Yes this is another blog post and I apologize if I offend anyone with me putting it in here. Here are a few of my thoughts on the subject.
"....The UI was cumbersome, the retainer system was a failure, the system requirements were way too steep for what you got, the control scheme worked okay with a controller but pretty poorly with a keyboard and mouse, and the world had none of the appeal that made Final Fantasy XI such a popular and long lasting entry in the MMO world....."

I think the post was well written overall, but you focused too much(in my opinion) on the contrast between XIV and XI. Many of the faults with XIV are also present in XI which you seem to want to transition back to. I understand that you may not have experience with other MMOs, but for the sake of comparison it probably would have been better to stand XIV up to more recent MMOs and what they did right or wrong in these areas.

Good point. We definitely complained about the same mobs reused in FFXI but it was nowhere near as obvious as in FFXIV. I used XI for comparison purposes because I feel that many of the people who were the most excited about XIV were former XI (or at least former Final Fantasy) players. And I think alot of us had hoped for that uniqueness that XI had with some modernizations.

The same crabs are shown in Valkurm, Gustaberg, Buburimu, Qufim Island, Rolanberry Fields, Boyahda Tree, Jugner Forest, Carpenters' Landing
The same crawlers are used throughout Sarutabaruta, Aht Urhgan, and ZiTah
I can go on and on. XIV probably has more unique mobs in places, but both XI and XIV have reused things all over the place.

This is true, again, but in your post you also help proved my point. You named at least 8 different and vastly distinct areas from XI. A feature that was all but absent from XIV. Reuse monsters, okay. Reuse monsters and terrain, that's a big no no. I wouldn't quite call it nostalgic, at least no more than people who still compare every FF to FFVII. FFXI was their first entry into the MMO market and it was amazing. The reason I rely so heavily on it for comparison is to illustrate that XIV is a big step BACKWARDS...and that's not the direction games are supposed to go.

I think the reason 1.0 lost our trust was that it wasn't fun.
What I really liked with 1.0 however was that you could pick other jobs than the regular battle classes like warrior, white mage, thief, monk etc. Now I could adventure as a carpenter, miner, fisher, goldsmith and so on. It was so refreshening to play crafting and gathering classes that didn't feel like they were tagged on as an afterthought. They were considered as much main class like the battle classes and content were promised for them so it was interesting to play the game in a pacifist way. You could reach the level cap without killing anything and there's not that many MMORPGs that allow you to do such a thing. Why aren't there crafting or gathering instances? I think creating Eorzea's biggest cake would be an epic raid instance if done right. I think that would be a breath of fresh air from the battle mechanics every MMORPG seem to use.
I hope there'll be more content like Hamlet as that was a promising start of something. With 2.0 they'll be changing their main focus to battle classes so I feel some of the uniqueness with the game is gone as well.

I think it not being fun was the overreaching idea in the blog. "Fun" for me takes alot into consideration. And 1.0 struckout.

It basically lost our trust, because it was in development for 5 years and Plus! And when it was released it felt like a group of monkeys developed the game, a month before Release. All XIV had and has going for it up until now(Subjected to change with 2.0) is Graphics.
But Graphics don't make an MMO, and i am glad for that, because look what happened to RPG Genre... To much focus on pretty graphics and little focus on actual innovative gameplay and good story writing <.<

Why FFXIV 1.0 lost my trust? It all stems back to when 1.0 launched. I will admit that I didn't follow the alpha or beta development and just assumed that a new Final Fantasy MMO would be awesome! I enjoyed such good times in 11, I should enjoy even more good times in 14! After playing a month or so I realized that 14 wasn't what I expected. Then I hear about his 'golden patch' that will fix everything. I log in after the patch goes live and find!.... nothing changed. Then I'm told that the December patch will change everything, it's the patch that'll change the game! I login in January and... nothing. The only patch that I absolutely enjoyed was the first one to introduce auto-attack and I would have liked them to leave it at that. I came back during the "Welcome Back" campaign and I hated the battle system so much that I quit after 30 minutes of trying to fight something. The levequests were my level but my PUG seemed so powerless against a couple of bugs that it made me lose all respect for my character. The very character I had been working with since release.
Don't focus on my failure as being a mid-30s PUG. What I want to portrait is that since release I've been told, "this patch will make everything better, you'll see!". After a certain point you get jaded and stop buying into the BS. I just cannot look at 2.0 and see sparkles and rainbows thinking, "this will be the pinnacle of MMO development".
