I used WS_FTP because I was used to it, it was easy to set up and configure, and I didn't need anything really fancier until I started programming stuff and needed to SSH into terminals remotely. And it was free and good.
I still use Paint Shop Pro 7 for most of my graphics work. I paid $100 for it almost fifteen years ago, dammit. I see no reason to stop using it.
