I'm Out.Follow

Not quitting the games or the forums, but Zam has found that keeping contractors for more than a year is a no-no, and so I'm no longer a paid admin. The powers that be are checking to see if I can still moderate you knuckleheads and update our main page with stories and such as I have been doing for the past almost 4 years now, but if not I'll probably still hang out here. Thanks for being a great community to manage, you made my job easier (most of you anyway).

Like, legally a no no? That sounds weird. :(

Anyways, you were super awesome for the community, glad you will still be around. I guess now at least you can get rate ups? lol.

Legally a no no sounds like what it is. Unless they could find some means to renew the contract, but I think that they might have to start offering him full time employee benefits if they do it for more than a full year.

I'm not sure the workings of it myself. I plan on releasing some of my own stuff for the game like the Logitech app I've previewed, a gathering plugin for FFXIVAPP, etc, so it will be pretty much like it was before I was an admin. I can't imagine posting anywhere else.
#5 Mar 05 2014 at 5:57 PM Rating: Excellent
They wouldn't be the first. I lost a contract for that very same reason a few years back. I'm not sure if there were legal ramifications or not, but it is becoming more and more common.

Finally, I get a chance to rate you up.

Don't worry, Wint... being an unpaid admin ain't so bad...

....

Smiley: frown

In all seriousness though, you've done a great job of updating the site for as long as you have. I tip my hat to you, good sir.

I've been rating you up in my head for a long time now.

I hope they can work something out for you to continue getting paid... Maybe if you incorporate a business and contract with them as a corporation or some other form of separate legal entity it would make a difference?

Probably not worth it for what I was getting, it's not much (although still helpful in this day and age Smiley: smile)

Hopefully not gonna turn this into a politics derail, but this is the correct answer. Welcome to the new America, where businesses will only employ independent contractors (making you pay your own payroll taxes), or keep people under 30 hours/part-time to avoid having to pay any benefits.

Kind of glad I got a job with an "old economy" corporation (a big timber company).

I think pure tech companies are the worst offenders. Part of that, though, is because there is so much churn in IT as people bounce from position to position. My company is alarmed at the "high" turnover the IT department has compared with the other bits, where someone sticks around 20-30 years. I've got a pretty cushy analyst position and while I could get paid a lot more as a contractor on the short term, I'd have the commute from hell to Atlanta where all those positions are. As it is, I have a 10 minute drive to work.

I did actually consider switching to a contractor position once my student loans are paid off (another three years) and the need for a steady paycheck will not be as pressing, but I'd have to do more work. Smiley: lol

Just incorporating a business is worth it, your accountant will get you so much more on your tax returns just from that...

You'd be surprised how much of your daily expenses can be written off when you have a Taxpayer ID#.

Anyways just trying to help, who knows why they are making that decision, but if you technically work for your own corporation, then they don't need to pay you benefits or whatever they are trying to avoid since you're working for your own corporation.

Yeah I'm not going to pretend I know what you're talking about, I have TurboTax do my taxes if that tells you anything, and I don't think I've had anything but the standard deduction ever Smiley: laugh

You could probably incorporate as a Delaware corporation for next to nothing.

Plus, then when you meet people, you could say, "Hi, I'm a Delaware corporation."

Do what I do. Hit someone and use their corpse. It gets a little gamey after a week or two, but there really is no shortage of pedestrians.

No, now we finally get a chance to rate him down. Every time we go to rate him up, he is already "Excellent." When we go to rate him down, however, we can't.

Let us know how it feels to be mortal again, Wint. Mwahaha.

Thanks for being an awesome admin and adding to the community not taking away from it. I also want to applaud you on allowing some of our shenanigans go on longer than some of other sites would have allowed it. Good work.
