's an AA system ingame, which starts at 10, the collections are lvl 10 and will help to gain AA only if you turn them in at lvl 10, not before)

Always try to sell the double collection items to other players through the broker system, it's a very good way of income. That and spells that drop.

Just a few tips, as for keyboard shortcuts, I don't know all that many to be honest.

Forgot to say, guilds are almost a necessity. Good guilds will help you out questwise and also armour and weaponwise.
Most guilds have a lot of crafters who will help you out at a much lower cost than buying the items on the broker.

Ziev comes across with some good tips, but you now get spells per level over 50 also, not just up to 50 anymore.

Buy bags! Player made bags are for sale on the broker, you'll probably want to start with something cheap (12 slot bags, 10% reduction). Buy extra. You can put them in your bank for more space, and in your broker so you can sell more items. Also even buying a cheap apartment (5silver a week rent) will give you another broker spot to start helping you make some money. Boxes will be better then bags for your bank/broker since they weigh more and you wouldnt want to carry them around, unless you have a good amount of strength.

Hotkeys are your friend. You can either hit O and select "Macro" tab and make them, or you can right click on a spell and make a hotkey (so you can add text, heroic opp, or chain another spell with it).

"I want to be a unicorn!"
"Awww, why's that?"........
"So I can stab people with my face."

All the classes are versatile and quite good when you learn how to play them correctly. That's why its always advisable to play a class to about level 20 or 30 before giving up on it cause that's when most classes start to shine.

Pick a class that appeals to you. Pick several. There are 7 character slots per server with a standard subscription. Just through normal game play you'll wind up playing the one you like the most.

Ignore the negative posts on the official forums. Many people think their class sucks and everyone else's is better. That's usually because the classes are pretty even in the overall picture of things. And, the people who want to be the "Best" can't be.. so they vocalize it. ;)

Heh, despite having played the game since it began, I've only once played a character past lvl 50. Odd really, but I just never could stick with an alt long enough.

As for that appartment, you get one for no purchase cost, it's part of a quest (designed for new players to get used to everything in it, also freely giving market access through one item you get, amongst other items) and indeed only costs 5 silver a week, which is really nothing.

As for being able to carry a lot of weight along with you, my 80 Monk can carry about 4k worth of stuff. Granted, as a fighter my strength is nicely buffed, but I doubt a healer type can carry all that less. (although I have to be honest and say I don't know for sure)

One of the most useful keys is 'F' which means do the default thing to whatever the mouse is pointing at i.e. attack a mob, open a door, harvest a node, speak to a quest giver, etc. It's much quicker than double-clicking or right-clicking & selecting the action. Just note that the first example I gave you was 'attack a mob', and they tend to hit you back - your cursor should show as crossed swords if 'attack' is the default action
