,100,000 character profiles over, past and present. (I'm guessing that's any character that survived past the initial 30 day trial of 1.0 - if 600,000 boxes were sold, and 500,000 people never actually went past the free trial - yeah, that sounds about right.) The servers dedicated to database deconversion are running 24/7 and it'll take them about a month, because each character is hundreds of tables with thousands of data points. Then, once the data is transferred over, they will reload that database onto the old server so people can play again (for a while, anyway) without permanent saves.
That 600,000 figure was the number shipped, not the number sold. Sometimes you have to pay attention to the words near numbers. Sony is a bit sneaky with that, reporting PS3s, Vitas
shipped but not sold sometimes. That number came from somewhere around Fall 2010 and before they yanked the ability to see how many people were in game, the total number of players at peak was pegged at something like 45k or 47k around mid-late Oct 2010. When they pulled the reporting ~Dec 2010, it was somewhere in the 20ks. With numbers like that, it would take
a lot of people trying it in the free period to go through somewhere in the neighborhood of 550,000 unsold copies (might be more. I think the number might have been 660,000 shipped).

Somewhere out there, there is a road with 2 signs on it. One says "No Trespassing". The sign right next to it says "FREE KITTENS".
