[Answered] Minimum Specs QuestionFollow

#1 Nov 24 2013 at 11:20 PM Rating: Excellent
EDIT: In my last post I listed the laptop and specs I went with. On max settings it pulled a solid 15-20FPS, but to max it out I turned off HDR. Once that was off it was buttery smooth.

According to this page the minimum system requirements for XIV are:

Quote:
Operating System: Windows® Vista 32/64bit, Windows® 7 32/64 bit
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo
Graphics: NVIDIA® Geforce® 8800 Series, ATI Radeon™ HD 4770
Memory: 2GB (4GB recommended for 64bit OS)
Disk Space: 20GB.

Legitimate question: I just picked up this laptop for work related purposes and the only point of contention I see is the processor. While a minimum processor speed isn't quoted for requirements, it is running at 1GHz. The resolution is good, the memory is good, graphics (while being the literally lowest end 8k series chip) is a higher number than the 4770, so hopefully that'll mean something. Higher series, wrong class... if you know what I mean.

Anyway, my question is, is anyone running the game with similar or bare minimum specs? I can't imagine the game performs... really at all, but I'm not looking to FATE or run dungeons. I'd be happy just fishing, or crafting while I'm sitting at my desk at work with some downtime.

Any thoughts, experiences, or advice besides buy a better laptop? Thanks in advance everyone :D

The lowest clock core 2 duo is around twice what you quoted. You might be able to get by just fishing, but doing anything else with other PC around will probably be nearly impossible.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

That Radeon 8180 is roughly 5 times less powerfull than the minimum spec 4770

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+4770&id=601

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+8180&id=2668

"The AMD Radeon HD 8180 is an integrated DirectX 11.1 graphics card in some of the AMD Temash APUs (A4-1200). It offers 128 shader cores based on the GCN architecture (two Compute Units) and clocks at 225 MHz (no turbo). The graphics card does not have its own memory, but accesses the main memory of the system (up to single-channel DDR3L-1066).

The HD 8180 integrates an UVD 4.2 video decoder as well as a VCE 2.0 video encoder. It supports up to two external monitors via VGA, DVI, HDMI 1.4a and DisplayPort 1.2.

Depending on the benchmark, the performance of the Radeon HD 8180 is somewhat below the Intel HD Graphics (Ivy Bridge). This is similar to the old Radeon HD 7310, but usually to slow for modern games. Only a few older and less demanding games might run fluently."

With no onboard video ram I'm not sure it will even run FFXIV.

I'll have to try the benchmark for giggles when I get home and am on my home connection. As it stands it scores Even Match for the XI benchmark (~2400) on low resolution. I'm running the high resolution benchmark now for the fun of it. Chances are it won't launch XIV and if it does it'll chug it. Oh well. That just means I have a reason to resub XI again while I'm at work ;)

For what it's worth, Minecraft runs decently on all low settings after the chunks load. Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 runs well. I bought this knowing it wasn't a gaming rig and I accept the fact that it's not going to run XIV, though the thought was nice.

EDIT: Scored ~1400 on High Res mode. That's still mildly okay.

Now if only the benchmark meant anything. My underspec PC scores mode than decently (forgot the exact number) but the game is actually completely unplayable.

I've been playing the game on a 9600 GSO (That can't even run the benchmark) since my faithful 3+ year old 460 died last week and only runs in safe mode. I'm going to love the 760 when I get around to ordering it. It's fun to log on and see the game play with an old 10 dollar speaker for sound and a delay on button pressing but since I'm just crafting for 1.0 achievements it's better than not playing. After I gave up on trying to get the 460 to work and cleaned all the Google search fixes off my computer, on a whim before shutting down I clicked run on FF14 and laughed when the game ran semi ok. That's all I'm really looking to do, sit and craft, or fish, or whatever. Nothing intensive. I'm not going to be doing Crystal Tower runs on it or anything, teehee :P I didn't end up installing the benchmark today like I had hoped. Got caught up running dungeons on my desktop. Hopefully tomorrow morning, though!

For what it's worth, it's running XI just fine :)

I ended up taking that laptop back (wasn't really... 'great') and ended up springing for this guy right here. I'm cleaning all the OEM stuff off of it now and prepping it for the benchmarks. My weekend starts after this shift (I work night shift, if you can't tell from my post times) and I'm looking forward to tinkering with it.

It comes equipped with a 4th Gen i7, 8GB of RAM and a GeForce GT 720M with 2GB of dedicated memory. I'm hoping (strongly) that that'll make XIV playable. I know XI will be playable.

EDIT: So the benchmark scores are in. With FFXI Benchmark 3 this laptop scored ~10,700 on low resolution, ~8,000 on high resolution. With the FFXIV benchmark it scored ~3700, marking it at excellent performance. I'll install the both now and let you guys know how it goes :D
