I am considering trying the trial for EQ2. I am uncertain about it, as I am not familiar w/ mmorpg's, and I am really more an Elder Scrolls single-player type. Also, I am not wild about having to pay every month for a game in which I have already paid for. Another thing is though I have registered for their official forums, there is no way for me to post messages and I am forbidden to send & receive pm's. Any ideas to help this poor n00b out? Thanks.

To answer your question about not being able to post on the officail forums...you can't do that until you register an actual EQ2 game, which means actually buying one...sucks I know :( If you were planning on this being your first MMO, you might want to consider playing WoW first. I played WoW for a year and a half, and I find it more noob friendly then EQ2. It is easier to level, the crafting interface is easier, and dungeons (at low levels that is) are less time intensive. That being said, I find EQ2 very fun, and am glad I tried it. There are more choices for race and classes (24 EQ2 classes, 9 for WoW) and the story line is more there. By that I mean that EQ2 quests all contribute to the lore, and you can really define yourself as good or evil. That brings up the point that WoW really has no "sides." There is the Alliance and the Horde, but they are not necesarily good vs. evil. I hope this info helps, and leep asking questions! Also, check out the sticky above for more new player info.

P.S. You might also want to consider LOTRO for a first MMO

Thanks very much, Atrum! Anyway, I think I like eq2 better BECAUSE you can align yourself w/ being good or bad. Also, I heard the other way around that the EQ2 community is more friendly than WoW's community. I know someone who plays WoW and swears by it, but I like the alignment feature of the EQ story. I want to control a BAD girl char! That's fun!

You are quite right, many people in the WoW community are quite nasty, especially at high levels, but this may be said for many MMO's. From what I have observed people seem friendly enough in EQ2, but that does not mean there are not jerks hanging around. I also think EQ2 but have a better community beacuse they make being in guilds more fun and involving by having guild status levels. Also, I see that you would like to align yourself with evil...there is a new expansion coming out in Nov. that will add a new evil race and raise level cap to 80.

A new expansion for a bad race in November, where, in WoW? Also, how the heck to you enable e-mail notification of replies on this board?

I recently came to EQ2 from Wow ( and LOTR and EQ1 ect..) and I would say go for the trial. Maturity wise the folk in EQ2 so far are a lot more mature and helpful than in Wow.

At a low level I haven't had any issues finding a group or help if I got stuck on something. I would suggest that you try a few different classes and races in the trial and get a feel for the game. There is more to EQ2 than to WoW but learing it is most of the fun. WoW is kinda like a MMorg lite.

The expansion will be for EQ2...go to main website and click on the Rise of Kunark thing on the left...it is a picture. To enable email notification for a private message, sign in, then select My Profile...scroll down and it will be on of the options...I do not think you can do the same for a notification for replies to a thread.

Hmm, frustrating, I don't have options on my profile! I don't even have access to post an avatar! Frustrating! What does one do in that situation?

Do you have a game registered with a paid subscription active? If not, I do not think you will be able to have access features. Only advice I can offer is activate your account if you do not currently have one.

No, I don't have the game yet. I am considering it. I don't even know if I will get it.

I would suggest downloading and installing the trial, its free and gives you a couple weeks to explore. In stand alone solo player games, you get all your content on the game disk. MMO's are different in that you get a game client and then the client launches an automatic patching program that downloads all the most up-to-date game files (no game disk required). So if you want to try out EQ2, download the client and then run it just before you goto bed and let it download the game files overnight (~8-12hrs on DSL).

To continue playing you will need to purchase the actual game and activate the unique acccount ID (never buy a used MMO disk, those account IDs have already been activated!). I think Sony offers all the expansions online in 1 package or you can buy Echos of Faydwer (EOF) in a store (it should include all the previous expansions, which you will want eventually).

If you have any questions about gameplay you can post them on the forums here or you can ask the in-game community by typing /1 before your question in the chat bar. /1 should bring up the lvl 1-10 chat channel.

I have to say I found WOW more difficult to get into then EQ2. However this is coming from somebody who played eq1 for years before eq2 so that is probably why. Eq1 and eq2 have alot of similar chat commands etc making it easier to get into.

My biggest problem with WOW was the other players. Getting pick up groups for basic grouping isn't usually too difficult in eq2 as where with WOW I never did get into a pick up group. People who play wow seem to be alot pickier about who they group with which I find odd since getting killed in WOW is less dramatic then eq2.

Far as the monthly fee goes it does suck, however I have found when I get into a MMORPG I spend alot less money buying new games at 50 and 60 bucks a pop. I mean on average a new game, assuming I even like it, provides about 20 to 30 hours of gameplay normally. There are a few exceptions such as Oblivion for instance, but most games seem that way. Just about all MMORPG games have a monthly fee of $15 bucks a month. The few that don't are generally pretty limited I have found (or are full of cheaters).

The reason you can't send messages probably has to do with Spammers. I guess they figure most gold spammers won't go out and buy a account just to advertise as where its easy for them to make up free e-mail and get into a free trial.

He meant EQ2, I'm sure, but the Sarnaks are, I've heard, neutral rather than evil.

I've never had a problem getting answers from people in-game. If PvP interests you, you might want to start a character on PvE first so you can learn the ropes first.
The PvP community can be a little more "WOWish" at times.

Thanks, it sounds like I might be happier in pve than pvp. In pve, you can do the quests, right?

Yes, in PvE you can do the quests. Since you are newish to MMO's I would suggest a character class that is better at soloing, such as a monk/bruiser or a conjurer/necromancer.

Thanks. With the trial, I can start out doing the "Outpost of the Overlord" quests, right? Or is the trial limited that I can't?

You sure can. Just start your character in Freeport.

I just wish I could get around the stupid paying every month for something I already pay for when I buy it, though!

If you only want to pay once, buy a console game with a finite ending.

Its understandable to have reservations about the monthly fee, but you are still thinking about it from a consol gaming background. If you still like the game when the trial period is over, buy the full version of the game. I guarantee that after the 1st month you will have a different perspective on the monthly fee. Especially if you think about all the benefits of a pay to play (p2p) mmo; such as in-game support from gm's if you have any problems, stable servers to play on, and a constantly evolving game with new content added and fun gm-sponsored events (especially around the holidays). Theres plenty more benefits to p2p mmo's, but that should give you a general idea of what you are paying for.
