After hearing a couple reports that people were having issues connecting to the PlayStation Network last night and today, we checked the official PlayStation website, which confirmed that the PSN is having some troubles due to high volume right now and is “intermittently available.”

Here’s Sony’s full statement on the matter:

The PlayStation Network is currently experiencing high volume and users may experience issues when connecting to the service. We will update you with any changes that may occur in regards to this issue. Thank you for your patience.

We’ll keep an eye on this and let you know when things are back to normal.

Are you experiencing problems with the PSN right now?

This is killing me, I decide to drop $40 on the game this week, after paying for Playstation Plus so I can play online and dropping $400 on the PS4, and now they apparently didn't plan on having so many people playing online on their servers when they oversold the crap out of the new platform.... come on man!

That sucks.

I wonder if this is:

A. Due to their networking equipment not being able to handle the load
B. Due to their ISP not being able to handle the load
C. Due to their ISP being capable of handling the load, but throttling them down because freedom.

A is the easiest to fix. B depends on whether the business class ISPs where their data center is have a monopoly. C requires a lot of politicking, lobbying, and whining to the FCC about unfair Net (non) Neutrality practices.

I have yet to purchase PS+ simply because nothing I play or use needs it (definitely a major selling point of FFXIV for PS4). I was pretty annoyed that the PS4 beta of Destiny required a PS+ account to play several of its multi-player features. For a beta. Give me a break.

I'm going with A, either way the majority of players, including myself, are locked out of FFXIV and other games because of PSN.

What's worse is I use my PS3's to watch internet tv on netflix, hbo go, and everything else, and I canceled cable because I'm having DirecTV installed this weekend, so I have no TV to watch either... I'm going crazy now!

They'll probably force it on us for Everquest Next too since it's an SOE game.

Honestly, PSN+ has amazing benefits compared to anything Xbox could do. Aside that I'm betting it's more due to releasing a demo during a gaming expo.

That's odd... I've been playing pretty constantly the last two days and haven't experienced so much as a hitch.

Not saying that it isn't true, just saying that I've not noticed a single problem.

And this is why it sucks to have to go through Third-Party Services to access a game.

Even Steam allows you to Play Offline under many circumstances; there have been times where the Steam service was unavailable and I was still able to launch and play FFXIV.

It is among the many reasons why I'd never touch the newer generation consoles. The last console I ever got was a Wii and the PS2 before it. I have a 360, but I only used it for FFXI back before I got a 2nd computer good enough to run it.

These newer consoles with the _requirement_ that you log onto something like PSN before you can even play your games sounds like far more trouble than it is worth, just to play some games.

Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the people who want to play FFXIV but can't because of PSN being down/intermittent/whatever, but I blame Sony for not allowing it to be available offline. That is why Steam is such a superior service; you can at least play your games even when it is completely offline (and/or you are offline for whatever reason).

Me too. I've never had any issue playing through PSN, let alone the last couple of days.

The Cisco router address table limit that hit this last week might be partly to blame, perhaps? Some "areas" of the internet are more likely to be affected than others, depending on where that older Cisco gear is still in use.

1. Even if you have XIV in Steam, it's not a Steam requiring application. There are a few titles I didn't purchase via Steam, that I still launch with Steam and can obviously launch if the internet goes out.

2. Unless something has changed, you have to tell Steam you will be going off line BEFORE you disconnect from the internet in order to even play your off line games. This can be very inconvenient, but still better than certain services.

Something must have changed, because I lose connection to Steam quite often while playing a game, or even while not playing a game and I can boot up a game just fine.

And even then, I can easily close and re-open steam in Offline Mode and the games will still launch.

As far as Point #1, most games purchased through Steam require Steam to be running, in fact, going to the game's .exe in its own folder will actually launch Steam before the game launches at all. Most games, not all. Some games are sneaky (Warframe does this) and have a secondary .exe sitting in the game's folder that won't launch Steam. But then Warframe is F2P, so that might be an exception.
