Stupid MMO's ...Follow

You've suckered me again.

After blazing through Bravely Default I decided I really missed my time in FFXI and in the SE multiverse. So please indulge me in a few questions.

Does it matter which world I pick? Can I easily have friends join me on these worlds if I sucker a few friends into joining me?

I've read quite a few beginners guides and what not but what is the dumbest thing I can do right off the bat in game?

This game has been running for a while so I'd assume that the economy is goofed already but I find that selling mats to high level crafters always makes money. Is that still true in this game?

Cheers

I still think XI is a better option at this point, but it's hard to ***** up anything in XIV. Your story quests are the rails that guide you through the game until you're at a point where it's all familiar, but it's mostly common sense. The fact that you enjoyed XI means you know enough about MMOs that this will come naturally if you decide to try it.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

The single dumbest thing you can do is accidentally pick a class for a city you don't want to play in for your start. You'll be stuck on that class and in that city for 15 levels.

I thought you could walk between towns from level 1.

When you don't know what the towns are like it really doesn't matter which town you choose I suppose.

Sure, if you want to walk past level 50 monsters.

Coming from FFXI making money is so easy in this game, you're in for a treat.

The dumbest thing to do? Assume that the game begins at the level cap. Let me tell you right off the bat that the endgame is a miserable place full of manchild elitists. There's so much fun to be had from 1 to 49, don't act like it doesn't matter.

My tip is to not ignore guild leves.

They're easy sources of gil, and you can also get dungeon-quality items from them. You can make gil while saving gil. If you're in a hurry, you can set leves on a lower difficulty and blow through them, still collecting the gil and rewards.

Making a steady stream of gil in FFXIV is pretty easy, and getting in the habit of knocking out a few leves each day is a great way to start.

You also get tons of exp for finishing leves... on par with what FATES can give, only leves can be done faster AND solo.

(I'd like to echo the post above mine, though, in that you shouldn't feel any need to rush to level 50. This game was designed to make it easy to catch up with veteran players once you hit endgame, so there's no need to worry about being left behind.)

Come to Lamia. Join Catwho, Valkayree and myself in The Swarm. Plenty of FFXI refugees in the shell FC to make you feel at home.

Any worlds I should avoid or are they all still populated pretty well?
#10 Mar 08 2014 at 2:05 PM Rating: Excellent
I haven't heard of any servers that are lacking in population. Servers are about to feel even more full with the release of Patch 2.2 this month (people who take breaks always come back at patch time), and then in April, we'll have an influx of PS4 players.

The economies between servers have stabilized, too, so there aren't even any differences now between Legacy servers and newer player servers.... and Legacy players can now move to other servers, too, so that's also a non-issue.

In other words, no need to worry about choosing a server based on population... they're all good.

Though you do want to choose a server with people that play around the time you play. My work hours changed after the game launched and now 4-5 days a week my play time is during the least active time on my server.

You can walk between Gridania and Uldah, but Limsa is out on an island. There is a ferry, but if you can ride it before level 15, I never found a way to do it.

They have a world transfer service so, if they decide to join you later on and don't start on your world, yes they can just swap over for a nominal fee.

What world to start on? It doesn't matter at this point in the game because everything has evened out and the economies are set. Well I think so anyway. What you do want to know is the FC/LS rates, NA/JP/EU Server HUBS, Social ability/Community of the world.

Chick HERE for location of Data Centers there can be some latency issues by picking a JP Data Center and living in NA. Finding a LS/FC on each server is easy enough but finding a server that has a good community couls be difficult. My suggestion is to either join Ultros, which is the official zam.com server where a lot of these posters play or, join a Role Playing (RP) Server. RP Servers depend on a good community and friendship so you would expect that to work in your favor. Click HERE for info on that but it seems Balmung (Legacy Server) and Gilgamesh (Non-Legacy) are the two main RP Servers. Its up to you how you want to go. I am on Excalibur and it seems pretty nice .

Don’t ignore job quests and don’t ignore the starting side quests and leves. They are meant to teach you how to play the game. It is a very good tutorial. Do not just speed through them. Same advice for the job quests, on every job. It teaches you the function of the skill you are learning and how to use it. Use those tools. Also, low level dungeons are a great way to practice and get exp while doing it.

Materials do make you money but money is so easy to make in this game its not an issue. There are tons of outlets. If you need a lot of money, crafting and gathering are probably your highest yields. Selling gear, like an Astral Ring or Monster Signa in FFXI are things of the past.

Seconding Laverda's invitation to come join us on Lamia. (Assuming you are in a US time zone.) Our Free Company just hit Rank 6 last night, so we're ready to buy a small house on Day 1 of patch 2.2 if they don't suck - or to continue saving up for a medium house. Smiley: nod And your friends would be welcome too.

I appreciate the offer but I worry that I play so late at night 11pm EST to 3am EST that I'd rarely see any one :P
#16 Mar 12 2014 at 2:03 PM Rating: Excellent
Actually I think that matches Valk and Verda's times pretty closely. Most of us don't get on much earlier than 8PM EST and I personally drop off by midnight, but I think Verda and Valk are right along with you in the wee EST hours. Smiley: lol

Yep. I'm almost never on before 10, more usually 11, and routinely stay on until 2 or later even on weeknights. I just catch up on sleep on the weekend.

Perhaps I'll make a character over there this weekend and check it out.

I started on Cactaur just to check things out and see if my machine was up to snuff. Game runs fine on my AMD APU but I bought a new video card anyway just so I could see ALL of the bells and whistles. Art style is pretty interesting.

I'm still at the stage where everything looks fun so I haven't narrowed down what I'd like to play. On Cactaur I've been running around as a lancer. It's interesting that Bard is attached to Archer, not something I expected. I guess I'll just level everything to 15 or so and figure it out from there.

Thanks for the comments.

BTW, who should I look for (or is there an in-game search for Companies?)

Valk Ayree or Katarh Mest can give you an invite. One or the other of us should be on this evening.

I do sort of envy not being able to join you guys on those servers. Sadly Balmung takes up all of my already very limited free time.

Perhaps one day I'll get on your guyses servers and you won't mind a visitor around a while. I'd roll a new character for it though. Plenty of character slots left that just aren't used.
