From looking at the information on EQ 2 site, it looks like bruisers are more weapons oriented, while monks are unarmed. Does that mean that bruisers are not good with their fists at all?

Everything I have read on this topic is that neither actually uses fists. Unlike EQL monks, fists (in themselves) will not be 'decent' weapons. Unarmed combat skill will refer to the use to use 'fist' weaspons, like brass knuckles, Cestuses (Cestai???), etc... They (both Bruiser classes) will also be able to use 1 and 2 handed blunts.
