Frustration should be the obstacle of advancement. Whether it's a grind or simply small attention span. We're dumbing down what a "casual" is in a mmo if thats what we're aiming for. MMO is a particular commitment. There are plenty of games to make "casuals" forget their day to day. MMO is a particular commitment. The sooner we realize any given mmo will never be Halo the better off the industry is. MMO is a segregated group. Chuck and Osbourne commercials may make us believe it's a big world but reality is once the dust settles here we all are. MMO won't be Zelda. Ever. Sell to the real mmo casual. Not the gamer casual.
Don't you think skill should be the obstacle of advancement? It's fine to be frustrated with yourself. The problem is what you attribute that frustration to. When I said that people would get frustrated, I meant with the game, and rightfully so. The game was the thing causing the frustration. Hell, I can think of certain fights in other games that I've attempted 50-200 times, losing every single goddamn time until I finally won. Did I get frustrated at times? Hell yes. But I was frustrated with myself mainly. FFXI had my constantly frustrated with the game, because the game didn't reward skill. It rewarded an incredibly high tolerance for repetition. It reaches a point where you realize that you can get the same experience on a factory line and they'll actually pay YOU to do it.
