Account Security Reminder (03/17/2014)

To further strengthen account security when playing FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn, players are encouraged to log in using a security token or software token.

These security devices generate one-time passwords, which remain effective for only a fixed period of time and become invalid once the user logs in, offering protection against spyware such as key logging programs. Using a one-time password in combination with your Square Enix ID and password will offer greatly strengthened security for your account.

Learn more about how to register your one-time password.

In-Game Bonus for One-Time Password Users

As of patch 2.2, when logged into the game with a one-time password, you will have the option to designate one aetheryte of your choice as a free destination. Teleporting to your free destination will incur no gil fee. Moreover, you may change your free destination as many times as desired.
* The free destination is only valid for Square Enix accounts with a registered one-time password.
* In the event your one-time password has been deactivated, teleporting to your destination will incur a gil fee. Furthermore, your free location cannot be changed while your one-time password is deactivated.

As a quick and easy way to ensure a safe and secure gaming experience, we highly recommend all users take advantage of the one-time password feature.

Awesome idea!

The phone app is free, and I have no clue why EVERYONE doesn't use something like this. It's just common sense.

This is going to go very well with FC gardening! Maybe people will even start hanging out in the housing area again (specifically my FC housing, which seems to be deserted everytime I hang out there).

Awesome idea.

Every game needs an in-game incentive to use the security token to get people to get off their duffs and grab either the mobile one or the $7 dongle so we get a lot fewer hacked accounts.

XI does it, WoW does it (in-game pet, and some guild features can be locked to key-only members), and now XIV. Hopefully more games follow suit.

Totally! This is exactly what I was thinking.

Our house is located directly above a summoning bell and market board, and we have an amazing view of the Mists. This will allow me to return there whenever I please to craft, buy stuff for my character or grow plants.

I hope they make this possible. Currently, you cannot set the FC house teleport as a favourite destination. This might carry forward and you might not be able to set it as the free desitination either... Smiley: frown

I think SE said they were working on it IIRC.

Another good use of the free location would be Mor Dhona. I pretty much always hang out at my FC house. If I need to repair (seriously, no armor repair NPCs in the housing wards?!?), shout for party members, or just want to check the general /shout spam, I head to Mor Dhona. Smiley: nod

You don't need to. According to the 2.15 patch notes:

* Although the miniature aetheryte cannot be set as a favored destination, the cost of teleportation will be the same as that of favored destinations.

I'm probably going to set Limsa to free and keep my HP at Mor Dhona... that seems to be the consensus as far as popular choices on Reddit too...

I can afford to wait to HP at Revenant's Toll every 15 minutes... but I want the free teleport to Limsa anytime I want.

Right, but the point still stands. If you can't select the Aetheryte to mark it as a favroued destination, how would you select it to mark it as the free destination?

I mean, I hope I am wrong and that it can be done - I'm just going based on the current pattern and not setting my hopes up too high.

Well until they add a repair vendor to the housing area... Limsa makes more sense as the free one anyways. I like to hang out in front of the FC house too, so hopefully they'll be adding this soon.

That's a good point. However, you could just make the aetheryte for the corresponding city your free location, and then use the aetheryte there to teleport to your district for free. That's actually an even better option, because then you'll have a much larger hub as your "free" place.

It's one extra loading screen (seconds with an SSD drive), but probably the better option even if you could set your FC house as your free point.

2) No one can login to your account in the first place, since it will lock down the moment you try and access it from another IP.

Accounts are perfectly safe, and arent being hacked because they cannot hack them in the first place due to the lockout. A lockout which, funny enough, is removed when you use a one-time login key. Which is something that can and is compromised (on other games using a similar method).

So really, when you think about it, it's probably even SAFER not to use a one-time password....

We apparently don't live in the same universe. Or, at the very least, we don't play the same game.

3 times since game launch, my ISP has decided to change my IP address. Each time, logging in with the same computer, same MAC address, I was denied logon and had to go through a process to unlock my account.

My ISP resets my DSL once per week, so my IP address (usually only the last two numbers) change once a week.

I wouldn't wanna have to unlock my account every time it resets and/or the power goes out either. And some ISPs are very large, having lots of different IPs they can assign you.

They lock your account when you changed IP? I have no idea how this hasn't happened to me yet. Sometimes my IP changes when I so much as kick my modem by accident. That sounds so stupid.

In other MMORPGs I've played, if you log in from a different IP, you'd just be on a restricted trading/buying/selling/dropping items for a few minutes. I thought that was good.

Aye, it does.

But these anti-OTP people will go "B-b-b-but what if someone gets you with a MitM (Man in the Middle) attack!?!?"

Except.........MitM attacks are..

1). Rare.
2). Extremely difficult to pull off.
3). Requires you to have gotten a keylogger on your machine.
4). Requires them to be monitoring you in real-time (since the OTPs are only valid for, what, <10 seconds?)
5). Requires them to do it MULTIPLE TIMES successfully to get into your account and steal it off you. They might be able to do it once, but to gain access to your account permanently they have to remove the OTP key from your account and that itself takes an OTP input. The victim would have to be trying and retrying and retrying multiple times and that's pretty stupid in of itself.

And last I checked, Man in the Middle attacks are the only way to crack these things, unless you are using the Phone version and your Phone gets hacked. But then, again, that usually only happens on Jailbroken phones (unless your attacker gets your phone physically) last I checked. Don't Jailbreak? Its against the law anyways from what I've read.

The only other way to defeat this security would be to hack into Digipass's servers and... haha, good luck with that.

Hehe...rare...hehe.

No, they're more common than you think. The only reason you rarely hear about it is because the ones who WOULD do a mitm attack rarely targets MMORPGs.

And thus, in the context of this discussion, are rare.

Don't use iOS or Android so I'm not going to pay $11 for a fob.

Can't they crack the algorithm that the fob uses to generate the next key?

They'd need to know the serial # of your fob (which is written on the back of it).

The only way they are going to know that, is to actually SEE your fob or get into your account (which they can't do without the fob).

EDIT: I suppose given enough inputs from your fob they could perhaps attempt to brute-force the algorithm based upon previous numbers generated by it, but this would surely raise red flags everywhere and it would be very plainly obvious that someone is ******** around with your account.

And $11?

Last I heard it was like $7.50 or some-such, as they were selling them at-cost. Unless, of course, that went up. Still, $11 for in-game perks and peace-of-mind to know that the chances of you getting hacked on any given day go down to less than a hundredth of a percent, well...

I don't mind an $11 one-time purchase. Heck, $11 won't even buy you a lunch in some places.

I would Smiley: dubious if you didn't receive two at that price. Blizz authenticators are $6.50, why are XIV's $11? Oh wait, I know exactly why they cost $11 Smiley: sly

Could be shipping costs? IIRC, Blizz offers free shipping with their authenticators. Maybe SE is not able to do that for some reason or another? $5 shipping sounds about right these days.

It's $10.99 after late last year.

Read on for more information about the price adjustment.

As a new player who hasn't committed to playing "forever" nor do I have a lot to lose it doesn't seem worth the investment to me.
