Noob Question about End-Game Gear.Follow

#1 Dec 27 2013 at 2:00 PM Rating: Excellent
Ok, so I have had little interest in end game gear/ content until lately. I now have a level 50 PLD and WHM, and all I know about is "relic." But I keep seeing Relic +1, and Zenith? What is Zenith exactly? and Myth? I see Valor and Cleric gear? Darklight? Can someone explain them or at least let me know which is the best?

Zenith is the new name for Relic +1. Relics are iLvl 80 and the Zenith are iLvl90. Relics are obtained by doing a quest that requires several steps including the hard mode primals. Here is a link to the walkthrough http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/71222-A-Relic-Reborn-Walkthrough

Myth are Tomestones. There are currently 2 types of Tomestones. http://xivdb.com/?item/23/Allagan-Tomestone-of-Philosophy &
http://xivdb.com/?item/24/Allagan-Tomestone-of-Mythology.

You get Tomestones from doing content. Everything from Treasure Map hunting to defeating Primals gets you these Tomestones. There is a weekly cap of 450 for ToM.

Both currencies are traded to http://xivdb.com/?npc/1008119/Auriana at Revenant's Toll for items and equipment. Click her name to see the list of what she sells.

You probably already have some ToP, perhaps enough to buy your first Darklight pieces (iLvl 70).

Generally speaking people generally go from the job specific equpment like http://xivdb.com/?item/3220/Gallant-Surcoat to some iLvl 60 dungeon drops like http://xivdb.com/?item/6281/Hoplite-Tabard then once they have the ToP http://xivdb.com/?item/3250/Heavy-Darklight-Armor Now in 2.1 you can go to Crystal Tower and farm for the iLvl 80 items like http://xivdb.com/?item/3271/Armor-of-Light

For iLvl 90 you can either farm Coil for http://xivdb.com/?item/3266/Heavy-Allagan-Armor or spend your ToM on http://xivdb.com/?item/6050/Valor-Surcoat

I'm just linking the body pieces but here is the gear progression for whm.

http://xivdb.com/?item/3225/Healer's-Robe -> http://xivdb.com/?item/3196/Strategos-Bliaud -> http://xivdb.com/?item/3255/Darklight-Cowl-of-Healing -> http://xivdb.com/?item/3270/Royal-Vest -> http://xivdb.com/?item/6075/Cleric's-Robe & http://xivdb.com/?item/3265/Allagan-Tunic-of-Healing

It seems to go Quested -> Dungeon Drop -> ToP purchase -> Crystal Tower -> ToM & Coil

There are some crafted items that fit in between too and make good options when you go from a 1 piece head and body to 2 piece.

For weapons I think you can go with a GC Lieutenant (iLvl 55) http://xivdb.com/?item/1667/Serpent-Lieutenant's-Longsword
I know I see the http://xivdb.com/?item/6270/Darklight-Macuahuitl drop in Wanderers Palace all the time

Weapons in ascending order come from Hardmode Ifrit -> Garuda -> Titan -> Mog For Paladin it is a shield from Titan Hardmode http://xivdb.com/?item/2305/The-Wall-of-Crags

Then comes the Relic http://xivdb.com/?item/1675/Curtana which can be upgraded with items purchaced with ToM to http://xivdb.com/?item/6257/Curtana-Zenith There are shields to go with the relic and the zenith.

After that you can get http://xivdb.com/?item/1679/Break-Blade & http://xivdb.com/?item/1678/Allagan-Blade

For shields there are then http://xivdb.com/?item/2311/Onion-Shield from Extreme Primals and http://xivdb.com/?item/2308/Allagan-Round-Shield from Coil

Additionally in 2.1 there are now items from defeating the extreme primals including accessories and weapons.

All valid questions.

Everything I'm about to say assumes you've finished the storyline, and have access to the hard mode primals (quest acquired via the Waking Sands, Urianger I think).

Darklight gear is item level 70 armor and accessories that are purchased via Philosophy tomes, which are dropped starting in the Stone Vigil. You should have over 300 or so by the time you finish all the dungeons leading up to the end of the game (including Castrum Meridianum and Praetorium).

Valor/Cleric gear is part of the class of gear commonly referred to as "AF2" because it looks like the AF (artifact) armor you get during your class quests, only it is much stronger (being item level 90). You purchase this gear by using Mythology tomes, which are similar to Philosophy tomes, but harder to come by. All end game level 50 dungeons drop them with the exception of CM and Praetorium. That means Wanderer's Palace, Amdapor Keep, Pharos Sirius, Hard Mode Haukke Manor and Copperbell Mines, and Crystal Tower: Labyrinth of the Ancients.

Relic weapons (and relic+1/Zenith) are unique job-only weapons that are acquired via a quest that starts in Revenant's Toll, from Rowena I believe. You can only be on one quest line at a time, and to finish your relic weapon you need 900 Phil tomes. To get your Zenith (which is the new name for Relic+1) you need 900 Myth tomes. The quest's themselves are pretty explanatory, so once you get it you should be good to go.

Typically, the way people acquire gear is by farming for Mythology tomes and amassing Phil tomes along the way. They then purchase Darklight armor with the Phil tomes, filling in other spots with gear dropped from the high level dungeons. As time goes by and you accumulate more Myth tomes, you can upgrade your gear further as you see fit.

Hope this helps. It's all a bit overwhelming at first, but you'll get the hang of it in no time.

This is a great thread, because I was confused about this as well. I'm currently a 44 PLD and I am hoping that I can knock out the rest of the level grind this weekend. I don't think I'm anywhere near ready for endgame because I know I don't have the cross-class skills necessary for raiding, but it's at least nice to know what I am looking at for starting to gear up.

Luckily 4/5 of your major skills are all Marauder-based. Fracture, Bloodbath, Foresight and Mercy Stroke, with MS coming latest at level 26. The only real end-game viable Conjurer cross class skill is Stoneskin, and that's level 34. And it's great to have, but most PLD's I know run the four skills from MRD plus Stoneskin.

Ideally you would want to get Stoneskin eventually though. It's an extra 10% life on a target, and PLD MP isn't used for anything else but Flash. It gives PLD a lot more utility as an OT, because they can help out by tossing SS on the MT before a big hit comes, giving the healers more time to take care of something else.

Just want to add that Holy Shield Zenith which comes from the Curtana quest would also be i90, and can be upgraded from the NQ Holy Shield with only 300 Tomes of Myth.
