Why is an article I just read reffering to it as Hydaelyn?

Well... it is actually called Eorzea or that is how it is pronounced but I might have spelled it wrong... Not Eroza teehee :P. But maybe the new world has different name? Eorzea was after all destroyed.

Hydaelyn is the name of the whole world/planet, while Eorzea is just the region of it we play(ed) in.

Quote:
Comprised of Aldenard, the westernmost of the Three Great Continents, and its surrounding islands, the realm of Eorzea has been the cradle of several unique civilizations throughout history. Towering mountains dominate the north, their peaks forever lashed with icy winds; to the south, a bleak expanse of unforgiving desert holds sway. Yet these inhospitable lands hold irresistible lure for man and monster alike, for wide and deep flow the currents of aether, and rich are the veins of power-infused crystal. In this harsh though vibrant region, the people of Eorzea have carved out their histories—a cycle of prosperous Astral and disastrous Umbral eras.

The First Umbral Era brought an end to the age of the gods, and there have been six such eras of calamity since the First Astral Era ushered in the age of man. Each of the umbral catastrophes has, in turn, borne the characteristics of one of the six elements. With all the elements now represented, it was believed the current Astral Era would last into eternity. But in the seventh verse of the Divine Chronicles, Mezaya Thousand Eyes prophesized a less fortunate fate. The "senary sun," or Sixth Astral Era, would indeed end, and the "septenary moon," or Seventh Umbral Era, would cast its shadow upon the land.

Now the land stands poised to enter another age of decline, a period known as the Seventh Umbral Era. On the eastern border, the Garlean Empire masses its troops for invasion, while the native beastmen tribes summon their deities, the otherworldly primals. The threats facing Eorzea will not easily be overcome.

XIV is a rotting husk compared to XI in terms of lore and story so it's not surprising. We had quests and dialogs that constantly alluded to other lands and areas we eventually got to visit. In XIV..well, there's some hints but it seems phoned n in comparison.

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

To be fair XIV is in the Rise of Zilart era, comparatively to XI, and I don't know if people remember what XI was like way back when but I remember playing for 3 months and only getting BLM to 24ish and WHM/RDM to like 15. It was a punishing game, and frankly, I didn't get much lore out of it in that time, though I had some wicked fun exp parties, ha ha.

Anyway, I didn't finish as much storyline as there was available in vanilla XIV, and there was a good lot of lore in what I saw, more than XI had the beginning for a dunes-rat if my memory serves me correctly.

My complaint with XIV is the same that applied to the rest of the game. Things like guardian days were a really neat idea - but the game should have never launched without -at least- some concept of how they would matter in the game. The lore was spoiled by no follow up. It's like they took an idea from Elder Scrolls and half-implemented it.

Anyway, I guess what I am saying is lack of implementation and follow through spoiled a lot of the delicious lore that was in the original game. I hope they don't make the same mistake with ARR.

i miss the days when no one used the word "lore". it was just, the story of the game. now its like a tangible, quantifiable amount. how much lore does your game have? mine has more!

/sigh
/moves aside for progress
/goes back to Dark Souls.

Don't get hung up on the word. Maybe it was called backstory then, but it was the same concept.

Things like

What is going on around me?
Why am I here?
Who is that bad guy and why is he all pissed off?
That princess is hot, is she single?
Why does my main character have such an attitude problem?
What is the significance of this dungeon in relation to my current task?
How do you prove you exist? Maybe we don't exist....

have always been important. If it wasn't, we'd all be playing something other than an RPG. So yes, a lack of "lore" will always be out of place in a game that defines itself as an RPG whether online or otherwise. I agree it's probably not terribly productive to compare XIV to XI in terms of... anything. But don't dismiss the importance of having rich ongoing lore in an RPG that has a monthly sub.
