A Geforce 5700 256MB card can be had for right around 100 bucks and would do ok...

The best would be a 6800 Ultra of course....

You didn't say whether that that's an AMD chip or Intel, and if it's an intel, what line of processor.

All that said, I think it's silly to spend $400.00 for a video card in EQ or EQ2. The top end cards lose their value very quickly, and by the time you need the speed it offers, you can buy another card (likely faster than the $400.00 card) for half the price.

I'd either get a $200.00 nvidia (6600 gt, I think) or wait until the ATI X700XT (not the 256mb Pro) finally hits the streets. I suspect the X700 is better for games like EQ/EQ2 that use DirectX, but the 6600 gt is available.

That said, if you don't have PCI Express, neither is an option right now.

I can't imagine that nVidia won't release the 6600GT in AGP format. It certainly looks like the value buy if you don't want to shell out for the 6800 series. I'm going to wait a few months and see if it gets released before I make an upgrade decision.

Both cards will be released (eventually) in an AGP flavor. It's just that you'll have to wait a few months for them. Due to chip availability they're being limited to the PCI-e versions right now.

what's your budget?? it's easier to find a card once you define your max numbers you can afford?

OS is windows XP with a Intel P4. DDR

If that helps great also wanna spend around $100.00 .

Just need the basic right now to run EQ2 since geforce2 32 meg dont cut it for EQ2. Even for EQ it is low. lol

Thanks for responses so far.

Also would a ATI Radeon 9000 do the job friend selling one for $50.00?????

erialstarchaser,

I can speak from personal experience that an ATI Radeon 9000 will barely do the job. I would not recommend buying it used from your friend for $50... simply because you can buy a Radeon 9000 PRO online just about anywhere for under $50 (check pricewatch.com or google it)

For the price range you suggest, I would recommend getting a GeForce 5700. They are around $100 and from what I hear give the most bang for the buck in that price range.

If you don't mind shelling out a bit more, you could get your hands on a real marvel of a video card: RADEON 9800 PRO. I highly recommend it. Here's a refurbished one from Crucial for $175

Cards! cards! and more cards! This is the million dollar question! There are quite a few to choose from. There a few sites out there that post bench tests in comparison to thier cost. I have concluded this...

  • while sometimes spending the extra money for a nice high end one....the middle of the road ones work just fine and are reasonably priced better.

  • Buying used....buyer beware! In most cases, your buying someone elses headace. On the flip side...someone bought it and decided they didn't like it and sent it back. In either case it is called refurbished and you got a deal!

  • Technology grows rapidly throughout the year! While it's high end now....next year it's the middle of the road. DON'T TRY AND KEEP UP WITH THE JONES! It's all relative to what out there now.

  • Happy hunting!

I'm new here, but I just thought I'd put my 2cents in.

I have a PowerColor Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb AGP. You can pick them up anywhere on the net for about $130. They've always gotten good reviews on bang for the buck. I used PowerStrip to overclock it to a good mid range and it performs pretty good. I used to run EQ on full settings with no problems. Same with City of Heroes.

I'd love a $400 card too, but prices are getting out of control.

Also, beware of the 9600 Pro EZ that's out there for about $100. You lose 1/2 of the pipelines.

    Just my opinion....

At the bottom of the EverQuest II homesite is a blurb for nVIDIA.

    My experiences in the past:
    I buy a new game.
I buy a new video card.
    Game does not work.
Call the game support, the game is fine your video card is at fault, click.
Call the video card support, the video card is fine the game is at fault, click.

I am stuck looking at websites about a game I would rather be playing. (this was when Asheron's Call first came out years ago)

    Today:

I was very excited that EQ2 had a blurb for nVIDIA, as this raises hope for me that the two are working together and any problems after release will be worked out cooperativly instead of pointing fingers at each other, with me still not playing.

I bought a low end, but supposedly acceptable, nVIDIA 5700 128 RAM for $150.00.

    To beta testers,

I have a GeForce 5200 MX from when I bought my computer. Will that card do, or should I upgrade to a 6800 or a 9800 or x800?

    Specs:
    P4 3Ghz(HT)
    1GB DDR
    GeForce 5200 MX 128MB

um , if you want to get with the newer technology that is amazing. Grab one of the new motherboards from Abit/Asus that has the PCIe slot. With a socket 478 chipset so you can still use your P4..

PCI-express is amazing, I personally plan on getting one. Right now the graphics cards have reached the Max that AGP can handle, the front side bus on regular PCI is a ***** but the new PCIe is incredible. It opens up all kinds of new things for graphics cards, just wait until motherboards come equipped with dual PCIe slots .. mmmmm, two graphics cards .. *drools*

I highly doubt the 800xt will be an AGP also.. AGP will limit it ; ).

if you dont like that route.. grab a 5700 or a 9600 256mb for less than 150 bucks.

/edit if youd like to learn more about PCIe check out www.tomshardware.com (great site for reviews)

The 9800 pro 128 megs. is the best deal for the money, if you can still find them. You have to accompany your question with a price range to allow for an educated answer.

The Geforce MX series will not work for everquest 2. I recommend the Fx series or above for everquest 2.
