Well...I guess we will have to make some sacrifices in order to ensure console users receive the most important content.

You don't seem to understand pr speak.

They are trying to get ps3 players to buy the ps4 version with fear, they won't drop ps3 support ever if there is a decent sized playerbase.

FFXI has proven their track history.

Basically what will happen is expansions will only be released on PS3/PS4/PC in Japan (most likely their largest PS3 playerbase) and only on PC/PS4 everywhere else. See: Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin

Ya, that's also my guess, JP support until the end of time. People over there tend to hang on to their consoles for longer periods of time. Especially when they get addicted/good at a certain game, they won't let it go.

Also, saying eventually we'll drop support could mean in about 10 years. The ps3 hard drive is also upgradable, so as long as their willing to make lower res things, the game won't go anywhere.

And gain what? The Ps4 version is free for Ps3 players...

It's free but not interchangeable. Once you switch to PS4, you cannot play that account on PS3 any more without buying a new PS3 copy. That raised my eyebrows.

I'm still frankly surprised they are supporting the PS2 in XI on Japan (and to some extent in the US, just no new expansions here. Translation isn't worth the cost any more.) I predicted that they'd drop it when the PS4 came out. I was wrong, but then again Microsoft is crazily extending XP support for businesses for another few years. Smiley: disappointed

The hospital I work at still uses XP with no plans to upgrade anytime soon. Best part is, they still limit us to IE 6...yet they are **** about security and what not...makes sense to me!

Even my old world economy company is at least using Windows 7 standard with IE8 standard, with plans to upgrade to IE10 next year (once we fix a dozen internal apps this year.) It's a good time to be a web software analyst. Smiley: nod

You gain the ability to see your spell effects without slowing your system to a crawl, and SE gains praise from Sony because they have potentially sold another dying Vita to be repurposed for remote play. Win / Win.

This is a good move. They are saying the future of FFXIV is more important that keeping old technology. Good for them. its bold but it will pay off when the time comes.

Also, I am going to be someone buying a Vita because of this. Nice job taking my money. SE better get a nice cut of the sudden jump in sales. I will hold out until that new version comes over here though.

They dropped PS2 support for XI, especially outside of Japan. Note, support does NOT mean they blocked the ability to log in for it, it means they will no longer support it going forward and only push out patches for the remaining few on the PS2 until they drop the service.

So if they drop PS3 support, it would mean absolutely nothing for FFXIV as yoshi stated in a recent interview, even the DX11 patch will be absoultely nothing other than a bit of graphical upgrades here and there as his whole philosophy is lack of diversity and everyone should be able to be equal, in both gameplay and platform.

It would open up more options for improving the game overall if they could shed the PS3's memory limitation, so of course they'd want to leave open the possibility. But.. there are a lot of PS3's out there.

When I first saw this thread title, I assumed this was just PR speak taken out of context or something (based on my experience with XI, when SE clung to the PS2 even as it dragged down the game).

However, after reading that interview, I honestly believe SE would prefer dropping PS3 support for future content (beyond the first expansion, obviously). This could still be a couple years down the road, but based on those interview comments, SE's mindset seems to have shifted.

I'd be all for changing it up, too. Most people play on PC, and the PS3 version isn't nearly as nice as the PC. I own both versions, and I'd rather play on low settings on my laptop rather than the PS3.

The bit about PS2 doesn't surprise me at all. I'd actually be less shocked if SE came out saying that they were dropping PS3 support and porting the game to PS2. Yes the tech is old, but purely from a business perspective; you'd more than double your prospective playerbase if you ported from any current gen back to PS2. That's how popular PS2 was and still is in Japan and even worldwide to a lesser extent. If you were given the choice of having a PS2 or a PS3 with a full library of games, which would you pick?

The suggestion that XIV would drive PS4 and even Vita sales Smiley: dubious

I will also be buying a ps4 mainly for this game, but no point in a vita when I have my laptop.

It only surprises me a little bit. But what surprises me is they are talking about it already this early after release. The only reason I can think of is they are trying to discourage people from buy the ps3 version of the game.

I think you misunderstood what I meant when I said 'drive sales'.

Super Mario, Sonic, Metal Gear, Halo, ect.

These are games that drive sales. These are the games that of millions of gamers use to make decisions about which console they're buying, not FFXIV. I cling to scraps of the faith I have left in humanity Catwho. Please don't take them away by convincing me that people would pay more for an untested console than it would cost them to upgrade their PC and get better performance Smiley: frown

Trying to boost sales and inflate numbers if only temporarily, just like with the steam version you have to rebuy it even if you already own the game.

The Final Fantasy crowd is pretty sizable. Although XV is slated for an xbox port, the fact that both XIV and XV are on the PS4 is pretty good incentive to buy that system... especially if you can upgrade to the PS4 version of XIV for free if you already have the ps3 version.

I do agree that this game isn't a system seller, but it's not insignificant, either. FFXIV will definitely drive some sales.
