Gear choice is usually pretty straightforward in this game. If it's a higher item level, equip it and ditch the old. However, with the addition of ninja, all the level 110 monk armor just got a huge dex boost. By upgrading to the new 120 gear, it seems you'd be losing a lot of dex for a minor upgrade in other stats. I know the other stats are better for monk, but how much better? Does dex do ANYTHING for monk? Seems like losing 30 some dex to gain 4 strength seems weird. I'm reluctant to spend my precious poetics upgrading the monk if the lower item level stuff with the huge dex boost provides anywhere near the benefit 4 str does.

On the flip side, would nin benefit from the insane STR boost? Should MNK and NIN stay at item level 110? Or are all my thoughts stupid? I'm not good with numbers and such.

I've been hoarding my poetics and don't know whether to spend em on my tank or my mnk dps.

It improves your parry rate. In other words, not really.

Reading tooltips helps. Reading the patch notes if you're interested also helps because it explains, very clearly, what affects what (and even in the in-game help texts bothers to go through this).

STR is WAR, PLD, MNK, DRG. DEX is NIN and BRD.

The opposite stat does absolutely nothing damage wise for the opposing class (i.e. STR on NIN = zilch, DEX on DRG = zilch). The additional affects of parry strength/rate aren't worth even mentioning.

I haven't played for a while but I have a question regarding the addition of Dex to gear usable by MNK and NIN. Is the item budget affected by the additional, presumably unwanted, stat (Dex for Mnk / Str for Nin)? Historically in games with item budgets this would mean the additional stat would come at the expense of something else such as Accuracy or Crit Rate.

No. The item budget wasn't affected by the addition of dex to MNK gear.. they literally just slapped some dex on there for NIN to use.

Yeah this. They literally just added it as STR/DEX adds nothing appreciable to NIN/MNK and it allows people to use gear they already had (which is why Yoshi-P stated a few times to just collect Monk gear in preparation for leveling Ninja). This made it easier on the itemization person (considering they use 4 developers for all boss fights and only one guy for F.A.T.E.s, and even only Blizzard used one person for itemization, I'm fairly confident it's just the one guy/gal) and the rest of us that had things like Infantry, Darklight gear, Allagan gear from BCoB 1/2, etc.

Oh goodness.. just thinking of that poor guy editing all those stats makes me pity him.

Even if he was able to do it via a SQL query or something similar to it, building the query would suuuuuck.
