DoL Abilities: Am I missing something?Follow

So, my Lv31 Botanist (and my Lv27 miner has it too) somewhat recently (within the last 5? levels) learned an ability I, for the life of me, cannot figure out how to even use.

It is called "Brute Force" and it states:

"Increases the chance for regular or HQ yield by 100%. Can only be activated after Chain #4."

Problem.......it appears to be impossible to get Chain #4 on any node I've ever seen.

There IS another ability that grants 1 extra whack at a node... but... it disrupts your chain, and does not work if you haven't whacked the node at least once.

So, what gives with this ability? How do you actually USE this? Even the "Gathering Attempts+1" nodes won't give me Chain #4 (the very last hit that makes the node disappear gives me the Chain #4), and the "Restore 1 attempt" ability breaks the Chain, so...

This is best used on unspoiled nodes.

Unspoiled nodes have 6 swings natively. 1 swing to uncover, use the skill to get that swing back, then 6 whacks gets you chain 5 and your 100% HQ.

I'm under the impression the ability is mainly used for gathering unspoiled nodes. This thread from the O forums discusses rotations for unspoiled nodes and they seem to be making use of Brunt Force to maximize quality.

Also incredibly useful while doing guild leves. You get six swings per node.

If you have high enough STR in relation to the node, there are some nodes that will grant a fifth hit, but yeah, like others have said, it's used mostly for unspoiled nodes.

Okay, what exactly is an "Unspoiled" Node?

Is that an Endgame, Lv45+ kinda thing?

Because if so... why give the ability in the 20s when you can't reliably use it (except for Leves, but I'll get to that in a sec) until near the end of your leveling?

As for Leves...

Most Leves I've done, asked me to gather things that fall in the 75%-80% range (occasionally lower). Other than blowing 250GP on the +50%, I haven't seen a single Chain #4 yet because I *always* fail at least one swing even at 90%-some chance while doing Leves for some dumb reason.

How's your gear? If you're failing even on leves, you should try to increase your gathering attributes through better gear or materia attachments.

I use the 15% boost to make that 80% turn to 95%, which gives much greater odds of hitting 5 in a row. Then you get #6 guaranteed.

Very important for those quality leves, where you want to get a score of 320 but still be within 5 minutes.

An unspoiled node is a 50 gathering point which pops in a certain zone at a certain time of the day. The exception to this is Mor Dhona for cluster modes which more than once. Essentially the rarer materials cannot be gathered constantly and are tied to these unspoiled nodes. When you eventually get access you start targeting particular items and learn which zones and which times they pop in. Unspoiled nodes also have an extra layer to them, they require you to uncover what's in each slot. So when you click on the node, everything is hidden. You uncover what's in each slot by either swinging at it or by using another level 50 ability to expose all the slots at once.

The good thing about unspoiled nodes is that we now know which slots items are in so for example if you're farming Fragrant Logs you know to go to South Shroud, Camp Tranquil at 2am game time and hit the sixth slot to expose them. Then you can take your swings and use your abilities etc to harvest from them. You can find out more here on ffxiv clock.

I guess this explains why people keep using that skill every time. I never understood it.

That said, unless you are desperately after that one HQ swing, i see absolutely no reason not to just use King's Yield II as i've always have and get 5 x 5 (25) ores out of it, instead of using the one extra swing to get 6 x 3 (18) ores. Even if three of those are HQ.

Yes this exactly. I swing for the normal ones with high yields until the last swing, then I use this and go for the high level drop for the last swing. Helps pack in the extra on the leves with the percentage bonuses.
