Small FC House ImpressionsFollow

My FC bought a small house about a week ago and since many people seem to be curious as to what it's like to have one, I thought I'd share my experience so far. Please share your thoughts as well.

When we were saving for a house I was hoping we would be able to aim for a medium house. The small plots looked tiny and the medium houses were a nice step up. However several members including the leader wanted a house asap so as soon as we had the money for a small house we picked our plot and made our purchase. We have made our home open to visitors and many people have been coming in to check it out. Many have said they're saving for a larger house.

Given the experience our FC has had with the house, I'm very satisfied with our purchase. It turns out that a small house is just fine for us. We have close to 70 members but there hasn't been more than maybe six or seven in the house at a time. It's nice to be able to come in and see right away who's there. When someone enters, everyone in the room is aware of it and can welcome the person.

We have a couch, a bed, a hot tub and a couple of tables with a big open area in the middle of the room. The hot tub has been a big hit. We love to chill in the hot tub and chat and conclude our days together before logging off for bed.

The front yard is small but we haven't been out there much. We do have a campfire with two stumps to sit on and a table with chairs. I like to craft out there and watch the sunrises and sunsets.

Overall even though it's just a small house it has been such a great experience having it. I hope everyone can have this experience of having an FC house sometime in the near future.

Would you think the house would feel crowded with 9-15 people there during peak hours?

The members in my FC hasn't really said much about whether we want to aim for a medium/large house, or settle for a small one. I took a look at the housing wards in Ul'dah, and one thing I noticed is that there a LOT of small land plots, compared to the number of plots for medium and large houses. Because of that, I don't expect small land plots to be as scarce or contested as medium to large ones.

As far as I know, you can't recoup the gil you've sunk into a plot of land down the road if you want to upgrade to a bigger plot. So buying a small plot now would delay us from getting a medium plot, perhaps to the point where there won't be any available medium plots by the time we raise enough gil for it (whereas other FCs could get there sooner than us simply because they didn't use any of their banked gil on a small plot).

Hmm, if everyone is just standing around then it would get a bit crowded. As for seating, in the case of my FC's house eight to ten people can sit in the hot tub*, eight at the tables and three on the couch. That still leaves room for three to five people to stand around with some personal space.

* Hot tub seating is a little funky. You don't always end up sitting where you are standing. If it gets crowded it may take a few tries to avoid sitting on someone's lap.

Even kinkier is two people /dozing on the same bed at the same time.

I thought you owned it and could sell it later. I mean wasn't that the reason they didn't want the big FC to buy up all the land..

Can you only sell it to other FCs? Or can you simply relinquish the land and have the game "buy back" the land? 2.1 patch notes don't seem to indicate any way to sell the plot to other FCs. It does say that a FC can relinquish the plot back to the system, but that no gil will be refunded, so it doesn't sound like there will be a way to get gil back by selling the plot back to the system.

Even if you could sell the small plot to another FC that was interested in that particular location, I don't imagine you would be able to get that much of your initial investment back. Given the large number of small plots available, another FC isn't likely to need to buy an occupied small plot because there are no free ones available. And if there are unoccupied plots available, they will be selling for a much lower price than you would have paid for the small plot you are trying to sell simply because of property devaluation. To get someone to buy your occupied small plot over an available one, you would have to offer a further discount.

Q: If you buy a small house and piece of land, when it starts to get too cramped will it be possible to upgrade to a larger house?
A: We're working on a system for moving that will be introduced in a patch. Also, depending on lag and stress on the servers, we may allow players to own a second house. But yes, you can be sure that when we're finished, you'll be able to upgrade to a bigger house.

Q: Will it be possible to sell land deeds in the market ward or other places?
A: Yes, it will be possible. They can also be traded. Just as an example, you could give a house to that special someone in your free company as a present.

Why else would they have been worried that the wealthiest players would buy up the land if they couldn't buy it up and sell it even higher.. That was their reasoning for such high prices.. If they were lower the richest buy the land and sell it later.. They wanted housing to work like a regular economy..
