To any FC leaders who were previously on the fence about small houses, I highly recommend taking another look at the smalls and checking out the new basements.
In my opinion, small houses are now perfectly sized for small FCs. The staircase to the basement is in a new hallway off to the side of the main floor, so it doesn't take away floor space. Also, the basement is larger than the top floor. It really adds that nice, bigger room that small houses were missing before, plus having two floors is just really nice.
My FC bit the bullet and got a small, simply because we realized we'd never reasonably afford a medium, and now we're all very glad we did.
Props to SE for adding in the basements!

We did the same, after I popped into a small and was able to scope out the size of the basement. It really made them go from "not worth it" to "just right."
The upside was since we had been saving for a medium, we were able to plunk down the cash for beachfront property in Mist - the most expensive small plots. We had to go to Ward 2 to do it, but we all agreed we would rather be right on the beach than be stuck up on the cliff in Ward 1.
It's perfect.

The FC I'm part of consists of myself and a small band of XI refugees who have all known eachother for years, max usually of 8 active a day, so a small house was perfect to begin with. Now with the added basement, we have a bar/jacuzzi area to chill out in, it's pretty epic! Come along, have a beer, just make sure to tip the Apkallu bartender ;-)
We jumped a while back on a small house because we wanted one specific lot that we figured was going to go fast (we were right, may have been the first small lot taken on all wards, or at least top 2-3). Now that a basement is here, it's taken our cramped house and turned it into a great size for us. Very happy with it for small FC's :)
Our basement has become the group barracks and the research room, making some inventive use of the dividers. Loving the added space!
What?! This is ridiculous! I can't believe SE added basements to the small houses. All FC's who can't at least afford a medium house should feel sub-par and live in shame inside their inn-room small FC house!

Faintly, I recall someone, I don't remember who, but on these boards, making a complaint that the new level would 'half the size of the original to make room for the stairs'

I poked my head inside a small house the other day just to scope out the size of the basement. I couldn't even find the stairs at first, because the part of the wall that was removed to make room for the stairs had a couch or something in front of it that I had to jump over to get to the stairs.
Small houses doable? heh, excellent april fools joke. You got most of us there. You sounded so believable too.

It works ok. It is still small, but at least now it is manageable. I like the size for maybe personal housing. A FC larger than 25 active members would want a medium I believe, but it is now decent size for FC's with 10-20 active.
