Square Enix has been taking a lot of heat lately (perhaps some justified, and some not) so I thought I might create a post where we talk about our favorite SE title, what that title did really well, and how those strengths could be incorporated into FFXIV.
Personally, my first SE game, and still my favorite to date was Final Fantasy 7. I'd like to see some of the same writing styles used in that game for FFXIV, especially in regards to pacing and character development.

I have 2 all time favorites. Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 11. They were both my escape from reality for a very long time.

Never had a chance to play 11, I heard it was an excellent MMO. I suppose I'm a bit surprised that they didn't do better with the first release of FFXIV, given that they have 11 to use as a reference.

I think I am an anomaly because I truly enjoyed 8 and 10... 11 was great as a played it for 6 years but 8 and 10 got me into the genre. Who wouldnt like gunblades?
Final Fantasy VI (3 as it was initially released in the US) was the first to truly captivate me.
FFXIV is adapting quite a few elements from that game into this one, so I'm quite happy with the artistic direction.

I can't speak much for 10 (kinda rushed through it), but I'd definitely agree with you on FF8. It took me a couple of times playing through the first couple hours of the game, but eventually it stuck with me and now it's also one of my favorites :)
The mechanics for the gunblade were a lot of fun IMO. I liked the idea of pressing R1 (think that was the right button) at just the right time to do extra damage.
FFVI was definitely the one that got me the most... I played that game through at least 20 times, although I also liked IV... it had a few of the best characters IMO (Kain and Rydia). I'll be honest though, I was a diehard Nintendo fanboy back in the day, and when FFVII was released on playstation I boycotted it...
It wasn't until FFXI was announced that I finally broke down and bought a PS2.... and decided to buy the FF library for PS1&PS2. I liked 7, but wasn't as blown away by it as others were... I hated 8 (not really sure why to be honest, but just couldn't get into it).... then I played ...9 and played it again... and again... not sure why I liked it so much... maybe it was the story, maybe it was the humor, it just clicked with me and I truely enjoyed it.
I never finished 10 (I found it far too cinematic for my taste... and thus never played 10-2), played 11 for more years that I care to admit (Beta through to the end of last year) and dabled a bit in XII and XIII (I really like XII, but never had the time to really sit down and enjoy it... XIII made me angry after about 8 hours of straight line style play). I recently bought XIII-2 just because it was somehting like $10 lol, but haven't loaded it up yet, as I want to finish XIII first to see how it ends.
tl:dr
Loved FFVI and FFIX, played the snot out of FFXI and currently enjoying FFXIV and hoping for good things with v2.0

I did like the free roam feature in ff3. It allowed me to find Mimic which was really cool. I thought I was hot sh*t at 10 years old back in 95.

Open world exploration/free roam seems to be something SE did away with starting at FF10. I used to love playing 7-9 because of the world map that you could run around on.
Why they got rid of this and went with a more linear approach I do not understand. Then of course Bethesda came along with games like Fallout and the newer Elder Scrolls games. Those worlds are massive! I read an article recently that touched on how SE may be trying more of an "Elder Scrolls" approach to their world for FF15. I'd personally love to see FF lore in a massive world like Tamrial!

Production limitations. You were talking about a world designed completely in 3D at that point, not just characters over pre-rendered at screens.
Somewhere down the line SE prioritized graphical quality over open world experience, and it went south from there. They'd make corridors rather than exploration areas so they could make those corridors look as stunning as possible.
I mean, instead of running through, just take a look at some of the stunning vistas in FFXIII. They are gorgeous - but we want to be able to explore those areas, not just see them.

totally agree! seeing all of those landscapes (as gorgeous as they look), only makes me want to explore them MORE :)

It's an honor to have such a true SE fan here. I've never played those games, but I'm sure they're excellent as your post suggests :)

haven't played SE games till a friend sent me a Chrono Trigger rom, since then I loved the game and SE for making it, tho that is the only rpg I played till get 8-9 endings. Liked others FF titles but never had the time or patience to finish them but my friends told me all about them and found the stories very well done. Years later I heard about FFXI and bought it, played it for 9 years. FFXI and Chrono Trigger are and always be my most dear games. My perfect dream is a Chronno Trigger - MMORPG game, even now I see meteor in ffxiv's sky and only think... Lavos ^^
What I would like to see in FFXIV is "special attacks combined from 2-3 players", liked it in Chrono Trigger, and I think that will bring more strategy to parties in FFXIV, don't like how actual mmorpgs are just about how you zerg multiple mobs and "maybe" why I liked FFXI alot (still remember my 1st skillchain in dunes), but maybe I am asking too much since alot ppl just want fast kills nowdays.

