Hooky!Follow

Not me. My boss. She just told me she's playing hooky to go skiing.

This means I have an afternoon of staring at documentation ahead of me. I can play hooky too.

What's your favorite background music in the game? I keep getting the Field Leve music randomly stuck in my head at odd times of the day. Going to miss that once I've gotten miner capped.

I really love the music in Gridania. It's a fun place to sit and craft.

I think the Gridania music means a lot to me since it's all I heard for that first month of alpha testing.

The Christmas song from Jeuno..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4m8w9xkelw&noredirect=1

I am sorry I just love that song. Anyone know the name of it?.. I have several FFXI cd's and have been looking for one with that song..

I actually dont have a fav from FFXIV yet. I have a music cd from the game too, Just dont really have a favorite yet.. I think since Tes and I play in the same room we keep the sound down so much I dont listen to the music as much as I did in FFXI... I also think since you spent more time in a zone in FFXI you either learned to like or hate the music.

I think the music in FFXIV is more epic than FFXI but it mostly sounds the same too me and runs together...

Lol Nashred beat me to it.

To this day the regular Jeuno theme pops in my head. I had a lot of favorite tracks in 11.

As far as FFXIV music goes I love some of the boss and NM fate music. I tend to like most of the "night" themes for the cities as well. Also the beginning of Pharos is pretty sweet. I wish it continued throughout the dungeon.

Background music? Haukke Manor hard mode, hands down, although it's a combination of the normal BGM and the battle BGM in there.

Twilight over Thanalan would get my vote. Amazing piece of music.

The only time I turn my music on is for either Garuda, Titan, or Haukke Manor HM. :P Also, coil has some great music too. For some reason I keep it off during it. I think the habit was to turn it off so I could hear TeamSpeak and haven't bothered to turn it back on.

When the game was new, I would always make sure to have the music on for Ul'dah at night. It's such a peaceful piece.

On the topic of Gridania music...for some reason, I get it confused with The Shire music because it sounds a little similar to me in certain sections! Here's the piano collections version of it:

So much this! Gridania is my home city and I've always commented on this in FC chat.

As for my favorite music, its really hard to pick, so I'll go with that opening intro.

As soon as I heard the Titan BGM, I knew it would be a tough fight.
I wasn't disappointed Smiley: lol

My favorite idle music is definitely Costa del Sol, though.

My fave piece of music, hands down, is the music which plays in Eastern La Noscea, south of Wineport. Such a beautiful piece of music. I always, without fail, take a trek south while waiting for my coil groups to get organised, and just sit and listen :-)

Does anyone know a shortcut key to toggle BGMs on and off? I really wish I could find it (if it were available). There are some times when I absolutely need to turn the BGMs off to hear what is going on in TS or in battle. But as soon as that window ends, I'd really like to turn the music back on. :( Going into the ESC > system config menu each time to do so is a little bit of trouble.

I love the Gridania music so much. In the Physical CE of the game they gave us a soundtrack. In that soundtrack is a 10min long bit of the music in Gridania.

Lets just say I love it so much, it so soothing, nice, sweet, entertaining, that I play it on my ipod, every night, while I'm falling asleep Anyone else listen to music to fall asleep, on an ipod or... walk-man? I do and I listen to Gridania. So awesome. I can also say that I am usually asleep by the time its over. Its such a great song.

Observatorium, hands down winner.

In XI, Heaven's Tower was my favorite. The Observatorium music has a similar feel without being the same tune, and it too has me going there to hang out and listen.

I haven't learned enough FFXIV music to really pick out any favorites yet, though I'd have to say that one of the Thanalaan Tracks had a decent "travelling" feel to it. It was the kinda tune I didn't mind walking to, lol.

In XI, since other people mentioned it, here are some of my favorites:

1): BCNM (the old ones, Worms' Turn, etc) theme. Man, I loved this theme when I used to hear it. The first 10 seconds I heard that I was like "oh crap... what did I get myself into?"

2). Jeuno Starlight Celebration. YES! I wish this could play year 'round in Jeuno, then Jeuno wouldn't sound so sad...

3). Promyvion. I don't know why this music just... I can't stop listening to it sometimes. It is so sad, so distant.. but yet I love it. First time I stepped into that zone I was like "wow, this is... is this FFXI? this is so different..."

I would have to agree that Costa del Sol and the Titan BGM are two good ones.

I don't know why some of you started mentioning FFXI tracks, but I was recently thinking about FFXIV's soundtrack as a whole (especially compared to FFXI). I think the real problem is that FFXIV's tracks don't really represent the mood of the area or battle as well as in FFXI or other Final Fantasy titles. They sometimes seem a little randomly selected.

The reason Final Fantasy songs are so memorable is not only because they're well composed but because they're often intelligently placed to convey just the right mood/theme of a specific area or scenario.

I've always liked the Promyvion music of Final Fantasy XI (I recently realized the Mizuta re-recorded it with his band at some point https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srpM58IsBYE). But when I think about it, I'm not sure if it's as much about the quality of the song as it is about the brilliant placement of the song considering the area and what your party had to go through. I'm repeating myself here but I think Soken's tracks are decent but they definitely don't convey the right mood 99% of the time.

There were a few places in XI where the music didn't quite match the atmosphere. Batalia Downs is a graveyard, and yet it had slow moody beach music with a flute and guitar.

By far the entire best track in XI for matching music to place was the Dynamis-Xarcabard music. There was so much energy and panic in that zone.
#23 Mar 13 2014 at 9:27 AM Rating: Good
Of course, there was a couple that weren't quite right (there's so many songs), but for the most part the music in Final Fantasy XI did a great job of translating the atmosphere. I just don't get that feeling whatsoever in Final Fantasy XIV.

I apologize if anyone is a fan of his work but I sort of hope they can convince Mizuta to move on from XI completely and push Soken out of the picture for XIV's expansion soundtrack. I don't feel that Soken understands how to compose for an MMORPG. You definitely have a point about Batallia Downs but for the most part you can look up any song from XI and it just screams everything about the area you're in, whether the track is simple or elaborate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SovV1pb2jug (edit: didn't post the one I meant to post but that works also) When you entered this area, you knew what it was about. I don't even need to post the top favorites like Zi'Tah because it isn't necessary to prove my point. I can just select a random track.

Ronfaure, Sarutabaruta, Gustaberg. Those songs are so damn nostalgic. And of course all the capital city themes.

Gustaberg!

Yes, I remember that one. Sounded so nice.

Ronfaure... well.... that "sung" version was awesome. The acapella one.

Saruta was OK, though didn't strike me as anything huge.
