Hi all.

I ran the benchmard of FFXIV before I bought it, and got a score of 3005.

So I bought the game, but am finding it basically unplayable.

Here's what's happening:
-Sound distorts frequently.
- Runs at about 7fps.
- Can't seem to click on any menus!

I'm about to give up and install GuildWars2.

I've got updated video card drivers (HD mobility Radeon 8545). I've put my antivirus on gaming mode, I've toned down all the graphics settings and the resolution.

Any ideas? I'm desperate!

We'd be able to help more with your computer specs. But based on your mention of mobility graphics card, I'd wager to say laptop...

Sadly getting a decent score on the benchmark doesn't mean it will play on your system. This is on the site for the benchmark

Even if the results displayed by this software exceed the minimum system requirements, your system might not run FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn due to the configuration of your computer or resident software. Additionally, the performance of this software and FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn may differ. Please use this software for reference only.

I'm trying to scope out the specs you gave me and having a hard time in finding any information on the processor. One thing to try is roll back to a previous version of drivers for your graphic card as having the updated version is not always best. Can also try turning down all the settings to the lowest possible settings.

Edit: Found Card listed in spec's

Your laptop isn't capable of running this game. Try your luck with GW2, but I would imagine it's not going to run much better. FWIW, benchmarks are only good at telling you how well you score on benchmarks.

Try turning all of your graphics settings down. You could always play it on PS3, but you'd have to buy another copy of the game and possibly the system as well. PS4 will be an option soon and probably still as cheap as it would be to build a PC.

Thanks Filth. I thought that might be the case.
Maybe I'll give FFXI a go.
One last question before I let you go: Does it run ok on the PS3? I'm happy to buy it again if it'll run ok. I've got a PS3.

Well the specs look fine enough to run. And the sound crashing makes me think its some sort of driver issue.

(I have an issue of FFXIV slowing then crashing while having audio issues due to my audio drivers and alt-tabing...but I think it's a unique issue to me)

Like SillyHawk says, you will have to roll back drivers; turn down settings and test different drivers.

But even if you do get it to run better, you still might be hitting 7fps on occasion.

That's your best option unless you're planning on getting a PS4. Last I heard you could upgrade from PS3 to PS4 so that seems to be the cheapest and quickest way to play. It plays best on PC with PS4 and PS3 not too far behind and the cost matches performance.

You might try the suggestion above about the drivers. I know with FFXI I couldn't play the game unless I custom modified my graphics drivers. It's a possibility that your laptop would perform better.

My first suspicion is a drive problem as well. My shiny new gaming laptop was choking out at 10 FPS and it was because it didn't come with the graphic's driver pre-installed.

Both Nvidia and Radeon have released updated drivers with better support for XIV in the last few months, and it's usually a good idea to keep your drivers up to date unless you've been warned that it breaks something.

Yea I almost doubled my frame rate with the new ati drivers.
Make sure Catalyst Control Center setting are right and high performance for the game when plugged in especially if you have switchable graphics.

Well he said he updated the drivers, but there may be an issue where a modified driver would work. You don't get them directly from AMD or nVidia.

An old laptop I used to use for XI had a feature where it would switch between integrated graphics(CPU) to a dedicated GPU whenever it loaded games. When you load POL launcher the integrated graphics would handle it, but it would switch to the GPU when you clicked the 'play' button. For whatever reason, this caused the game to lose fullscreen and POL would crash before even getting to the title screen. The only workaround was to force the laptop to switch to the dedicated GPU before loading in from POL and it required modifying the drivers(and subsequently voiding the warranty Smiley: glare ).

Anyway, there may be some specifically modded drivers available that will remedy the issue. Search specifically using 'FFXIV FPS sound problem' and include the model of your laptop. If you can find out what driver your sound is using that might help too.

Although you are on a laptop, your specs look fine. It might be possible that XIV is not running on the discrete graphics, even though the benchmark is. They are separate executables, so if ATI is anything like NVIDIA's optimus, certain software can run on different graphics, in this case the discrete graphics versus the integrated graphics. Then again I'm not sure the graphics switching for ATI works the same as Optimus, with there likely only being a global "turn on" or "turn off" discrete graphics option instead of selective options (there might be licensing/copyright issues if ATI was selective like NVIDIA). In that case, a driver update or driver settings are your only means of improving performance.

Edit: Filth beat me to it.