Ironically Tanaka produced 4 out of 6 games on that list!

Tanaka is a great producer, his record speaks for itself really, his only bad game has been XIV, and i am sure it was not all his doing.
Tanaka was excellent about making single player games. Multiplayer... well, that's where he earned his infamy. FFXI's policies can count against him just as much as FFXIV's production did.
Is it all his fault? Most certainly not, but when you take producer role, you also take responsibility.
I really do hope he gets to produce some more good single player games.

FFX was my first one and my favorite for the longest time but I think I defenitely enjoyed FFXII more.

FF7 was one of those few games I spent hours and hours (days/weeks/months/years) playing. I would purposely explore everything and my longest game went up to over 100 hours, I wanted everything and everything maxed. Was also one of those few games I completed several times (lost count). If I had a top list of game hours spent XI would be number 1st played since EU release and 2nd FF7.
For a single player game to have that kind of hours with many gamers, you know its something special.
MMOs are the norm. Still they have got some things amazingly right over the years but I would say most of the flack they got was justified especially with XIV release and their single player games.

I agree to a degree with you, but in my opinion his policies are what made XI.... XI. Had he been less hardcore with content and grind, FFXI would be totally different than what it was, tho he should have been more flexible once he saw WOW lift off and leave XI in the dust, tho not to an extreme extent, but you know, make it more accessible perhaps in the lower levels.
While I love every FF game I ever played, more notably 6,7,8, and 9.. I think Crono Trigger actually takes the spot of my favorite console game of all time. It just squeaks past the others for me. I don't think 9 got enough credit. That game was incredible and so was the soundtrack. The mana games and xeno were pretty amazing too.
Apart from SE, anyone remember Legend of Gaia and Harvest Moon? Excellent games of that time.

You can still make an accessible game that is fast paced and fun, while including harder top tier content. WoW's heroic raids for example are usually only completed by 1% of the player base while they're current (pre nerf cycle). Casual players will never be able to get past even the first 3 bosses of raids of that difficulty. Same with top ranking PvP matches vs the normal battlegrounds that most folks run. Tanaka made some difficult endgame but it was more about patience and sacrificing your players over and over again and less about strategy and mechanics.

I just got to this thread and I'm glad to see someone showing love for Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross. US FF3 was my first FF, back when I was in the 3rd grade. Played 7, 8, 10, 10-2, 12, 13, 13-2. Gave each one of those at least 2 play throughs, and put about 5 years into 11. Chrono Cross though... That is the one I have gone back to countless times. My favorite part has always been the Marbule side quest with the guitar music. Serge+Glenn X-Attack with Masamune and dual Einlanzers. Mmmmmmmmm.
Our team is like a flock of woodpeckers in a petrified forest. We just need to keep working and keep an eye open for opportunity.

Super Mario RPG legend of the seven stars was the first RPG I ever owned. Still one of the most clever RPGs I have ever played. Geno and Mallow are 2 of the most memorable characters I can remember in any Squaresoft game. And the addition of timed hits really increased the entertainment of the turn based fighting style.

I hated FF, was more into Zelda at the time. The thought of picking my attack and watching was weird. I lent a friend MGS1 and and lent me FFVII. LOL!! I played alllll weekend and then got a copy on Monday. The rest is history... My favorite FF title is Tactics. Must have played that game over 40 times at least. I like chrono cross, for some reason I just couldn't get into trigger. It isn't a bad game. "It just isn't for me." lol.

Funny, that's actually my comment to every time people have problems with a fight and decide to switch one or more Job out for either a war or blm... Everyone in 14 seems to think that all problems can be solved with more Wars or more Blms (Ah... Cowbells:).
