I haven't had an NVidia graphics card since 2002, I've always gone with Radeon, but change, they say, is as good as a rest and I have an NVidia 3D Vision ready monitor so I think I'll make the switch.
I don't really know much about them though. I can get and EVGA GTX 770 SC ACX 4GB w/ steam codes for AC4, Splinter Cell: BL and AO for CHF449 (which is approximately the same in USD), or go for the 2GB card for CHF399. Alternatively I can wait another month and go for the 780 3GB @ CHF620.
These are Swiss prices, so, for comparison I could get a Sapphire HD 7970 Vapor-X 3GB for CHF434. Is the EVGA value for money, should I wait, I don't know if there is a new gen to be announced soon and if prices may fall in the New Year?

I'm not up to date with current Nvidia offerings but I can vouch for EVGA quality, they're all I've bought for motherboards and cards for several builds now.
I prefer nvidia personally because Nvidia cards have better stability but less raw performance. A friend of mine has been using ATI cards for a while. Typically ATI has better Performance for Money but the drivers often have issues in games. My friend currently randomly crashed to desktop on teleports in FFXIV. He's had all sorts of other issues as well.
I use the GTX 770 right now and it's a pretty good card. It's sort of overkill for everything out there. I wouldn't worry about RAM on a GPU unless you want better performance on games for multiple monitors. If you're running FFXIV stretched across multiple monitors (2+). Here is a general list of performance of cards out there. It seems fairly accurate. It is however in USD.

I don't recommend anyone else but EVGA. They have good products, their RMA is awesome and they allow you to upgrade your GPU if you decide you want something better within a few months for only the cost of shipping and the difference in price. Slightly more expensive, but well worth the price.

Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, and EVGA are all solid brands. Any bad cards you get from them would simply be bad luck rather than because they are bad brands.

I just bought a GTX 660 at a modest sale to replace my ailing GTX 285. Benchmark-wise, it's about a 3.5x improvement even if the card itself isn't top-end relative to more recent releases. The brand itself is Zotac, and while I've heard some hit-and-miss stuff, I'm more inclined to give Newegg the benefit of the doubt in not shilling total garbage. At the very least I snagged a 3 year warranty just in case.
But in my surfing, Threx's assessment seems to mirror a lot of other opinion, but I'm always skeptical about fanboyism or deliberate press sabotage when it comes to the hardware game. Ultimately, I think it's important to consider how long you want this card to last alongside how much you'd be willing to spend. My old card went about 5 years. $150 for 3 on this guaranteed feels fair enough for me. So far I've noticed both performance improvements and lack of some old crashes my prior had, but I need to give this more time before determining whether or not I have some other PC components failing. But I'm also mindful my mobo is the new bottleneck for me.

Generally with GPU's, I just buy the cheapest one available. All these companies have pretty good RMA policies, and the one company that gave bad service to one person, may have given exceptional service to several others. Generally you'll see the same names over and over, PNY, Zotac, EVGA, MSI, Gigabyte. I've probably had one of each over the years and never had issues dealing with one over the other.
People's biggest concern is the fans and if they do a half decent job of cooling. To some it's worth that extra 20-30$ for the dual fans, guess it depends on what case and the cooling that's going on in your system. All that being said, I've seen cheap dual fans on GPU's that did worse then a single fan GPU, so you never know what you're getting.

To get the best performance out of FFXIV, simply ask a past self to scan your computer with his sonic screwdriver and then install the compiled drivers from your sonic screwdriver. Simple as pie. Well, not really. But if it helps.
