Reaching 1.0 playersFollow

#1 Jun 21 2014 at 8:21 PM Rating: Good
I ran a FF panel at Seishun-con in ATL tonight and discovered a handful of 1.0 players who hadn't gotten the memo that 2.0 is actually kind of good.

I think I convinced them both to give it a shot, but that makes me wonder how many others are out there in the same situation.

What do you think SE could do to reach the 1.0 players in a way that would be meaningful? I mean, these folks didn't even know they got to try 2.0 without buying a new client. (One even had the collector's edition....) So clearly, SE dropped the ball someplace.

I think SE has done all they've needed to do to sell ARR. If any 1.0 players haven't checked it out at this point, that's on them.

Honestly give them an honest warning, there a people who played the the game before ARR that can and will not like how the game turned out in ARR. Things have been changed and not all of them were for the better.

SE would be smart to run some television ads (good ones, this time) as the first expansion nears.

I like ARR and I played 1.0 straight through until 2.0 release. I agree there were some things about 1.0 that resonated with me and I wish they had managed to survive. The ideas were good but SE's implementation of them in the game is what drove people away.

Here are just a couple I have mentioned before;
1. Attempted Experience reward system focused on quality of kill vs quantity of kills.
2. Open class system could cross any ability. Others didn't like it because they said there were no unique roles. I loved that I could build my own Dragoon using Lancer abilities mixed with Archer and Gladiator abilities.
3. The tried to make positioning a key part of the battle system. A Lancer was designed to be a mid range specialist damage was increased if he was a half step behind the Gladiator or Marauder. Up close they were rubbish but with a little distance they were a great support DD. Thaumaturge had a conal AoE and Conjurers had a circular AoE. It was useful and important to avoid attacking the wrong monsters.

Etc... If only the execution had been better on 1.0. Curse those who said the game should be released before it was ready.

Except no one did.

EDIT: I do definitely agree, partially, on the limiting aspect of the cross-class with the job system. Right now, it's not an issue. However, a few updates and an expansion down the line with let's say more caster classes have cooldowns the old ones could use? Or a Barrage style cooldown MNK could make use of very easily?

It's possible... but I think SE has done a lot in terms of marketing. Maybe they even sent e-mails out to these people? I know I get e-mails about FFXI still occasionally. Weren't there even commercials on the TV!?

Somehow the message failed to reach them. Not that the remake existed, they all knew that, but that it's actually a solid game now and that many of the issues that plagued 1.0 have been fixed.

I mean, it technically did win Best MMO of 2013 from a few places (not that it had any real competition) and with the OVER TWO MILLION PLAYERS OMG you'd think they would put out another big wave of marketing.

I get notices from both XIV and XI but they go to to my spam box.

Except, you know, Wada admitting this, numerous times and even Yoshi P stating it when he took over. (We are still riding everything Yoshi does and say, right?)

They probably should have sent an email to all registered users on ARR's release stating that the game was updating to 2.0 and that there was another free trial. I'd imagine that would have been the best way for SE to reach out to those who at one point were active in the 1.0 version. I didn't actually check to see if they did this, but they should have. Probably the most common sense thing to do.

Oh ok, you're talking about "1.0 players" as in people who tried the game at launch and still don't want to give it another go

yeah I'm sure there are plenty of people like that, and I don't really blame them. And yes the game has been overhauled completely but there are still head-scratchers from 1.0 like our job system

Google, Bing, or whatever you use, Final Fantasy A Realm Reborn Commercial. It did air at least once on television and I know I saw it on Hulu once or twice.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/zCAqc9J3iZc?autoplay=1

Most of the complaints at the time were that it was lame and that SE could do better.

TV commercials would of helped a ton. I have friends who are what I would consider avid gamers and play quite a bit of different stuff. Issue is, they don't follow what's coming out and when. They show up to their local game store, check out what's available, buy it up and play that. They don't spend their time like I do reading game sites to see what's coming, reviews, etc

It's these people SE probably hasn't reached and probably won't unless they start pumping out the tv ads. I know there's enough people like that, cause at work were quite a few guys who game, I'm the only one who keeps up with the news related to it. Every time I mention X big title is coming out, they're always surprised. Always funny when they call you up too, "Man, have you checked out Uncharted 2? That ****'s amazing!". Yes...I did....2 years ago, when it came out.

Goddamn. Perfect example of a commercial that makes you NOT want to try out the product. Damn, how hard is it just to show some gameplay footage with some cool music in the background.

I know!

Not sure what SE was thinking with this. The Final Fantasy franchise appeals mostly to young- and middle-aged adults, not high school teenagers. Not like this commercial would resonate with teenagers, anyway. It's just bad.

Like the FFXIII commercials? The commercials in Japan were fine though.

I'm a teenager and I actually really like the commercial.

It's corny and silly, but I think that's ok.
